Multiregion options for JVC THA-9R

A work colleague has a JVC THA-9R system, and wants to make it multiregion. The only options I've found so far are a chipped handset for £19.99 or the 'tool' option from DVD Chips. Does anyone know if there happens to be a remote hack for this machine like the JVC THA-5R, or are the above the only viable options?

beware of anywhere offering a chipped handset .... it can only be done by chipping or renting the upgrade tool
