I would like to restart the thread on the french release of the Kielowski Boxset (Blue, White, Red).

Does anyone know if it will have english subtitles?

The Amazon.fr site did not have details other than it was an MK2 release. I sent an enquiry to MK2 but there was no reply.

You do mean the Three Colours Trilogy, right? If so - what's it about? I have seen they are shown of Film Four a lot (which I presume to be a good thing) and if anyone has seen them: please help me out.

Thanks, Matt

Apparently - though I'm not 100% certain about this - the MK2 discs are identical to those that will be distributed by Artificial Eye in this country, so you might as well go for the latter (which are out towards the end of October).

It looks as if they will be, but no UK box set (amazon and Play are showing the single discs) and still no cover art/pics on the French retail sites. Frustrating.

The only difference (apart from not giving UK buyers the cheaper option of a boxset :( ) is that the UK discs are said to be anamorphic widescreen in the Play.com listings, whereas the French discs, according to Amazon.fr are Full Screen format, which I take to mean 4:3 and no English subtitles.

In which case the only option for me has to be the UK discs.

I wouldn't trust Amazon one iota when it comes to technical details - and I'd be astounded if the MK2 discs really were fullscreen, because:

(a) their other discs are anamorphic widescreen where necessary (the Truffaut collection, for instance);
(b) MK2 boss Marin Karmitz is also the producer of the films, and is therefore highly unlikely to present them in anything other than their best possible versions;
(c) the French are even more anal about anamorphic transfers than even the most obsessive posters here!

That's what I thought, especially the anamorphic reference. I would like to order the box set using one of the voucher codes in the bargains forum, but if there's no English subs, then my French isn't good enough to justify spending the money on spec.

Is there a retailer listing the titles that mentions English subs as I couldn't find any info on the MK2 site?

The only one I could find with any info was CineStore (http://www.cinestore.com/html/fiche_produits.php?groupe=1&page=1&id=10409) - unfortunately it claims that there are no subtitles, not even French ones. This was for Trois couleurs: Blanc and it's the same for the others.

Of course, you have to take all info on pre-orders with a pinch of sal...

Think I'll wait until someone has the boxset in their hands at the end of October before ordering. Hopefully the English subs will be there and I can save some money buying from Amazon.fr with the 50FF off voucher.

Nov 6th release date now - has that been changed or did I just dream Oct 23rd ?? The (tedious) saga continues.

These 3 films are collectively some of the greatest pieces of contemporary cinema.

Each film's title/colour relates to one of the colours in the French flag and, in turn, their representation of freedom (Blue), equality (White) and fraternity (Red).

To explain the story of each would simply not do the films justice since their strengths are more in the crafting of the story, the oustanding performances, masterful direction, camerawork, music - everything about these films is simply great.

One final thought - if you do not watch them in order, at least save Red 'til last so as not to spoil the conclusion.

Many of my questions about this box set have been covered here, but it looks as if we'll have to wait for someone to actually get hold of it or review it - boo!

Looks like there won't be any english subtitles at all.
look <a href="http://www.dvdshoppingcenter.com/fiche.asp?id=16083" target="_new"> here</a>.

I sent an email to MK2 about the subtitles a while back but their answer was rather cryptic... yes there were going to be subtitles but I has the impression that they were referring to the AE version. As far as I understand AE will be sourcing the master from MK2 which can only be good news. The question remains though about whether there'll be 5:1 sound or not on the AE release, but as they were filmed in standard stereo (or was it mono?) there won't be much missed...

The original films were in Dolby Stereo. Artificial Eye usually releases their films in Dolby 2.0, which is fine by me - in fact, I'd prefer that to a 5.1 remix which by definition cannot have been supervised or approved by the director.

I got an e-mail from Amazon.fr saying that the release of the Three Colours set has definitely been put back to Nov 6th (same as the Truffaut box set).

Looks like the Artificial Eye releases on Oct 29th will be the one to go for now, or is the delay with the mk2 disks likely to affect the AE releases since they are coming from the same source?

Also, I think the AE disks were announced as having a 5.1 soundtrack, so that would be a first for them.

Well the info I got implied the mastering had been done and sent off with subtitles and all (hopefully not burnt in! ) to AE... But that's reading somewhat between the lines...
Maybe it's some blooming marketing ploy to make it's release closer to Christmas

I know what you mean there MB... Hopefully they got Preisner in tosupervise some of the transfers as I'd hate to see his wonderful soundtracks messed about with. Still I'm trusting MK2 to not go crazy on this one - so I hope my trust is not misplaced;)

Wasn't there some talk in a previous thread of the french boxset containing a fourth disc? Has anyone heard any details of that?
Of course most of this is of little use if there are no subtitles.
Has play247 got the best price for the UK DVD's at £14.99?

It's so confusing! These guys also claim Le Placard has no English subtitles while many other sites (Amazon, Cinestore) say it does.

I think we are just going to have to wait until someone actually has the discs in their mitts!

It contains a documentary called Kiselowski on Kieslowski but not much more info has leaked out.

whitecot: ...FYI... according to the DVDFR site, the DVD of Le Placard not only features optional English subtitles, but also an optional English DD 5.1 dub...
