Having just watched Segal's latest Exit Wounds and the absolutly appaling scene Where he catches some 'kids' breaking into his car and attacks them. When he fights the last guy and jumps back onto his wrist. Those that have seen it will know how bad it is :p

I just wondered what everyone's best and worst fight scene must be. I'm sure some peoples worst will be some peoples best.

Personally, I'd have to say

Worst - Mel Gibson vs Jet Li in Lethal Weapon 4
Yay, Mel gibson dislocates his shoulder again

Best - Jackie Chan vs An Entire Gang in Rumble in the Bronx :D
I hope next time we meet, it'll be drinking tea :D

Maybe not the worst, but probably the funniest...

They Live! (the one that takes about fifteen minutes!)

Kevin Harper
10-10-2001, 10:58
THE BEST: Fight between Sean Connery & Robert Shaw on the Orient Express in From Russia With Love.

THE WORST: Anything with Roger Moore......

Blade Runner

The really, really, really long one in They Live ;)

Its so funny :D :D

Two involvinh John Wayne:

"The Quiet Man" and the wonderful "Brannigan".

Hoffman versus Henney in "Straw Dogs" is pretty satisfying too.

Best: Take your pick from Robert De Niro's various bouts in Raging Bull. The baseball bat attack on Joe Pesci in Casino is also brutally realistic.

The fireside wrestling in Women in Love maybe

Best ever the fight is the one in Grosse Pointe Blank in the school corridor, it's just so brutal and real, no big flashy moves, just punching and kicking the crap out of each other.

Worst would be anything by fat Steven Seagal, early slimmer Steven Seagal was ok, especially that one with the pool ball wrapped up in a towel.

Best Fight: The Angel Face beating in Fight Club.

Worst Fight: Any of the absolutely laughable "fights" in Romeo Must Die. Probably the worst wire-work in the history of film.

And that They Live fight; what the hell is going on there? That one fight lasted longer than Frank Bruno's entire career in the ring.

"Duel of the Fates" scene in The Phantom Menace.

Big fight at the beginning of Blade.

Big fight at the end of Blade.

Ed Norton beating himself up in Fight Club.

Best: This is a tough one, but I think it has to be Jackie Chan vs Ken Lo in Drunken Master 2. Just count the number of consecutive kicks Lo delivers in it. Yowser !!!!

Worst: Cthulu Mansion, young rebel vs policeman, result: Policeman dies after being very very feebly kicked 3 times in the gut.

The fight sequence at the end of Iron Monkey is unbelievable on the wooden poles!

Also when the main guy in Shaolin Soccer takes on the gang with the football - a really excellent and to be fair, a really bizarre fight!

10-10-2001, 20:21
The swordfight between the Dread Pirate Roberts and um, the Spaniard [played by Mandy Potato?] in The Princess Bride.

Boink! :p

Excuse my spelling, but I have just spent 18 hours throwing up, for no reason that I can fathom…

Best - the pounding that Sonny gives Carlo in the Godfather (so real that 3 ribs were actually broken)

In second place, the scrap between Colin Firth & Hugh Grant in BJD - hilarious stuff.

Best fight:

Final fight between Jet Li and Billy Chow in Fist of Legend
Jet proves that the belt is mightier than the sword

Nothing springs to mind about the worst at the moment....

My favourite has got to be Denise Richards vs Neve Campbell in the swimming pool in Wild Things. Not so much for the fight but the way they make up afterwards.

Err...I'm just going to my room for 5 minutes...:D

Jason and the Argonaughts - Jason vs the skeletons. Hats off to Mr Harryhausen

I have to say one of my favourite fight scenes is in Mad Dog and Glory..... ......between Robert De Niro and Bill Murray. There's no elaborate moves or martial arts, just a realistic scrap between two angry blokes. I was desperate for De Niro to win.

I'd agree with the pole scene @ the end of Iron Monkey...Although saying that, numerous scenes through the film spring to mind...What a film!

As for the Shaolin Soccer scene you refer to...Not sure about best/worst, but certainly one of the most bizzarre!

As for the worst, I'd have to say The Jackie Chan film where he fights those three 'women' and is reluctant to hit them...Armour of God is it?
Not because the scene is particularly bad in terms of the fighting (or Jackies lack of), but the fact those 'women' frighten me to death! :D

The Wild Bunch vs 200 mexicans in The Wild Bunch

Worst:

Worst: most american MA flicks. End of Big Hit maybe. could have been v.good!

Best: in martial arts terms i'd go for both of JC vs Benny the Jet. Or Donnie Yen vs Michael Woods at end of ITLOD4. Or Lam Ching Ying vs Frankie Chan in Prodigal Son!

apart from HK action flicks, a great fight occurs in Brain Dead with the Vicar vs the Zombies!
"I Kick Arse For The Lord!"

Reviews for around 300 HK flicks at DDuk for those that are interested!

I can't believe nobodys mentioned "Drive" yet!

Some of the best fight choreography ever!

Especially the fight in the garage and the end fight in the resturaunt.

Mark Dacascos might bring a sort of cheesy channel 5 acting atmosphere with him, but when it comes to action scenes he's the best I've seen!

Alright easily the best fight is James Gandolfini vs. Patritia Arquette in True Romance. Lots of blood, lots of breaking stuff, very brutal and in the end Arquette shoots Gandolfini in the chest several times with a shot gun.

Kiss of the Dragon..Jet Li versus the 2 blonde guys

Bad...Romeo Must Die especially that end kick WTF  :suspect:

why is it, I read the title of a thread and think instantly of the best fight in cinematic history and the first person to reply to the thread beats me to it. I'm nearly half a year later than that, but still agree - 'They Live' best fight scene ever (and I love kung-fu films)

For the most part, I tend to use the search feature since it is easier than dvdtalk since you can do 3 letter words.
Maybe since I currently have a crush on Jennifer Garner, but I consiter Elektra vs. Daredevil in Daredevil to be an excellent fight.

Worst: The mass brawl at the start of Gangs Of New York.

Also like the Donnie Yen vs Jet Li fights in OUATIC2

Best - To be original, second to end fight in Butterfly and Sword with Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung.

Wicked music and absolutely mental swordplay and all sorts of things like extending spiraling sleeves and throwing darts etc...

Replayed 1000's of times!

Worst - Black Belt with Don 'The Dragon' Wilson in. What a load of cack. :oh-hum:

Summerisle
09-04-2003, 12:21
The worst:

Not one person has mentioned the Chuckster - yup Chuck Norris. Who can forget The Octagon fighting a mass of sleepwalking Ninja; or the climactic fight with David Carradine in Lone Wolf McQuad (of which Carradine quipped: "His actings as good as my martial arts"); or the irrepressible Professor in An Eye for An Eye.

Actually it's hard to know where to stop:lol:

Also all the American movies featuring Jet Li, damned awful camera work.:(

Best animated fight scene has got to go to Spike vs. Vincent in the Cowboy Bebop Movie

The train scene where Spike stuns Vincent, pushes him aside and then does a Bruce Lee "wind-up-before-the-monster" side kick really got the crow screaming. All that was missing was a "wataaaah!" from Spike :D

Didn't think it would be possible to direct and animate ground based kung-fu anime so fluidly and keep the character designs. I've seen others that were so obviously rotoscoped (like some scenes in the third animatrix), and the difference in animation style kind of detracts.

aaaanyway, probably sound like a :dork: by now. And I feel like I've posted this before. Deja Vu?

Another vote here for the awesome John Cusack vs. Benny the Jet fight in Grosse Point Blank. It's one of the swiftest fights you'll ever see, but it's also one of the most well executed - well, for an American movie anyway. Worst? Probably anything out of Romeo must Die. Jet Li's really having his talent wasted in Hollywood, isn't he?

NinjaBen

Too many great fight scenes too mention, but here are the good:

Prodigal Son - pretty much every fight scene in the film, but especially the one between Leung Yee Tai and the Prince.
Warriors Two - Leung Tsan Vs everyone in the restaurant when his leg is injured in a trap.
The Thundering Mantis - the final fight, absolute madness.
Drunken Master 2 - Jackie Vs the Kicker.
The Young Master - Jackie Vs the bad guy whose name i've forgotten. This has to be one of the longest 1-on-1 fights i can think of - a good 15 minutes.
Meals on Wheels - Benny Vs Jackie.
Police Story - Jackie Vs Thugs in the shopping mall.
The Shaolin Temple - Jet Li Vs the drunken Emperor.
OUATIC2 - Jet Li Vs Donnie Yen.
Way of the Dragon - Bruce Lee Vs Chuck Norris. The full version of this scene is mighty impressive.
Enter the Dragon - Bruce against all the guards in the dungeon.
The Phantom Menace - Duel of Fates. One of the better Western fight scenes, helped immensely by the music and sound of lightsabers. Let down a bit by some poor editing.
Drive - Marc Dacascos fight in hotel room and garage.
Big Trouble in Little China - Opening gang battle. Ok, it's not really great, but i like it!
Rob Roy - Liam Neeson Vs Tim Roth. One of the best fencing duels i've ever seen, very realistic.
The Princess Bride - Duel on the cliff top. The opposite end of the scale - complete fantasy fencing, but brilliantly choreographed nonetheless.

The Bad:

Have to agree with most and say Jet Li and Jackie's American films. It's not so much that the actual cheoreography is bad, rather the fact that they are just repeats of the fight scenes both guys have done before, except now they're older and the scenes seem slower and stale.
The Matrix - the dojo fight and most of the other fights except for the Morpheus fight in the bathroom. Extremely overrated, very unoriginal and poorly executed by the actors. Obviously those months of intense training did funk all.
Kickboxer, Double Impact - Double the Van Dammage? I think not.
Attack of the Clones - Yoda Vs Count Dooku. Errr. Was that even a fight?

The Ugly:

American Ninja 1, 2, and 3 - Just poor.

09-04-2003, 14:34
The Living Daylights - Milkman assissin vs Mi6 Security Guard, not bad seeing it wasnt the Main hero slugging it away with the main villain.

Family Guy - Peter vs The Chicken, and Officer Joe vs The Grinch-alike, on the roof of the orphanage.

Good Choice!

Ninja Ben - I think you were a bit harsh on most of those in your "the bad" section.

after all this time since my last post in this thread (page 1) - I still love JC v Benny the Jet

DM2 and FOL's come close. Interestingly, in FOL i prefer the fight between Jet and Chin Siu Ho than the finale.

as for Worst - I think Jet Li has hit a new low in Cradle 2 the Grave. Unimaginative choreography by Yuen Kuei and shocking camerawork and editing. my review was not glowing, to say the least.

Best
The end fight of "Who Am I" - Chan takes on 2 men for about 20mins, only thing I enjoyed in the movie.

Seagal in Out for Justice, one of the only action movies were the the good guy (seagal) beats the hell out of the bad guy (Dafoe) without resorting to the good guy getting knocked around a bit.

Worst
Jet Li in Romeo Must Die where he comically bounces of the wall thanks to some crap computer effect.

Iron Monkeys final on the pole ... didnt look good to me, just silly.

Ticker - I think Seagal was fighting at the end, the camera was filming his back though so it was hard to tell!

The best and most brutal fight sequence ever is the final climactic slugfest and dockside mayhem between Rod Taylor & William Smith in the 1970 film "Darker Than Amber". Most theatrical versions edited this final fight, but I have seen the full version on TV. It has to be seen to be believed.

Hmmm....far too many to choose from (as I've seen loads of action/kung fu movies) so I'll just pick a few at random (not definitive or anything).

Best

Jackie Chan vs Benny The Jet - Wheels on Meals

Donnie Yen vs Samo Hung - Sha Po Lang (one of the more impressive bouts in recent times from a action movie)

Jackie Chan vs Dick Wei - Heart of Dragon

Samo Hung Vs Yuen Wah - Eastern Condors

Stephen Chow Vs canon fodder and then Bruce Leung - Kung Fu Hustle

Tony Jaa in Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong

Worst

There was a thread recently with a scene from a Cynthia Rothrock movie:

 I think it must be the worst (or funniest) that I've seen.

The Jet Li fights in Danny the Dog were very good.

The one when they're in the toilet towards the end is absolutely brutal.

I like the Jackie Chan ladder fight in First Strike. Also good is Rumble in the Bronx, just about any of them :D

Some of the most brutal fight scenes I've watched recently are from Tom Yum Goong (soon to be released here as "Warrior King"). All the fights are brilliant. Haven't actually watched the "plot" yet :D. Also to a lesser extent Ong Bak.

For poor fights I'd nominate Thunderbolt with Jackie Chan. Made after he broke his ankle filming err his previous film (forgot the title). He does all the fist fighting while a double is used for jumps and kicks. I know its not a fight scene bt the race at the end is laughable as well. Poor movie all round.

Is this the thread that'll never die?

For worst cinematic fights I can recently recall: the Sean William Scott fight against Mister Funktastic in Bulletproof Monk was edited to absolute nonsense. Also, M:I:2, despite all the John Woo ingredients, the fight on the beach at the end was dire.

roadkill_88
21-05-2006, 23:01
Best = Tony Ja vs all - Ong Bak. It was to fight scenes what Bullitt was to chase scenes.

Worst? Any of this crap where men fly through the air like witches. Exit wounds, hero or whatever. I hate rubbish like that. Not even people in Tekken can do that sort of thing.

Also, M:I:2, despite all the John Woo ingredients, the fight on the beach at the end was dire.

Next time you watch M:I:2 (if you ever do again), pay attention to the tyres on the motorbikes. I.e., how they mysteriously change from road slicks to giant dirt tyres depending on terrain.

The fight over the lake in Hero was just breathtaking. I know it's impossible - but that's part of the magic of movies, no? Also the fight between Donnie Yen and Jet Li in the courtyard is stunningly beautiful.

I've always thought the fight between Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang was exceptional - it's shot as well as it's choregraphed. Only bettered, for sheer fun, by the daddy of sword-fights, the one between Errol Flynn v Basil Rathbone in The Adventures of Robin Hood. :notworthy

Maybe not the worst, but probably the funniest...

They Live! (the one that takes about fifteen minutes!)

Funniest Fight Scene?

I would say Jack Burton and Wang Chi in Big Trouble in Little China, as they try to escape the clutches of the Wing Kong henchmen. Jack craps his pants as he and Wang are outnumbered. He flings away his knife from its holster in sheer panic. By the time he's found it and returns to the scene of the fight, Wang has already skillfully dispatched the bad guys, much to Jack's astonishment (embarassment). :D

not exactly a movie but the scrap between Ian Anthony Dale and Jay R. Ferguson in SURFACE (tv show) on top of the carpark was pretty good stuff

Roy Schrider vs that Assassin in The Maraphon Man

Jackie Chan vs numerous bad guys with steel pipes in the playground in Police Story 1
