View Full Version : [GC] Mario Kart: DD - SPECIAL CUP TT CHALLENGE (See end of First Post)
A lot of people feel Nintendo haven't done Mario Kart justice since the SNES version - and I for one believe them. However, if you've got Mario Kart stick it in your cube and select time trial mode. Pick a course and see what you can do - if you can beat one of these times you're on the leaderboard. It's that simple!
As you can see there are many unfilled spots so even the crappiest of times will get on the board at the moment.
Believe me when I say once you've got into this time trial competition you won't put Mario Kart down. I was disapointed after playing it for the first couple of days - now I've clocked up at least 100+ hours playing it  So fire up that Cube and get involved. Trust me, you'll regret it! ;)

<CENTER>This weekends challenge</CENTER>
This weeks challenge, something slightly different. As there's a couple of gaps for all 4 special cup courses I want to see some times on these. So I'm looking for a sub 2'20 on Wario Colosseum, a sub 2'00 on Dino Dino Jungle, a sub 2'40 on Bowser Castle and a sub 3'15 on Rainbow Road. There should be enough variety there to keep you happy :D
This better not be as easy as the N64 version.

Dunno if this has been discussed in other threads, but I played a a demo of MK in GAME yesterday. I presume its an early version but i was very impressed, definitly gonna get it!

The game is finished, so you may well have been playing the real deal...
All I can say is I'm praying Rainbow Road appears in a hidden 'Special Cup' they've not told us about.
I'm sure I've seen Rainbow Road in various screenshots

Nintendo will be shooting themselves somewhere more painful than the foot if it doesn't...

if you get gold in 50cc, 100cc and 150cc championships for each of the three standard cups, Special Cup will open up, which contains 4 new courses including Rainbow Road.
We played it quite a lot yesterday (what halloween party?) It took us about 4 hours to get gold in the everything apart from the 100cc/150xcc Special Cup.

Is Rainbow Road anygood? The N64 sucked balls really badly. The GBA one was OK, but I love the SNES one.

The N64 one was longer than the M25, unless you knew the shortcut

That's fair enough IMHO.
I doubt any game EVER will be played as much as the original SNES version by me. I still play the bloody thing today FFS!!
In my opinion, it's not a better game than the original Super Mario Kart, but it is the closest anyone's ever come, and one of the finest pieces of electronic entertainment ever developed.
TBH, I wasn't expecting it to be better than the SNES version, although IMHO Diddy Kong Racing has come closest to taking SMKs crown of kart racers. It'll be interesting to compare the 2.

I recommend that you do! I check it out several times a day. The reviews and articles are always spot on and are well written. Its a very UK focused site and offers fairly speedy up to date news items as well.

If it was from LX I think you have just orderd "Mario Kart" which is a GBA SP game & not "Mario Kart: Double DASH!!" which is a gamecube game.

I can only presume that the Post Office is having great trouble delivering the larger (ie. bigger than letters) mail as all I have had recently is letters and junkmail.
I'm not a happy person at all.

Just had an hour or so playing single player and 2-player GP vs the Missus. :D (Bolch won't get here til about 9pm tonight  ). Got through 50 cc Mushroom and Flower ups so far. Pretty easy as you would expect 50cc to be.
Hugely enjoyable is my view so far.
The game is mariokart in every sense of the word. It plays as you would expect a MK game to play. Handling is responsive with the Wavebirds I use and all the familiar weapons/powerups and characters are there.
Not sure what the 2 player in a Kart does to the gameplay still though in terms of strategy but the animations are hilarious.
Graphically and sonically it mirrors the syle of Mario Sunshine with the whole theme of the presentation etc being based around the antics of Delfino Island. Some would say this is not good enough, but I like the consistency of it all. I only played full screen and 2 player split screen and noticed no discernable drop in the graphics or frame rate when doing so. Haven't tried 4 player yet.
The tracks are varied and fun to play. I've always preferred the simpler tracks of past MK games and there are a few good ones here. There is a homage to Mario Sunshine, Mario 64 as well as the old Bowser dirt track from MK64 where HUGE jumps are the order of the day. I haven't been able to exploit any of the shortcuts yet but I have seen several alternative routes on all the tracks.
One thing that the MK series never ever had was a race replay and as far as I can see it's the same here. :( I can understand why - there is so much going on in each race with weapons being fired off all over the place it would have been very difficult to implement, but it is also because of these crazy races where anything can (and does) happen that it would have been nice to look back at a race to take the **** out of your opponents :D
I have the Japanese version which has Jap menus but they are all pretty standard options and very similar to past incarnations so no problems with the menus.
Out for the PAL market on Friday 14th. Go get it.

The warp pipe project is now starting to test the Jap Mario Kart using the broadband adaptor and their software.

I may keep hold of the Jap version then even when my USA version turns up.
Anyway, played 4 player split screen just now and it retains all speed and most of the detail. Far more so than F-Zero GX does so another
Also the Battle game is now much more similar to the original SNES version and is also a barrel of laughs. Shame they took out the jump function so have to use green shells or banana skins to counteract those dreaded red shells. :D

Heh :)
Just found out on NTSC that if you beat the recommended times for each course (go to Courses at the Mariokart Homepage (http://www.mariokart.com/launch/home.html)) on Time Trial Mode you unlock ghosts of the MK staff times meaning you get to race against the developers.
I'm still in about 1 second off the recommended time on Luigi Circuit but once I learn how to do corner boosts I'll be in there!!
Managed to unlock a few new Karts so far from winning GP modes.
Oh, and the Battle mode is brilliant! Reminds me of the SNES version more than the N64 version and the top 4 player fun in Ono's household this weekend. :)

I remember getting blisters from the SNES version cutting milliseconds off my times. At one stage I swore I had the fastest times in the world on Mario Circuit 1 - until I saw some of the Jap scores
Anyway, Luigi Circuit is the course I've been trying.
Best times (off the top of my head) are about:
1min30 for race
29 sec best lap.
Some of the guys at NTSC UK beat that easily though. :(

"It is flawed, despite exercising the highest standards for the most part, and now, after so much backchat from my journo chums, even I'm starting to question if it couldn't do with an extra burst of speed. With more battle tracks, a few more actual racetracks and four-player Grand Prix mode - and let us not forget Internet play, for those of us who will never have all the equipment to make use that tantalising LAN mode - Double Dash would almost certainly qualify for the top score. As it is, at times it's a hair's breadth away, and you're doing yourself a massive disservice if you don't race out and buy this the second it's available."

Mario Kart 64 runs at sub-30 frames per second in single-player. Double Dash runs at 60.
Mario Kart 64 runs around 15 frames per second in four-player. Double Dash runs at 60.

I thought speed wise it was alright. The main selling point though is the sheer number of tracks and the elusive triple star rating on all courses.
In terms of content GBA MK is king. Was hoping for some kind of coin collecting, rank checking on this like the GBA but it appears not to be there.

It's LAN only according to the manual - it was out in Virgin Piccadilly Circus.
About to play but only have 2 pads - the manual seems to suggest that you can have 4 player individual races, 4 people playing Grand Prix in co-operative mode (2 karts, 4 characters) but no 4 player spilt screen Grand Prix.
Is this definitely the case? :oh-hum:
Well staffords game shops all sold early, cheapest was £34.99 from a place called discs and disks, but one thing of intrest was the gamestation's ones were in Gold Slip Cases with mario and luigi (i think on the front) not sure if these are limited to gamestations tho. I think they were 37.99 or 38.99 in there
You can have 3 or 4 player split screen races.
These races only have the 3 or 4 human teams on and no cpu players.
You can have 2 player FULL GP mode though.
As for online play there has already been mention on this thread regarding some unofficial tunnelling software being worked on to go with the BB modem.

Every week we compare our top chart titles against other Web sites to ensure we continue to bring you great prices as well as the convenience of buying Online. For this reason there may be differences between prices on this site to those in our store chain, where the strategy is to price competitively in the local market. In instances where our Online price is lower than in one of our stores, that store is not able to match the Online price.
I guess it doesn't work then :(
damn, im sure i read somewhere that the price match works.
just been playing this and is very good indeed :) not playe dmulti player as of yet, just the 50cc, brings back alot of fun memories hehe.
shame the power slide hasnt got a jump function, im always looking for the jump when powersliding, guess its a habit,
also the turbo boost at the lights is still there (got to time it right), very cool :) aswell as the shooting back wards the weapons (hold back and release weapon for it to get sent behind)

I presume you're running it on a US cube with freeloader 1.4?
Not sure what to suggest really as you've opened the game now so gamestation won't take it back unless of course they have 30 day (?) guarantee like Game does...
Other option is to pick up Action Replay with freeloader built in (and allows you to input codes for future games that try to stop it working) and flog the 1.4..

no problems as yet, will let ya know if i experience any.
Excellent game but found it a little easy so far. Really enjoyed it on the GBA and N64 and so far it looks like they have got it spot on.
Bought a PAL cube in the end, took my game back and sawpped it for the MK pack which included the extra Zelda disc and a nice gold box to put the game into :)

It gets far more challenging on 100cc and 150cc - some would say to the point of feeling cheated.
Persevere though and you'll unlock some nice things.:)
As for the Gold Box - do you mean a gold slipcase?

It's annoying the way that the same computer controlled karts finish in pretty much the same order every race. If you finish 1st in 3 races and have a mare in another you can almost guarantee that the kart that finished 2nd behind you in the 3 you won will win the other one.
I think that makes sense :)
Yeah, that's my only complaint about the game - but isn't that like in,say, real life motor racing where you are bound to have on team better than the others?
The problem is less if you have 2 human players though cos the other player normally throws a spanner in the works. :D
i was looking forward to a similar battle stage as Mk64, where you have 3 levels on each of the blocks, now that was a cracking stage!
i think the battle stages in MK:DD arent all that:| quite small, no where to hide:suspect:

Yeah it's getting harder now, had real trouble on some of the later stages even on 50cc.
Yeah the gold box is the slip case.

Is this game as good as the SNES version?
I have read the review over at ign and it makes the game sound pretty average and nowhere near as good as the original :(

IGN reviews are rubbish, try Eurogame for reviews
I got MK: DD and it's very very good
You can't really compare it to the SNES version.
I doubt any game EVER will be as good as that!
It's can be compared to the N64 version though and I think it is much much better.
I'm trying to win golds on all GPs at the moment to unlokc the secret tracks and cars. The new cars in particular are needed to get good Time Trial scores.

That's pretty much what happened in the SNES version. Less so on the N64 because of the ridiculous power-ups.

So how does time trial work if there's no records, or is that something unique freeloader has done?
Mutiplayer battle modes are pretty crap, which is dissapointing and mostly helped by the shocking stages.
'Flat' look of the courses is a bit lame too..

No records?
Mine has records for all courses. Nice fast times populate them too.
You can also save mulitple ghosts to race against later on every course and if you beat the suggested times (see the official website) you unlock the staff ghosts where you can race against dev team times.

Are the lap times affected by whether the game is US/JAP or PAL and whether the game is in 50 or 60Hz mode btw?
PS. I'm not using those reasons as an excuse as to why Ono is over 2 secs faster than me ;)
I'm not sure about that bit mate. I don't it's got anything to do with it. Just my skill :D

I don't think it takes up any extra memory. I've unlocked at least half of the settings, and it's not using up any extra. You only need the extra mem for storing ghosts

You do realise you can save UK games on US memory cards don't ya? ;) (not JAP formatted mem cards though :nono: ) As for the space you'll need & your query about Ono's comment above, you need 3 blocks for saving all your records/unlocked vehicles etc. If you want to save a "ghost" of your best time trial times for a particular course that takes up 5 blocks for each course you want to save.

I'm assuming from your original post, that you thought when you progress through the game and unlock other cars (plus other things ;)), you'll need more memory to store it. And I said I don't think it takes up any more, 'cos I've unlocked everything up until 150cc on Star and Special cups, and it's not taken up any more. Thus I don't think you need to worry about it.
But then reading morleyian I've now realised you probably don't have a PAL mem card (which I assumed you did) which is why you made your comment. :brickwall

When I first got MK I only played it for a little while, and didn't get into it much. Now I've had another go with it, and it does reign supreme, and back to the old-skool style of "cheating bleeps, how do they get 10 red shells in a row???". Classic stuff.

Just finished the special cup on 100cc. On to 150cc tonight. I always play with Koopa in the back cos I love the little wave he gives you if you press fire with no weapons armed :)
Chris
Is anyone finding that certain character's weapons come up more often than others? With Baby Mario, I've never once got the ball & chain thing, with Baby Luigi I'll get it maybe once or twice a Grand Prix. With Birdo and Yoshi though, I get their eggs 3 or 4 times a race. With Bowser & mini Bowser I get their shells about 2-3 times a race, as with Wario's bombs. Very very inconsistent :oh-hum:
Still good fun though :D I play with Yoshi and Birdo now 'cos their egg is just the best and means no-one can get in front of me. Except in 150cc they (the others) pull an awful lot of blue shells from somewhere

Unfortunately not :( I haven't even got the sound set up properly I've been playing it too much  The composite out and sound is plugged directly into the projector... from a distance the picture looks fine but you can see the poor quality when you go up close :(
Jay - it makes the projector courtesy of the bargain forums *so* worthwhile! And yeah I do find that certain character's items come up much more often... I'm practically an exclusive heavyweight player and with Wario and Bowser (on the back), I often get maybe 5 huge-green-shells per race.
And Bolch... a time trials page would be great :D

I've put a basic table up on the first post. If this really takes off I'll do another page which will allow you to update your times yourself, although it'll be on another site it'll still be referenced via this page with regular updates.

Don`t think its different for different characters. I have noticed that the game seems much harder with certain combinations of characters and Karts (more so than you might expect). The best combination I have found is Koopa and Baby mario in the green pram thing. HTH

The only game I was actually ever jealous of when I had my mega drive was mario kart, and this is the first version I have ever owned and I have to say i really like it and seem to be progressing well and have won the four cups to 100cc and the first two of them at 150cc.
It is isn't perfect as it can be annoying when you are leading then suddenly that blue shell comes (is there anyway of stopping it like the other shells,) and then you are hit by another shell, then you are turned small (usually when going up hill) so first has been lost and you are now fifth???
And the computer seems to get there special more times that I do (well it seems that way) the amount of times I have seen that ginat banana and shell!
It does seem that all the players are ganging up on you, but it does make it a challenge don't want it being too easy.
I have had it since thrusday and I have only been Wa-Luigi (as he was my character on mario tennis) and daisy in the wa-luigi cart, is there a real advantage in having a heavy and a light class character that the computer seems to favour, this is more of a question for multiplayer.
Updated the times for Luigi Circuit and Baby Park, will do the rest when I get back from picking up Wedding Photos.
EDIT - Put the rest of morleyian's times in and added the (crap) few I'd done.

do you get anything for getting 40 points in all GPs? just curious as to whether i should get tied up in getting PERFECTION or just settle for 36 :dork:
and you can't hold sheles behind you in defence

Just completed it, ie got golds in all modes (50, 100, 150, mirrored) on all cups (flower, mushroom, star, special, all star)
What combination were you using? I've tried about 5 times now for Gold on 150cc All Star, but I can't believe how much the game cheats. I can get to the lead, and all the way to the end, but it always blows me up somehow right before the finish line causing me to drop to position 5 with no time to catch up

Ok guys, whats the strategy for luigi circuit. All the shortcuts seem longer, as does the curved bank. Just stay low in the turns and cut across the hills?
Chris
Luigi Circuit?
I never go up for the boosts on the banks and haven't used the shortcut yet.
Best go with a Kart with high top speed as there are a few long straights.

heres my first couple!
peach beach - 1.32.048 - Koopa & super koopa - koopa kart
dry dry desert - 2.12.272 - koopa & super koopa - koopa kart
I thank you!
Has anyone seen the 'shortcut' on Peach Beach? At the first corner, take the road on the left instead of turning right. Possibly the best shortcut in the whole game
