View Full Version : riiiiight.. this is for all you film addicts out there
ok, name this film.. coz it's be bugging me for ages and i can't find it on imdb.
right, it's a australian/new zealand film.. first saw it about 5 years ago on BBC2 (but i missed the end of it). It was about everyone in the world just like, disappearing for some reason.. apart from a few group of people who just happened to be going through a near-death experience just as everyone disappeared. Anyway, i remember one of the group (a bloke).. going insane with the fact that he was alone in the world and ending up running around a church wearing a nightie and carrying a shotgun. um, yeah, i know.. weird film. :D
so er... any ideas? For some reason i always thought it was called The Day The Earth Caught Fire... but that's another different film entirely, apparantly.
cheers, Sneeka
I remember this!!! But it was more than 5 years ago, more like ten. I really can't remeber the name through.

What a wicked question - I remember this film but not what it is called - any ideas who was in it?
Good film though.
Did it have a bit where the bloke drove a JCB into a petrol station?
I think i remember it, was there a bank vault too?.
I had the same feeling a while back and spent 2 days searching imdb until eventually i found the film. All I could search on was the words 'butler' and 'island' and 'ship'.
Imagine the amount of results from comments, reviews, characters.. anyway the film was 'the admirable crichton'. I was so chuffed to find it couldn't wait to see it, but then found out its discontinued:( .
Hope the film your thinking of is available still, if you want to relive some nostalgia.

Criterion - are you listening !!!!!!!!!!!
Great Geoff Murphey film with Bruno Lawrence - Film Four show this sometimes, usually as part of a NZ film season, along with UTU, Goodbye Porkpie, Smash Palace etc.

I'd love to see this again, I really enjoyed it when I saw it on TV a few years ago. I guess it's probably the same showing that Sneeka remembers and if that's the case it's probably at least Ten years ago (although I admit that repeat showings have probably passed me by :p). I keep checking Ezydvd for signs every so often but there's no sign of it yet.
Anyone know of any decent NZ film sites?
Probably not what you're looking for, but the NZ Film Commission have a site. Can't remember the URL, though. Helpful, isn't it?
It sounds really interesting so I went to IMDB to chck it out and read the first comment and it has a huge spoiler in it... Why do people insist on spoiling movies for others??? :(

Summary: A superior "Last person alive" film.
There have been very few "Last person alive" films made. The only other one I can think of is "The World, the Flesh and The Devil" (1959). This film is, in many ways, a remake. It has, at first, one man alone, trying to find out what has happened to the rest of the planet. Then, he is joined by a female, before another man turns up, and they fight over the female.
The film is very good, and deals with the characters well, especially Zac's insanity in the middle of the film. However, the film is a little open ended. It attempts to provide an explanation as to what happened, and the ending scene, when Zac blows up the research lab doesn't properly provide an explanation as to what happened. Is he in heaven, or has he too been transported to wherever the rest of the planet went?
However, overall, a good film worth a look.
www.nzfilm.co.nz. Seems to have basic info on most NZ films. Click on NZFC Films link at the top, then select the Film Catalogue option in the middle of the page.
