Brought this up because of the impending bans for Arsenal, now I am not trying to bash The Arse as it were:suspect: it just brought up something interesting.

With teams playing vastly different players in different competition would it not be better for suspensions to be served in the competition for which the suspension has occurred.

So if a reserve team player gets sent off in the Carling Cup he should serve a ban in that competition so he is punished accordingly, wherby at the moment he may get a ban for Prem matches that he is not going to play in anyway.

The other way round players get a ban from playing in the Prem but at the moment (if the timing is right!) they my serve part of that ban in a game (Carling cup) that they were never likely to play in anyway thus making such a suspension more lenient.

Would prevent situation such as Campbell missing the FA Cup final because of something he did in the Prem.

Any thoughts - just seems fairer that's all.

Not so sure about that-picture this one-United are losing 2-0 in the cup to Liverpool with five minutes to go.Roy Keane decides to commit a horrendous late challenge on Michael Owen, damaging his cruciate ligament and putting him out for the rest of the season.Roy gets a straight red-however,because he will only be banned in a competition his team has been knocked out of,he plays against Liverpool in the league two weeks later and scores the winner-in effect he commits an act of violent conduct and goes unpunished.

Like almost everything, rules can be manipulated/abused, but I agree with MadStu. I think the suspension should be restricted to the competition it was earned in.

Also don't forget the Champions League, that domestic suspensions don't affect it and vice versa. E.g. when Vieira is fit or coming back to fitness, he is much more likely to be risked in Europe than he is at home. As well, there are the odd/unclear rules regarding suspensions from internationals.

Owen is perfectly capable of damaging his own cruciate ligament.

And United losing 2-0 to scousepool? More like United winning 4-0.
