View Full Version : Other Peoples Setups...
i've noticed, a lot of the time i'll go to a friends house, and they'll have a widescreen tv and cable box and dvd and all that lot, and looking thru the menu's it'll appear to have been setup by a monkey. so i spend the time setting it up (ie telling the cable box to output in RGB and in 16:9 rather than composite and 4:3 etc) and i'll sit back, flick thru it and think "yup, that looks miles better."
so why is it they always say "can you put it back to how it was before?".
sigh :)

What's also annoying is that you set their digibox to RGB but they continue to "select" the digibox by hitting Channel 6 on their TV's remote rather than EXT1/AV1 etc.
I had this recently when I helped someone set up a load of brand new kit (decent 32" widescreen DD TV too and some decent SCART leads). He insisted that I tuned one of the TV channels into his Sky box so that it could be selected via a TV channel! I did point out that when switching the Sky box on the TV would automatically switch to AV1 etc but he said they never switch the Sky box to standby anyway)!
The bottom line is that we are enthusiasts but the general public are blissfully ignorant in these matters.
Matt.

i hate it when blokes to this to my tv/tivo/sky setup.
Its like me coming round and rearranging your wardrobe. Just cos you think it looks better, does not mean i do. You get used to the setup and picture signal. ANd it gets compex trying to video stuff off sky, and be able to watch normal tv.
But hey, next time i'm round your way, i'll come and change your desktop set up, and seat height, you'll love me for it!!

yeah, do that with my friends set ups. Go through the menu's and change every thing to the correct setting. My mate has a 4:3 t.v and has his dvd play set to P&S i told him that it's wrong but he said he likes it cause it fills the screen:oh-hum:

Don't even get me started on that! I live in the US who are a nation of P&S loving people  My boss when he bought his dvd player had one requirement and that was that it would zoom WS dvd's to fill the screen :oh-hum:
If its right to their eyes, why should anyone else care? unless you're round theirs watching movies every night.

Exactly. My mum & dad bought their first widescreen TV recently. When I visited it was set to panaramic mode so everything fills the screen. They are perfectly happy with it so I didn't fiddle with it. If I still lived there it would be a different matter.

but my pc is password protected, and already in el33bt mode, and impossible to make look better :D also my seat isn't adjustable, so you'd have to put some books under it i guess ;)
yeh but we're not talking about preferences we're talking about a right way and wrong way of doing it. I've got to the point now where if people don't want to use RGB over compo, or would rather watch full screen I let 'em... I've got better things to do than argue with the sort of person who prefers P&S!:brickwall

It's a bit presumptuous to rearrange their set-up if someone hasn't asked you to. Fair enough you can suggest to someone that it might look better if you did X, Y and Z, but they're perfectly at liberty to turn round and say they prefer it the way it is.
You have to control the urge to tweak sometimes, you know.

I don't agree that either way is right or wrong. Persoanlly I like to see thigns in their original ratio whether that is 4x3,1.85:1 or whatever. If that means black bars then so be it. Other peopel like to have their TV screen filled. It may look wrong to you and me but if they like it that way then fair enough.

indeed, but im talking about people i've asked permission, not just snuck into their house like an evil santa and ****** around with their tv.
makes you wonder why people buy a widescreen tv, then have the dvd player exporting in 4:3 permenantly even tho they have majority widescreen films. i'll gladly swap an old 4:3 tv for their widescreen beast :)
eventually they do learn tho. and most of the people i've said "you've done this wrong, want me to change it?" do actually say "ahhhh thats better , cheers" i was just making a light hearted thread....

Some people just aren't into these things. My sister was calling me to go over and 'fix her video'. When I went over she asked me to get rid of the black bars that were appearing on the TV..the AV channel they were using was stored in 4:3 and they wanted to view 4:3 stuff in widescreen mode!
"Er, the button below the blue one there will cycle through the picture sizes"
"Just leave it at that one!"
"Well if a DVD is anamorphic you'll have to change to 16:9 mode.."
"..Ana wha? 16:9?"
"Er..ok its fine"
Her husband is even worse amazingly enough!

i've got a W/S TV but still prefer Sky set to 4:3 as recorded films play better on a non-W/S TV, otherwise they look stretched.

I have messed with a few setups and have yet to have been told off for doing so. Most people who are unsure are happy to have someone they feel comfortable asking. Which reminds me, must pop round to my Mum's to set the time on her video...
I'm very proud of my fiancee.
She's generally very good with AV stuff anyway (ie. if my brother in law is watching 4:3 football forced to W/S, she'll normally pepper away with 'Wow! They're doing really well, especially considering how short and fat they all are, and how they're playing with a rugby ball') but on the weekend she uttered the engagement affirming "I think your tint is out."
I did consider that it might be rude to just butt in and fix it, so I joined her in repeated criticism instead.

The reason people watch 4:3 stretched to widescreen for football is to keep an eye on the score I think.
