I love Fargo, The Man Who Wasn't There and O Brother, Where Art Thou?...liked Intolerable Cruelty...didn't care much for Raising Arizona - so will I like this?
Asking as it has just been released on R2 DVD.

It's a terrific gangster movie in the spirit of the great Warners Cagney/Bogart flics, with dialogue that absolutely crackles, script and direction that lifts the spirits, a handful of really fantastic set pieces, a marvellous score from Carter Burwell, and memorable performances from all concerned, but particularly from Gabe Byrne and Albert Finney...and lots of hats.
One of my favourite Coen Brothers movies, in fact one of my favourite movies full stop. They do make 'em like this any more!

So many films, so little time...
What he said. And get Barton Fink while you're at it! ;)

Absolutely right
In my top 2 Coen Brother's' movies along with Fargo. It also has a nice streak of black humour going all the way through it. The only way it can disappoint is if you go in expecting a Goodfellas/Godfather type of Gangster movie.

I love Miller's Crossing & Barton Fink. Don't like their other stuff as much.
I am no Coen fan, but Millers CRossing is a masterpiece exceeded only by Godfather.
A must buy!
Really enjoyed the film and most of the other Coen films too. Can't comment on the dvd too much as I watched it on the 4:3 TV in my student house through its speakers :(.
I'm surprised not to see many reviews of this DVD yet.
Are there any plans to release Barton Fink on R2 soon or should I just get the R1?

Don't know, but for me, Millers Crossing is the only Coen brothers film that I haven't liked. It's completely different to anything else they've done and, mainly due to Albert Finney and Gabriel Byrne, just plain dreary. The outstanding cinematography and the odd moment of hilarity from John Turturro are the only things that kept me from turning it off.
Get Barton Fink instead - it's an incredible film

Excellent film, I saw it for the first time the other day after owning it for months. Well acted, beatufully shot, and it has an excellent script.
I didn't like Barton Fink though, it just annoyed the hell out of me!
I generally enjoy Coens movies, but both Millers Crossing and Barton Fink are still sitting on my shelf unopened...
Must get round to them.
I have to say I find Barton Fink unbearable in all its 'writers block' smugness. Cant stand it. Millers Crossing on the other hand is brilliant!

Thanks guys, I'm sold.
Sorry to disagree but I found it dull as ditchwater.
Nicely shot, yeah in bits, but most of it takes place in darkended rooms! "The script crackles" .. sounds like somebody's been reading to many reviews!!!!!
Thought O Brother Where Art Thou? was a masterpiece. Liked Fargo and The Man Who Wasn't There though.

Wow! You know, you're right? What was I thinking of? All those darkened rooms, and those hats, and that crackling script.
It's total rubbish.

Not had a chance to pick Miller's Crossing up yet. Still got to get around to watching Fargo and The Man Who Wasn't There.
Didn't realise Barton Fink was out on DVD, that'll be the next stop for ye olde VISA card methinks. :D
Liked it when I saw it in the mid-nineties, but a recent viewing proved it to be occasionally amusing, yet for the most part overly self-conscious, and slightly empty. Pretty dull and smart-arsey really... Didn't much care for the man who wasn't there either; tediously, self-consciously silly plot developments undermine Thornton's performance. O brother was ok, Raising arizona, blood simple and barton fink are great, and fargo and the big lebowski [which somehyow manages to be indulgent and great at the same time!] get better and better as time passes.

I don't rate the other Coen brother's films much (haven't seen Blood Simple yet) but Miller's Crossing is the DADDY!!! :D

I love all Coen Bros. movies. Millers Crossing is a gorgeous blend of sight and sound, beautifully written, magnificent in execution.
Millers Crossing is in my top 10 movies of the 90'2 and my top 25 of all time. Everything from the intricately woven plot to the almost parodically beatuiful script works for me. A thing of beauty.

I like a nice bit of crackling:...
Johnny Caspar: You think that I'm some guinea, fresh off the boat, and you can kick me! But I'm too big for that now. I'm sick a' takin the scrap from you, Leo. I'm a' of marching into this goddamn office to kiss your Irish ass. And I'M SICK A' THE HIGH HAT!
[Puts on his hat and coat]
Johnny Caspar: Yiz fancy pants, all a yiz.
Leo O'Bannion: Johnny, you're exactly as big as I let you be, and no bigger, and don't forget it, ever.
Johnny Caspar: That's right, Leo. You're the big shot around here, and I'm just some schook likes to get slapped around.

So many films, so little time...
The Coen brothers have made some great films, but Miller's Crossing has got to be the best. And Tom Reagan is definitely the most complex character they've ever created.
