as header really.

I got a Bush2020xi from Argos last year for £60 which turned out to be multi region, but it doesn't look like they stock it anymore.

Anybody know of any others at roughly the same price?

I seem to recall a cheap Alba player of some sort that played everything.

the pacific 1002 from asda is a good player for the price costs about £43 from asda and can be made multi region via the remote & i also think macro vision can be removed via a hack,
it plays every thing iv put in it so far.

i would suggest a dabble in the bargain forums

there have been stacks in the last few weeks at the sub £60 mark.

The Yamada from Amazon is a very popular choice and *cough* does exactly what it says on the tin.

sorry :|

Is that a one time hack to make multi region or is it every time you put a MR disc in?

I would also recommend the Pacific from Asda. The hack is once only, but I strongly recommend telling the machine to output NTSC for a R1/R3 disc, and PAL for a R2/R4 in the set-up menu whenever you change your viewing from R1 to R2 and vice-versa (Otherwise this player will convert R1 to PAL50 with subsequent jerkiness and picture deterioration. It also converts PAL to NTSC which is a bit of a novelty).
Reviews give this player very good marks for picture quality (I read one which the author claimed it was better than his Pioneer). Personally I find the picture quality a bit soft compared to my Toshiba - but it's all personal preference.

If you get one and can't/can't be bothered looking up the hack - mail me and I will mail it to you (I've already done this a few times for forumites).

As for the Alba - I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft bargepole. Reviews state only to get this if cost is paramount over all else including quality.

The Compacks 5000 is back in Safeway at £44.99. It does everything and has progressive scan.

Spend the extra and get the Pioneer. You'll end up doing this when your budget player goes phutt (or starts misbehaving) 18 months later !!
The reason I say this is because it happened to me, three times with different no-name players.

All these budget players are coming out of chinese factories made on the cheap that includes Pioneers, Toshibas and supermarket brands. My Toshiba 330 started playing up after 2 months, Pioneer had a load of problems with psu's on the 350 model. I don't agree that the Pioneer represents superior quality. Certainly my Compacks DVD5000 seems far more dependable in operation with a dvd loader that is ultra fast, reads anything and is whisper quiet. Last year's Which reliability report had the Wharfedale 750 as the most reliable dvd player and this is from information from real owners. As far as I can remember the Wharfedale was made from cheapo chinese components with some assembly in the uk. A lot of Sony and Panasonic dvd players had laser problems and had poor reliablity.

If you seriously want a well made jap brand model I suggest you buy a mid range to top end deck. Many of these are still made in japan or at least not in china and use components of a high standard. If a dvd player is made in china you can be pretty sure its made from very low cost components also made in china.

Also sometimes chinese brand products are simply better than japanese branded and designed electronics. Take liteon cd writers. Far more durable and reliable than most of the jap brands.
