I see that warner have this on release now and looking at the cover it looks a very disappointing release of a classic cult road movie. No extras, no anamorphic transfer (though it is 2:35:1).

As a plus point it does contain the original australian audio dub.
Oh well, i will get it as there is no decent release but this is one of my favourite biker/road movies.

OK, you've got your facts and opinions a little wrong.

1.

THIS is NOT a bad cover, I think it looks pretty damn awesome!

2.
It has 2 documentaries - Mel Gibson: Birth Of A Star and Mad Max: the Film Phenomenon, audio commentary with special effects coordinator Chris Murray, cinematographer David Eggby, and production designer Jon Dowding, a Road Rant Facts trivia game, trailers and a number of easter eggs!

DVDFile and DVDTalk have both posted them a few weeks and a few days ago respectively.

So, it's going to be a must buy release, and a great one at that!

I think martinb is talking about the recent UK release (which is indeed a bare-bones version) rather than a US special edition.

Arse!! Didn't know that a special edition was coming out. Is the picture anamorphic?

*hits himself on the head* OOooh yeah? Damn, right he said Warner's, so Warner owns the rights in UK? Hmm, why would they release a barebones couldn't they get the rights for an SE somehow... that sucks.
So how does the cover looks there then.

Ok here:

The UK version of Mad Max is pretty good, the picture is in fact anamorphic and looks terrific, far better than either of the sequels. No extras to speak of unless you count the inclusion of both the original Australian soundtrack and the American dubbed version.

thats good to know mr blue eyes, warner should say so on their packaging that it's anamorphic.

Anyone happen to know what the story is with US rights to the three Mad Max movies?

The upcoming Mad Max special edition looks great, but I don't want to buy it only to eventually see a full three-film box-set laden with extras.

If there's no way all three films can ever be united by one company, that'd help the decision.

They're hopeless. A lot of their early R2 releases are wrongly described as 4:3 on their boxes when they're anamorphic widescreen!

i agree that the new R1 SE looks like a fantastic release, and it's great to see the original aussie soundtrack featuring on there at last. i have to admit though that until this title was announced i never realised it had been dubbed in the US. that should make for some pretty funny listening! :)

however, i know everyone seems to be in love with the new artwork, but whatever you're all on i can't seem to get any! i hate it. imho, it's a total non-event, the large picture of gibson is boring, and it doesn't bring across any of the feeling of the movie. the old UK artwork (on video anyway, not sure about theatrical - plus was this the original aussie art?) was far, far better and is one of those covers you don't forget. it can be seen at the IMDB as the belgian artwork (http://uk.imdb.com/Posters?0079501).

It wasn't just dubbed in the US - for over ten years (roughly 1980-1991) we had to put up with the same dubbed version (and I was aware of it the very first time I saw the film, which didn't help!)

I vividly remember casually switching on the British TV premiere of Mad Max and hearing the Australian accents... and I don't think I've ever scrambled so fast for a blank tape!
