Can anyone confirm ifthis (http://www.*********.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=15426) version is uncut or not?

I checked dvdsoon.com and it seems that the Canadians are going to get a release on the 25th of November.... any info on that?

Ta.

R2 is cut by 6s...not much but a cut's a cut.

Yeah, thats the Animeigo release, which is uncut, and apparently has a much better picture than the R2 one.

As Ralph pointed out this is this Animeigo release which is as good as it will ever get and definately uncut. The cover at ********* is for the VHS, I think the DVD is different.

I think it's Sword Of Vengeance and then Baby Cart At The River Styx, mostly the latter.

BTW, although the Animego versions will undoubtedly be nicer, for any cheapskates (me) Virgin have all six films in their current BOGOF offer so it works out to £9 a film...

Yep, the problem getting them cheap from places does lie with animeigo. They sell them on their own site and then employ some kind of holdback deal to all other retailers which means you just have to wait! Well worth it though, all great films!:D

Believe me when I tell you that the quality of the films/discs will make the wait worthwhile. The problem is almost certainly AnimEigo themselves so I doubt very much if another retailer will be able to source them any quicker. I paid around £15 each for them earlier this year ( the cheapest I could find at the time ) so the price at DVDPacific is, in my opinion, a bargain.

6 I think. I saw the first one a few months ago and it was really good - I'll picking up the rest of them soon I hope. Was also really impressed with the cinematography considering how old it it.

They have been available in the U.S.A. since July, 2003, so I assume it must be a distribution thing. I e-mailed DVDSoon back in May/June asking if they planned to stock these titles at which time they said no, hence the reason I went ahead and purchased them from DV-Depot ( along with 'Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo.' ) Looking forward to the release of the remaining Lone Wolf/Zatoichi titles on AnimEigo and will almost certainly purchase them from DVDSoon or DVDPacific.

The next instalment in the Zatoichi series on AnimEigo ( Zatoichi: The Outlaw ) is up for pre-order at DVDPacific with a release date of 9 March, 2004, and the next installment in the Lone Wolf Series ( Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart To Hades ) is due for release very soon.

The first eleven have been released in Region 1 by HomeVision with more ( not sure how many ) to follow. AnimEigo have the rights to some of the later films ( again not sure how many. ) They have already released Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo and plan to release Zatoich: The Outlaw in March 2004.

The first eleven discs on HomeVision are currently available from DVDPacific for US$13.96 each ( approximately £7.68 ) plus postage. If my memory serves me correctly, the first two are in black and white while the remainder are in colour. The quality of the first two films could be better but things improve substantially by the time of the third film.

Having watched the first two Lone Wolf and Cub films and the first three Zatoichi films I have to say I prefer the latter series.

As far as I can tell, the Zatoichi series does have a story arc, so you would be well advised to start with the first disc in the series ( Zatoichi: Blind Swordsman 1 - The Story Of Zatoichi )

I think that there is an early ArtsMagic video to DVD transfer.

I got 'Babycart at the River Styx' in a boxed set with 'Zatoichi meets the one armed swordman' and 'Lady Snowblood' and the transfer looks no way as good judging by the screen shots posted by Jack Torrence of the AnimEigo version.

The ArtsMagic dvds are standard conversions (NTSC>PAL) of the old Samurai Cinema/Animeigo laserdisc transfers, and some of them (all?) are cut.

I ordered both 'Sword and 'River Styx back in October last year. 'Sword shipped just before Christmas.

I believe the Canadian is exactly the same as the US one. I'll check the cover to make sure there are no "intrusive Koch" logos, and report back later tonight.

Well, i checked, and i can't see anything on either cover or disc that shows it to be a Canadian release. The only unusual thing was an 18+ certificate on the back, which i've never seen on either US or Canadian releases before (maybe Animeigo's own cert).

This thread had wetted my appetite to see these films, but looking on the web there seems to be all kinds of Lone Wolf and Cub stuff out there.

Thanks for any advice :notworthy

Basically, buy Lone Wolf and Cub : Sword of Vengeance and Lone Wolf and Cub : Baybcart at River Styx both on R1 Animiego release. They are excellent transfers etc.

DO NOT BUY ANY OTHER VERSIONS. :nono:

The third and fourth films (Babycart in Hades, Babycart in Peril) are being released by Animeigo in a couple of months (20/4).

These films are totally awesome bloodthirsty, intelligent, well made and generally outstanding productions of the samurai genre. The western released Shogun's Assassin is a chopped up and pasted together version of the first 2 films. :gag: :D

Stick with the Region 1 releases by AnimEigo as the transfers are superb. The first two have already been released and three and four will follow in April, 2004, or thereabouts. The remaining two will probably be released later in the year. There is a story arc and you really do need to purchase all six.

Baby Cart to Hades and Baby Cart in Peril have only recently been made available for purchase on the AnimEigo website ( U.S.A. and Canada residents only ) and they normally retain sole selling rights for new releases for several months before allowing other retailers to source and supply them.

They don't ship weekends but sometimes same day during the week. Most often for me seems to be next day though. There is something on their site about shipping same day if order placed before 7am their time.

My ratings are

Sword of Vengeance - 4/5

Great atmosphere, solid compelling story, engaging performances and fantastic action with great visuals.

Babycart at River Styx - 2/5

Good Fun but thin plot, not much sword on sword action, more fantasy type combat. Amusing Cart uses but overall not much depth.

Can you all give me the low down on the rest of the films, as BARS didn't make me want to continue buying the rest, but I want to be sure.

1. Sword of Vengeance
2. Baby Cart at the River Styx
3. Baby Cart to Hades
4. Baby Cart in Peril
5. Baby Cart in the Land of Demons
6. White Heaven in Hell

Thanks :)

I have several AnimEigo titles ( Lone Wolf & Cub: Baby Cart To Hades & Baby Cart In Peril; Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman: The Outlaw & The Festival Of Fire; Lady Snowblood ) on pre-order at DVDSoon. Until recently they were listed as 'Pre-Order.' However, on checking my account tonight, all of these titles are showing as 'In Transit' which I assume means they are on route from AnimEigo/Koch to DVDSoon. Unfortunately Lady Snowblood: Love Song Of Vengeance is also listed as 'In Transit' which I find strange as according to the AnimEigo website this disc is still in the replication stage.

I've had somewhat of a samurai revival after watching the new zatoichi. I've seen the first 3 lonewolf and cub films, and seven samurai and yojimbo, and the first 2 original zatoichi films.

I must say I found the Zatoichi films to be more enjoyable despite being about 10 years older than the lonewolf and cub films.

I think Shintaro Katsu is the more talented of the two brothers, I thought it was nice that they even played brothers in Zatoichi 2.

Capture of Daigoro at the wel in Styx

The Artsmagic releases are NTSC>PAL conversions of the old Animeigo/Samurai Cinema laserdisc transfers, with the subtitles made for the LDs.
I haven't bothered to compare my laserdiscs with the Animego dvds I've received, but the reviews I've read indicate that the new ones are even better.

There were, I believe 26 Zatoichi films all together and I think AnimEgo are planning to release all of them. The following are either currently available or up for pre-order:

1 The Tale of Zatoichi
2 The tale of Zatoichi continues
3 New tale of Zatoichi
4 - Zatoichi The Fugitive
6 - Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold
7 - Zatoichi's Flashing Sword
8 - Fight, Zatoichi, Fight
9 - Adventures of Zatoichi
10 - Zatoichi's Revenge
11 - Zatoichi And The Doomed Man
12 - Zatoichi And The Chess Expert
13 - Zatoichi's Vengeance
15 - Zatoichi Cane Sword
Zatoichi Conspiracy
Zatoichi At Large
Zatoichi The Festival Of Fire
Zatoichi The Outlaw
Zatoichi In Desperation
Zatoichi meets Yojimbo
21 - Zatoichi: The Festival of Fire

I've got the first six and if you liked Lone Wolf and Cub then you'll probably enjoy these as well.

I've been very impressed by the Animego releases and I wondered how these compared. Bear in mind I've only watched the first 3, but I had a quick look at No.4:

The first two Zatoichi films are wide screen but non anamorphic the transfers, however, are very good. Also worth noting is the discs are R0.

The third film is in colour, wide screen anamorphic and again the transfer is very good. If you have the LW&C discs then the transfer for the 3rd Zatoichi film is just as good. I've a had a quick look at the 4th in the series and it looks just as good as the 3rd. Note that 3 & 4 are R1.

I didn't look at 5 and 6 as they only came a week ago and are still in their cellaphane covers and by the time I've unwrapped them I'll be too knackered to view them.;)

So apart from the cellaphane wrapping no complaints.

I just recieved Animeigo print of Sword Of Vengeance from PlayUSA.com. yet again.... its bloody brilliant!!
Havin to put up with The Artsmagic VHS Copies for 5 years now. Which also was shonky in comparison to the early 80s US Shogun Assassin in contrast and color levels.
But this suppasses them all.
The Misumi Kenji Films are really beautifully shot, opulient.
For a chambara series.
lots of spaghetti westerns motifs. Close ups of Eyes etc...

its like a different film in its correct ratio...

Ive never been so happy with a DVD since
Once Upon A Time in the West last October.

Thanks :)

I have not seen that one yet, I am trying to watch them in order. I have seen up to 3 now. I heard that the earlier films are best, but as it goes along the films become a bit more trashy with blood whereas the earlier ones are more arty and samuraish...if that makes any sense....

Have a look at the score/reviews on IMDB.

It's important to see Yojimbo or a Zatoichi film before viewing this stinker. Otherwise you might ascribe guilt by association. The progenitors are wonderful. Yojimbo gave rise to the vehicle which brought Clint Eastwood to stardom - A Fistful of Dollars. Zatoichi films are the mold for the current Xena and Hercules series. Unfortunately, Z... to Y... lives up to none of the promise of its title. It may possibly be the worst film featuring Zatoichi. The surprising thing is that Katsu and Mifune reprise their roles from the original. If you happen to see this one first, don't despair - the originals are real gems.

Ok so I ordered Hades, In Peril and Land of Demons from DVDsoon, The first 2 have shipped (only took them maybe a month to pack the discs, where the "soon" bit of their name comes from i have no idea) but demons is still on preorder.

Now its come down to $12.98 so I'm trying to cancel my preorder and re order (with white heaven) but the "Cancel This Order" button does absolutely nothing.

Am I stupid to wonder a. why don't dvdsoon just adjust the price of your pre-order and b. why cant you get refunds only credit?

Can anyone help me out here?

Edit: Ok figured it out, I had to mash the cancel button about 10 times, close down my browser and relogin to my account for the change to show up.

Lone Wolf and Cub: Babycart at Hades - ***.5/*****

Good, but a little slow maybe. It just didn't seem as tight as the first two, the action was probably a bit better than Babycart at River Styx. To anyone who hasn't already got it, though I'm sure most people on this thread have already, but 'Sword of Vengeance' seems to be OOP from today.

On Sale until June 11th!

The AnimEigo site is down at the moment so I cannot check it out for you but I believe they have stopped including the Interactive Program Notes as an insert as they are now contained on the disc itself. My copy of Lady Snowblood had the insert included whereas my copy of Lady Snowblood: Love Song Of Vengeance did not.

Edit:-
From the AnimEigo website :-

March 10, 2004: I.P.N. on every DVD!
We have had such a positive response to our 'Interactive Program Notes' material on the Samurai Cinema DVDs, that we have decided to include this feature on all upcoming Anime discs as well! All the background information normally found on the printed liner note inserts will now be on the DVD, replacing the printed cards. All cultural information for previously released DVDs will still be available on our website.

A shame. I really liked looking at the liner notes while watching each one :dork:Apparently the said interactive notes are to be made available on-line at www.animeigo.com in a very easily downloadable PDF file. As well as the interactive notes being missing from Baby Cart in the Land Of Demons, I have also noticed that the disc and case for that film are different from the other five in the set ( 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6. ) Looks as though that disc may have been pressed/packaged by a different manufacturer which may explain the missing inserts.

I had also hoped that White Heaven In Hell would have been originally designed to be the final part. It does feel like we'll see some closure with the Retsudo storyline through most of the film.

Sadly it seems that WHIH wasn't going to be the last one when it was made. Either it wasn't a financial success or they didn't want to make any more.
