View Full Version : How do you store?

Silly and sad topic but how do you store your DVD's. AND do you place them alphabetically or by studio, colour etc?

I know this is silly but it's a bit interesting.

I have about 100 or so DVD's and i have them spread over two shelves (each holding about 50 DVD's). They are in the order I bought them pretty much... I dont know why but I like it like this. Yes, all my Bond DVD's etc are all together but they are generally in the order of purchase....

It's a wonderfull thing looking at a shelf full of DVD's...

Agreed. I'm up to about 150. Horizontal on a number of shelves. All Bonds are together etc. Some stand out a bit like T2 Ultimate and that bloody Notting Hill clear case (bought for wife, ahem!)

All snappers together as well. Shame Buffy Season 1 and 2 don't really match!

Directors - all films where I have more than one by the same director, sorted alphabetically by director and then chronologically (i.e. The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Godfather, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now etc). This is by far the biggest section, taking up an entire shelving unit.

Asian - all Hong Kong and Japanese titles grouped together, mostly alphabetically but major figures (Kurosawa, Oshima, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan) singled out and given their own sections.

Russian - my currently 25-strong Russian Cinema Council collection, which will expand to 120 over the next couple of years. Alphabetical order, but I might consider organising them by category (Director, Adaptation, War, Fairytale), since that's how Ruscico do it.

Animation - self-explanatory
Music - self-explanatory
TV - self-explanatory
Porn - self-explanatory

Miscellaneous - everything else, sorted alphabetically.

I have about 100 as well. I store boxsets, 2 discers, and new 1 discers on the shelf underneath my TV and DVD Player.
I have 6 racks full of older titles including a rack on top for clickers.

I'm officially out of room at the moment - great piles of DVDs are forming evrywhere I look. Time to move house I think...

I store mine on a shelf standing with the side cover facing, in alphabetical order
- doesn't matter what they are (singles, boxsets, snappers they go in alphabetical order).

It's getting a difficult job putting new ones in the right place - it can involve moving up to 30 DVDs to the right to create the space
:D

Now have around 180 on a 6 shelf bookshelf, amaray style cases first alphabetically, then snapper style cases alphabetically, then box sets and others that don't fit into the above alphabetically. All a bit anal really, but makes it easy to find the ones I want!

Mine are totally unsorted - apart from a little ghetto of Luc Bessons - and spread out between the upper shelves of a bookcase (out of reach of tiny fingers and, alas, obscuring a shelf full of books), some perched horizontally on the books of another shelf (mainly sn*ppers and other cardboard efforts), whilst the rest - hid from disapproving outlaws (!) - are squirreled away in the bottom of a filing cabinet (and no, they're not the porn ones!!). In other words, total chaos.

I have mine (apprx 125) in a glass fronted, wall mounted cabinet from Ikea. It has 6 glass shelves and looks superb as it is now totally full. But thats the problem, I have nowhere to put them now so have to find another good looking unit! :(
They are in alpha order except the bottom row which has AB tins and Disney stuff.
Snappers are on own shelf in alpha to.

P.S. If anyone can suggest another suitable cabinet type thing please let me know! :)

Mine are stored in a open shut type wardrobe, so I can lock them away. I've run out of room now though, so it looks like I'll have to think about putting up a new shelf on the wall.
My DVDs are kept in the order of which they were purchased.
Im interested to know if anyone stores porn titles in with there normal mainstream ?.

silverpenguin7, I want one like yours. :) Why don't you get another matching one from IKEA?

I use a beech-effect BILLY unit from IKEA. Mine are arranged mainly in alphabetical order by title, except that boxsets have a row to themselves, the Bonds are all together, and snappers and superjewels (abominations the lot'of'em) are grouped separately.

Deaks

A 8 foot by 4 foot walk-in cupboard originally shelved to house 1000+ vhs. My 250ish DVDs are about to exceed their single bank of shelves requiring a bit of a shift around. All the snappers are together alphabetically by disk title, as are the amarays. Box sets are togther on a shelf, the same with sets like Bond's and Stargate's.

The cupboard is carpeted and one wall is covered with movie posters from the local video hire shop.

The light comes on automatically as you open the door. :D

Deaks.

Deaks - love it, brilliant idea. I store my (just under 100 and counting) DVDs in a strange antiquey cabinet thing - and I have easy access to them all... I can see all of them! Bonds first - then Amarays in Alphabetical order - the Super Jewels (which I really like - I'm sorry:eek:   ) in alphabetical order - then Sn*ppers: alphabetically - then LE tins - then Foldout cases in alphabetical order - then the Amarays-in-cardboard-sleeve cases (e.g reissue of Armageddon & X Men) in alphabetical order... *PHEW*:)

PS Nice thread!:D

At the mo i store mine by region. I have those naff black bookshelves you get from argos. R2 take up most of the top shelf whilst r1 are on the one underneath followed by all my videos that i can't give up yet (not until i've got them on DVD anyways:)). Generally amarays, snappers and the like are together but all listed by studio. So Disney are on the left then Fox, Columbia, blah, blah until i get to Warners at the right.

Pretty abysmal layout, i was looking at them the other day thinking they need a nice glass/chrome/neon display to sit in.

Although i've only got about 80 odd i'm still proud of my lil collection.

I have 221 DVD’s and I have them sorted by studio, as this looks the most tidy.
I have them in bookcases that I got from Ikea, 26 fit in each compartment.
As you can imagine it can be very difficult to get them to fit together and I am constantly moving them around. My wife and brother, think I’m a bit sad, but what do they no.

Does anyone else have problems with snappers, because my DVD’s just about fit in the bookcase, when I try to put the snappers in, the lip in the case catches against the next one, and pushes it in to far.

I HATE SNAPPERS

P.S Wife just saw me typing this, and confirmed, “I am sad.”

At one time I used to store them in groups like action, comedy, romance etc by now they are stored in title order with my box sets, Criterions, James Bonds and Hong Kong ones separate.
They are stored in a wall unit which is filling up faster that my wife thinks it should.

I've got films sorted alphabetically, apart from boxsets and tv stuff and the Bond films on separate shelves.

I have mine on two shelves over my tv and just store in order of purchase mix and match style, any old region, boxsets and singles, dts titles all over the place etc.

Although I'm going to reconsider this method and put them in some form of grouping. I'm off to Ikea next week to get a 'Billy'

With a collection that is approaching silly proportions, I have bought a couple of those "case logic" soft covered albums filed the discs in alphabetical order and confined the cases to a big box in the attic - apart from the special box sets that is. Easy to hide those little extra purchases from the boss wife person this way!

Won’t this in itself damage the disks? I thought they had to be suspended, like they are in the box.

hey, i use them!! quite like em too :) Got 2 of the taller ones actually, and this is how my DVD collection is stored....oh yeah, 30 armarays (roughly) to a shelf...

Shelf 1 = Evil Dead Trilogy/Halloween SE/Halloween H20/Kevin Smith films/Disney SEs then American films stored alphabetically over shelf 1, 2 and 3....
4th Shelf of Snappers in alphabetic order including music DVDs (all snapper/cardboard cases too)....

5th shelf with Hong Kong films, 6th shelf (not full) with Japanese/Taiwanese films
6th shelf with Anime

my X-Files boxsets prop up the not full shelfs, and boxset cases (i take the separate films out and stick em in the collection for easy access) are placed strategically around the room (with other ornamental type objects)...

God this is REALLY sad!!!! :D

I'm constantly running out of space, on last count I had 487 or so, it should be over 535 now, aproximately.
It is EXTREMELY hard to keep them in alphabetical order as I do with such numbers, as if you get say Angel's Dance dvd, you gotta move over 500 discs a space to the right on all the shelves to make room for that one. So I leave some space each time for extra discs, then it looks bad with all the holes. So what I do now is I have these 4 level wooden shelves, alphabetically going in four rows from left to right, and instead of filling the whole first 3 rows completely and leaving space at the end of the 4th bottom row, I add a new shelf on the right of the last one, and keep Numbers and A-E on first row, F-K on second, etc so I only have to move each row to the right to make space and not right and down and right and down and right and down and... you know!
Now about 8 days ago I ran into another problem, I'm out of wall space, I hit the balcony wall pretty much and I've turned right and now there is a door and a table and anyway, I have nowhere to put another 4 level shelf to the right of.
Did you see Clerks? Remember the guy had a cracker or a chip in the salsa can with a pointy triangular tail up from it driving it around with "Too doo... too doo.... too doo too doo too doo Salsa Shark! We're gona need a biggah boat" hehe Well, I'm gona need a bigger boat too if I'm continue to shelf the DVDs, so Im gona have to ditch all these shelves and get a few 6 or 7 story ones.
If I'm alive in 2035 or so, I'm gona be in a sliding chair going up and down through a dozen floors of DVD shevles!
Too doo too doo too doo we're gona need a bigger building

There was a similar thread a couple of months ago, and I just lurked amazed that no-one else stored them like me.

Mine are in order of distributor, ie. all Paramount together, all Columbia Tristar together, if only for the reason that the spines look nicer together. There's obvious problems ie. Austin Powers films as an example, being thru' EiV and Pathe, and with imported discs being with different distributors.

I then store them in clear plastic boxes from Ikea (Kassetten?) which conveniently hold about 20, bunged on a set of shelves. Because the boxes are clear, you can see what's in them without having to open them, and they also hold most boxsets, snappers and superjewels. And 'cos they're in boxes, you can store them face on and get more on a shelf. At the moment, I'm on my 12th box.

I'm toying with going alphabetical, but change scares me :p

I've got three shelves:

2 shelves are the same and hold 50 DVDs, each while and the other is just for keep cases and holds 39.

I store keep cases on 1st and 2nd shelves in alphabetical order. While the 3rd shelve I have box sets like Die Hard Trilogy, Seven 2 disc etc and below them I store my snapper cases.

Each case type I give it's own section. I am now out of space for my DVDs! What am I going to do?

I have a small bookcase which used to contain VHS and will take 50 discs per shelf (ish) so as my collection is just over 60 and I have three shelves I've got a way to go until I need to rethink (at this rate, probably late next year :)).

My discs are sorted alphabetically by title, just the way I have always done things with my CD\Video collection so it got continued onto the DVD collection.

2 Days in the Valley - Yojimbo

I store by region, then by case, and finally by distributor. That way all the R1/R3 (basically all NTSC) titles are on one shelf of my cabinet, with all the amarays and alphas from Anchor Bay to Universal grouped together, followed by the snappers and cardboard cases (separated from the plastic cases by an old un-used amaray, because we all know how much those snappers scratch them...). The second shelf holds all the R2/R4 (PAL) titles, arranged similarly but with all the clear plastic cases together (they just look nicer that way).

Anal, aren't we. :D

I'm thinking of going a different route soon - maybe alphabetically (makes finding stuff easier) by title or director. I might start an Asian section soon, also. Like anyone really cares.

The first 18 DVDs I bought are at the bottom.
The second 18 DVDs I bought are at the centre.
The latest DVDs I've bought are at the top.

Everything is mixed in with each other, but the three Bond DVDs I have; GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough are apart.

Hey guys....

I store my DVDs either horizontally on a LaserLine wall rack or vertically in a cabinet, depending on case type. If the case is either Amaray or Alpha, the go on the wall rack (this is under very strict temperature and humidity conditions, and there is insufficient mass to worry about warping under these conditions). The snappers (crappers?) go in the cabinet, because of the flimsy nature of the case, as do the boxed sets. In all cases, I put each DVD case in a comic book bag. This serves to 1) protect the artwork on the snappers 2) keeps the snappers from breaking because of opening, closing, opening, closing, etc. and 3) keeps dust and fingerprints off the cases and hence off the discs (they are not airtight, ya know...) Currently I have room for another 60 or 70 titles (singles), before I have to get another house...:D As far as ordering, I do not do anything special, just keep sequels together.... I do maintain a database of all my discs - both DVD and LD - with all of the specs, and catalog them both alphabetically and by release year for easy reference.

I use 5 of the argos cd/dvd storage units (Cat No. 875/1289 if anyone is intrested) to store my discs, and I store them in alphabetical order. It looks a bit messy with the different types of cases, but a least I know where everything is.

I agree with the guy and his missus up the thread who said this was all a little sad!
However -
a) the case logics have not scratched any disc to date - though I take care when I withdraw (as you should!) I have actually seen more damage from poorly manufactured centre spindles and cases than from a plastic sleeve.
b) apart from very few exceptions (boxed sets, special editions and the like) the cover graphics are generally appalling and ill considered and are not worth more than a cursary glance - (think of some of the music CD's and I think you'll take my point) - Why store them like works of art - they certainly aren't things of beauty?
c) By using a case they are hidden away from prying/envious/nosey eyes. None of those fraternal problems here!

Right now I have most of mine lined up on the top row of one of those mini-cabinet things (the only row the right height to hold DVDs) next to my computer desk. The only problem with this method is that you have to tip the cabinet over to get one out  The rest of them (newer DVDs mainly) are all over the place, some stacked on my base unit, some on top of my printer, and a few stacked on top of computer game boxes.

Damn, I need a better system, but there's nowhere near to my computer that would let me store them!

I never lend my brother or sister any of my precious DVDs but they still got their hands on them!!!
I made the mistake of giving my brother a key to my flat and when I was out of the country he went into my flat and "borrowed" about 90% of them!!! He didn't tell me and he had returned them before I got home BUT they were not in the same order I left them in!

I have all mine in alphabetical order, except the Bonds which are in chronological order before the A's, all sitting beautifully on what was a book shelf.

When my brother returned them he just stuck them in a couple of piles on the shelf and left!! Criminals always make one fatal mistake.... :D

I have about 225 DVD's stored alphabetically. I have very recently re-housed my collection. Yesterday I went to Ikea, Thurrock and bought the following components from the 'HUSAR' range.

1 x underframe
2 x frames
4 x shelves
4 x solid doors.

Once completed the whole unit stands 170 cm tall and 83 cm wide and looks very impressive. Each frame has two added shelves, the whole thing holds a total of 300 DVD's.

I did have my collection on open shelves but my German Shepherd thought he'd like to eat some of them so now they're behind closed doors!!!

When funds allow, (and before the range is discontinued) I intend to purchase the same again giving me enough capacity for the next three years, or do I mean three months.

Does anyone here use those Warner case protectors you can get from *********? I have some for my small collection of sn*ppers and they ought to protect Amarays from damage when stored alongside (I have mine separate). Look quite good too, though it's a bit of a fiddle getting them out.
