Do you need an NTSC compatible TV to be able to use a multi region dvd player? Please answer me as this is now becoming a real headache

depends on the player.

My cheapie Bush player from Argos is multi-region & converts everything to pal.

If the player outputs proper NTSC then yes. Otherwise, if the player will ouput NTSC as PAL50 or PAL60 (both will work on a PAL only TV).

I take it that the PS2 outputs as proper NTSC, what about the toshiba dvd video combo available at richer sounds. Also how do you know before you buy it

PAL 50 is proper PAL and works on all UK tv's. PAL 60 does not work on all UK tv's.It should work on most, and virtually all new models, but its not guaranteed, hence a lot of budget plauers doing the full conversion to PAL 50.
A PS2 will output pure NTSC without any internal mod.
Toshiba machines tend to offer only pure NTSC,with no PAL 50 or 60 option

Thanks for your help, I called Richer Sounds yesterday and they said they have plenty of players around 50-60 mark which do the full conversion. Anybody have any recommendations for a budget player with the internal conversion

If you don't need full conversion - don't go that way. Onboard full conversion in DVD players is \rarely done very well - images the wrong shape - very jerky movement.

It will always be better to keep the original 525 line 60hz structure of NTSC video intact - if your TV will handle it.

Don't forget of course that if your TV will accept RGB, then as long as it will accept a 60hz picture then it doesn't matter if the player is outputting NTSC or PAL.
RGB should be the way to set up your system output anyway, as 99.9% of the time it gives a superior picture (Some TV's don't handle RGB as well as others, but most do)
