View Full Version : Sound of center speaker - should it sound like this advice?

Would an expert mind advising someone new to AV on a little matter?
I've just bought a Yamaha AV set-up, which consists of an amplifier and some small speakers and a sub. It sounds great, but I have one query. Voices in a movie don't sound as "deep" as that through my TV speaker.
The sub is doing it's job, and it pounds away when it needs to, in fact all the sound is fantastic, I'm just worrying about this one thing. The center speaker doesn't look any smaller than the speakers that will come with the TV (It's a Panasonic flatscreen PL), but I've been told that these small speakers aren't very good compared to big ones.
Or is it simply that I'm used to "faulty" sound through my TV, and that voices aren't meant to sound that deep and in fact the sound through my new set-up is actually the RIGHT sound? It certainly sounds clearer.

I hope this isn't too silly a question, I am new at this :)

If you like the sound then it is doing the job ok for you! Chances are the centre is just a lot crisper than the old telly speakers and that you are just getting used to it. If the yamaha has it, try a 'tone test' to see how things sound on that. You may need to adjust the levels of each speaker to get them sounding 'level' from where you sit to watch.

What he said...

TVs usually make voices sound very boomy because of flabby, poorly controlled mid-bass.
The sound you are getting through your centre speaker is very likely to be much closer to the intended sound.

Yes you get used to it. I have Yamaha and find the sound to be very natural.

Try experimenting with speaker positioning, especially how close to the wall it is and what it is sitting on. These kinds of things can make more difference to the sound than the actual brand of speaker you are using.

I've got a PL1 TV, and it does have quite good speakers, but the surround one should sound better. Your probably just used to "worse" sound.
Check your settings in the amp - make sure your output settings are correct for the type of speaker you are using - if you have sat speakers, make sure the amp is outputting for "small" speakers. This is a mistake I made, but once corrected it was an improvement.
