Im new to this Widescreen stuff, I recently got a KV32DX40 Digital TV.

I have the TV set to auto so it shows as broadcast (I think). This is a bit annoying as some freeview seems to be 4:3
What setting do you use Wide/zoom/smart

I also am baffled with the Digital/analouge picture ratio.
On analouge the main channels are in widescreen with a thin black band top and bottom. In Digital(freeview) they fill the screen

Does ITN broadcast its news in 4:3? seems odd as most of ITV seems widescreen??

Auto.

Enough of the stuff on Cable is widescreen now.

Prefer BBC New 24 which has been widescreen for ages.

I use 'smart' when watching freeview through my sony tv. The only problem is that on Sky Sports news it cuts the tops and bottoms off and you have to flick it to 'wide' for some reason. I don't use 'auto' because i don't like watching things in 4:3 on a widescreen - just looks odd.

I use the same settings as psycho_kicks above.
It works fine for me, but on my tv (36FS70) if the bottom of the picture is missing some important info I can move the screen upwards to reveal it.
Don't know if you have this feature?

I watch most 4:3 stuff in either Smart or if it looks a bit strange as some programmes can I use 14:9

Zoom for all 16:9 films broadcast on analogue. Should be getting a matching Sony freeview box before Xmas.

I have a 28DX20.

I use smart for 4:3 digital TV and wide for anamoprhic DVD's and 16:9 TV digital channels.

I don't use 4:3 for 4:3 TV much as it looks too small.

I use Zoom for analogue widescreen TV and non anamorphic DVD's.

Scuse my ignorance (but Ive only ever had a 4:3 TV
But do non anamaphoric DVDs show on a widescreen TV (set to auto) with black bars top and bottom in 4:3 size?

I don't have a set with auto setting.

A non anamorphic will come out squashed and massive borders. The zoom is needed to get the height correct. There will be still be border if the picture is 2:35:1 to one or greater.

I assume if auto is used (when the DVD player is set to 16:9), it will automatically go into zoom mode. If the DVD is anamorphic it will automatically go into wide mode.

This doesn't apply to 4:3 TV's as the player is set to 4:3 and the picture will be correct straight away.

Not many DVD's are non anamorphic. I have only got two out of over 300.

I don't have an auto setting either (28LS35), but I will always watch in original ratio of the programme. The smart mode just looks wrong, and camera pans across geometric objects look awful on that mode!

I've occasionally watched a few minutes of a 14:9 programme in smart mode (which don't seem to me to end up as badly distorted as 4:3 programmes for some reason), but I always end up switching back to 14:9 or 4:3 mode.
