View Full Version : Moulin Rouge
How many are going to pre-order this? I've just noticed that EzyDVD are offering an exclusive, free making of disc with all their pre-orders making it effectively a three disc set for £14 ish. Looks like a winner to me, I would expect the Oz set to be the definitive one anyway.....

really? i think it depends on personal preference. if you're on the side of the fence that is (a) convinced of the discernible superiority of a PAL picture, (b) not bothered by 'PAL speedup', and (c) not bothered often having to wait a few extra months .... then it's clearly the one to go for because of the price.
however, if like myself you prefer the film to run at the correct speed, find NTSC images to be indistiguisable from PAL, have a setup that eliminates any 'jerkiness' in panning shots, and find the over-large aussie ratings labels irritating .... then it's region 1 all the way!! :)
in answer to the initial question though, i will definitely be pre-ordering this excellent film on region 1 from Ringos (http://www.ringos.co.uk/).
Hmmmm, thank you Dr Techy :D I just meant that as dear old Baz is an aussie, you would expect him to ensure his homeland gets all the extas it should have!

What do you base this assumption on? Like Ben Martin says it depends on the individual. I have also heard that the R2 and 4 don't have the DTS track. Does anybody know anything more if the R1 has a DTS track for definite? If this is right then the R1 might be the definitive one.
IMO R4 are good for getting non snapper case dvd's and maybe exclusives like The Mummy Returns or the Final Fantasy hologram case but they are by no means always the definitive versions. I wonder if you have said this because Baz Luhrmann is Australian.

"tetchy"
adjective
easily made angry, unhappy or upset
.... and it's pretty clear i was none of the above! :)
"tetchy" .... no,
"pedantic" .... yes! :D
Hehehehe....or T E C H Y as in colloquial for someone who has a predilection for going into a lot of technical detail!!! :D
Gotta love these forums eh? I was only trying to show people that a 3 disc version of Moulin Rouge might be preferable to a 2 disc one!

i see the connection, but i very much doubt that luhrmann has enough sway over fox to ensure that aussies get a superior disc purely because they're his countrymen!
i wasn't aware that the region 1 was going to have a DTS track .... sweet news if true though! (says the man with no surround system!) where did that info come from? for the moment though, i'm more concerned by the number of websites reporting a 1.85:1 picture ratio. surely incorrect?!

Yeh, I agree....it's just that I read something somewhere about how much of an interest he was taking in getting this DVD as good as possible....so that's why I thought he would wanna decent R4 one too!

:D LOL! indeed - gotta love these forums! what a fabulous misunderstanding that was!

understood originally. and i wasn't trying to suggest that for some the R4 would be the preference - i know there are a lot of R4 'fans' on this forum. i use them too, in the same way Alanok mentioned - to replace snappers.

i'm sure all the versions will be equally good (with the possible exception of the DTS track, though this seems unconfirmed), so it'll be down to personal preference.

I'm still waiting to see how the aspect ratio issue pans out. If the R1 version has the correct 2.35:1 ratio then I'll get it because of the DTS audio. Moulin Rouge in DTS will be quite an experience. It's definitely one of the best DVDs out in December and I'd probably rate it as the best mainstream film since the spring time.
Go with you there Tristan - film of the year so far in my opinion - though its been a damn poor year so far

From thedigitabits.com October 2:
"Next up is Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge: Special Edition, which streets on December 18th (SRP $29.98). This 2-disc set will include the film in anamorphic widescreen video, with Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio. Extras will include two audio commentary tracks featuring Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Don McAlpine and Craig Pierce, extensive branching footage, an audio track for the visually impaired, an exclusive "Behind the Red Velvet Curtain" version featuring a little green fairy that leads the viewer behind-the-scenes into the making of the film, multiple featurettes on the production process from conception to release - The Writers Gallery, Creating the Intro to the Film, The Actor's Gallery (featuring Kidman, McGregor, Leguizamo, Richard Roxborough and Jim Broadbent discussing their characters), Dance Gallery (uncut choreography sequences), Editorial Gallery (extended scenes), Music Gallery (the scoring of the film and an interview with Fat Boy Slim), and Animating The Green Fairy - more than 10 Easter Eggs, the HBO First Look special, multiple extended scenes, several key choreography-laden scenes featuring multi-angle options, the Come What May and Lady Marmalade music videos, MTV Movie Awards live performance of Lady Marmalade, 2 theatrical trailers and a still gallery (featuring artwork by Ellen Von Unwerth, Mary Ellen Mark, Douglas Kirkland, Sue Adler and Merrick Morton)."
Not bad...if any film ought to have a DTS soundtrack, this one does surely?
---
So many films, so little time...
Does anyone know if the R4 version has the 2 audio commentary tracks, they aren't listed in the details on EzyDVD, DVDCrave or Family Boxoffice.

As I much prefer PAL anyway the Aussie 3 disc-er sounds like a pretty sweet deal, that is until you remember that its a musical and each song will be ever so-slowly speeded up.
Think I'll wait and see how it pans out before commiting to a region.
