Looks like I'll have to unlock Toad and the Barrel Train before I have a crack at beating some of them though :) I've finished the first three on 50CC level, just need to do the rest. It's so easy to pick up, I'm already powersliding round corners like there's no tomorrow :p

On another note: I'm so glad I bought my Gamecube! It's been ages since I've actually played a game and had fun... After all, isn't that what games should be about? Sure, it's nice to play an atmospheric, heart-pounding FPS once in a while- but it's as though that's what every game is like nowadays. Can't wait till I get a few more controllers though- and once I get Bomberman, Super Monkey Ball and Mario Party, I have a feeling Pro Evo 3 will start to gather a fair amount of dust (not that I play it, I hate the damn thing :gag: ).

As for TT, Barrel Train is the one you're after, characters don't make a difference unless of course you were referring to the Toad Kart. Powersliding is useful yes but pulling off those mini turbos on the straights is your next aim. Trust me, in time you're gonna be using them like :nuts: When you first start on the TT as I've said many times before, you WILL be a long time behind us but remember, we were all there once (check earlier on in the thread). It'll take time but keep practicing and practicing and those times will come down gradually :)

PS. Bolch my session this evening was rather unsuccessful so it's not worth posting the odd 0.1 improvement (3-lap) and FL here and there for now. DDJ I spent most of my time on and that zipper section did make me :brickwall quite a few times to say the least :mad: There's always tomorrow.......

That's exactly it, the mini turbos (wiggle left and right while powersliding to get a blue flame) can be done on straight stretchs. All it takes is practice. Have a look at some of these movies (http://matthijsiscool.free.fr/MKDD/). Bear in mind no one on these forums is that quick (yet :p) but it'll give you an idea how much the mini turbos make a difference.

I'd go with Mario and Koopa/Paratrooper for their weapons. If you're having problems dive on Time Trial for an hour or 2. As you drive around those courses on TT mode you'll see where you can save time on the course by cutting corners, using mushrooms in different places, staying tight on bends etc. Then you'll find you'll probably fly through it.

That'll take you to a yahoo page, click post on the left hand side. Log in and then put your times in stating name, country and NTSC/PAL(50)/PAL(60) :thumbs:

I'm getting the hang of it now- all that sliding and stuff. I'm just practicing for the Star Cup and had one go on Yoshi Circuit on time trial- it's a crap time compared to all you uber-karters, but I realised it was good enough to get 10th place on the leaderboard! :lol:

Did you notice the shortcut just after the start (after the right turn and left turn)? Using a mushroom over the gap will save you a second or 2 on your lap time (do it for 2 laps ;) )

I think you need to get gold at 150cc on the Star cup (or was it the special cup...?). It's one of them, anyway.

I still haven't unlocked it :( All I want to do is get the bloody barrel train so I can practice the courses and hopefully get into the boards! I haven't really tried beating the Star Cup on 100cc/150cc yet, it's just so damn frustrating! You can be leading right until the end and then a few shells hit you and you're out :eek: You also need to win at least two of the races, and come at least 2nd in the other two- as there's always a pair of cpu characters who'll be the best out of the lot!

It's a fun game though, I've been playing multiplayer and it's a laugh :D

You have to press the button exactly as the light turns green. An easier way of doing it is to watch Lakitu (is that his name? It's the guy in the cloud anyway!), and press the button when he puts his hand down for the forth time.

Im glad someone setup a Time Trial record because the single player is way too easy. I managed to unlock the Barrel Cart on the first go. Had a quick go on Time Trial and managed to get my worst score to date, I was hoping for something faster! :lol:

is there some trick Im missing, my times are falling way short of just taking corners sharper.

Goblin - I've stuck your PB time on the board and for your DDD time I've assumed you used the same characters.

To get good times you need to stay tight on the corners and mini turbo (page 8 of the instructions IIRC) like mad! If you're haviong problems pulling off the super start then try tapping A 2/3 times as the light goes green. One of them is bound to be right ;)

Paul - In the absence of the Barrel Train I'd heavily recommend the Bullet Blaster (unlocked by doing 50cc Special Cup). It doesn't handle that differently (corners can't be as tight) but it was my kart of choice before the Barrel Train. Use that on TTs for a bit then go back to the GP, you'll surprise yourself!

Just got this yesterday.

Done some Time Trials on Luigi Circuit and Baby Park (Fastest Lap i`ve gotten so far is around 9.9 seconds). Bought NGC magazine today to see Other Peoples times on time trial and it looks like it`ll take me years to get anywhere near them (Eg - 1:06:593 for Baby Park).

I had a go before and straight away I finished 100cc on the Star Cup with 40pts! I can't believe what I'd been doing wrong before... :confused: Maybe it's because of my new Wavebird :D

Anyhow, 50cc on the Special Cup was a complete joke- so I have the Bullet Car now! You can really tell the difference with it though, it's by far the best out of the ones I have so far. Straight away I knocked over 5 seconds off one of my times- and even then it was a bit of a crap race. I'm confident I'll have the bullet train soon, as using this on the Star Cup @ 150cc will make a helluva difference :thumbs:

Tip for both courses (just in case you hadn't noticed already)

MC: use your mushrooms over the grass where the big chomper guy is. through the trees and around the grass keeping as fine as possible)
PB: use mushrooms over grass once more just after start/finish line. first chance of going behind one of the trees so it and mushroom it once and again finishing back on the track, avoid stopping on the grass as that will slow you down obviously

Not very good, but it's only the second time I've recorded- so I'm sure I could get it down with a few goes. That Rainbow Road though, how annoying! Many a time have I gone through the whole course and fallen off on the last corner of lap 3 :lol: :brickwall Any tips for this level, btw? Where is best to use the mushrooms- and do you know if I can download a time trial video of it anywhere?

Yes, I still don't have the elusive Bullet Train. I haven't actually been playing Mario kart recently, but I had a few goes of the Star Cup @ 150cc (again :( ) the other day and it drove me mad. The amount of shells that can just come out of nowhere and hit your kart (completely destroying any chance you might have of winning the race) is, quite simply, very annoying :(

:D You and Xeon certainly are having your own RR TT battle :thumbs: I must say, that's not the ideal TT course. In fact I would go so far as to say it's the worst! Too long and too many chances to fall off :help: Get on Peach Beach, that's a good one - a bend, a long straight to do multiple boosts and 1 bend. Piece of urine (can't say the other word 'cos I think it's banned from these forums :nuts: )

That's true! Rainbow Road is a nightmare- but I was only racing on it because there was an empty space on the table :lol: I'd never played Peach Beath in TT mode until you suggested it- but you're right in that it's pretty easy. I got this time for now:

Where you using your shrooms? Best is to use them both after the 'S' bend, behind the palm tree (IIRC) and onto the right hand path of the quicksand pit (next to the large arrow sign).

I know it sounds a cop out blaming my tools but for some reason the mt's arn't coming off quite like they used to. I broke my Orange pad about 4 weeks ago so moved onto the purple one which was great to start with but now the R button isn't working too well and I can't train myself to use L as the mt button :(

Moved onto the Platinum pad last night and I've started getting around the course with that ok but the mt's have been quite elusive and often don't work (but work fine with the purple pad :searchme: )

Just about to try my black one now. It this rate I might buy a screwdriver for the range pad and try fixing it :nuts:

I haven't played Mario Kart much recently I'm afraid (partly because a little game called Metroid Prime) :D

You guys are far too good though :( If I bought the game when it was released I'd have stuck to it, as we'd have started at the same level. I've missed out on 5 or 6 months of hardcore Mario Kart thrashing- and that's quite a lot! It'll take me ages to get anywhere near as good as you lot :p 'Tis a shame, because I'd have loved to partake in the scoreboards properly, as I do like the game a lot.

Still room for improvement, really do think it's just a matter of time before I break into the 1'50s and after that, who knows?

EDIT: Was soooo scared in that race, used the SC for laps 2 and 3. Whilst in the air on lap 2 I paused the game 'cos I knew I had to relax, lap 1 was where I'd made most of my time up so I had quite a lead and that's never a good thing too early on in the 3-lap race :) Certainly is a mystery why it's easier to perform when you're behind than in front :nuts:

In true "last to join the party" style, I finally succumbed and bought a GC yesterday. DD is great fun - brings back memories of drunken 4 way battles on MK64 when I shared a house with 3 friends :thumbs:

Unfortunately I now live on my own, so I'm going to have to content myself with the time trialling :D (although I've still got half the 100cc cup and all the 150cc + unlockable cups to go yet :))

From a post a few pages back, Paul - In the absence of the Barrel Train I'd heavily recommend the Bullet Blaster (unlocked by doing 50cc Special Cup). It doesn't handle that differently (corners can't be as tight) but it was my kart of choice before the Barrel Train. Use that on TTs for a bit then go back to the GP, you'll surprise yourself!

IMHO use...
Bullet Blaster (Second only to the Barrel Train!)
Toad or Toadette (Golden Mushroom + Triple Mushrooms when used with...)
Koopa or Paratrooper (Triple Shells)

This may seem like a waste of time but try going onto Time trial and working on the 4 courses for a particular cup. As you race around by yourself you'll find you can shave loads of seconds off your time just by using L/R to slide around the corners (remember to cut into the corner as tight as possible). Once you see your best times dropping like that go back onto GP mode using the 'stategy' you've been using on the TT race. You should see a big improvement on your current GP race.

Also when you get a shell and you're in the lead don't waste it and fire ir backwards. Keep it and only fire it backwards at the last second before you get hit by shell from behind. (Or even fire it forwards if a shell is coming at you from the front and you can't avoid it)

Well yeah, I have done :confused: Got gold in 50 & 100 cc 3 cups, only got 4 karts out of it though - Waluigi racer, paratroopa's kart, a different pram one and Luigi's green one.

No courses or cups unlocked yet.

Unlocking the Barrel Train is a pain in the arse (well it was for me, as I have zero patience when it comes to games :lol: ), but just make sure you save your power ups for when you need them and you'll scrape through. You should definitely practice the courses in TT mode as well. But hey, I'm crap at Double Dash, so what do I know :searchme: :lol:

I'm itching to play this game again now, after ignoring it for about 2 months :nuts: I'm hooked on Metroid Prime at the moment though, but I think I'll find some time to fit it in. I'll try and get into the Top 10 for other tracks I haven't tried yet :thumbs:

Boy am I confused :thinking: Sure I got a 29'495 lap (IIRC, remember checking where that would place me on the PP and those names at 42nd and 43rd ring bells) on MC last night but I thought I would leave it 'til I had another PR or 2 before submitting here/on the player page. Started up my game today and it tells me my best lap is 29'638 :brickwall What's goin' on?! Am I totally losing it? :nuts: Gonna have to try and recreate that moment to convince myself I'm not.
