View Full Version : Anchor Bay Withnail and I
This is looking better than the Criterion Version here's the details taken from www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com. (sorry if it's been posted before!)
"Anchor Bay have announced the specs for the forthcoming Withnail and I and a Criterion beater could well be on the way.
No mention is made of the video specs, so we don't know if this release will be anamorphic, but it will be gaining a 5.1 track in place of the Criterion's Mono.
Extras are set to include the "Withnail and Us" documentary and a set of Ralph Steadman photographs as well as an all new commentary (recorded for this release) from Paul McGann (I) and Ralph Brown (Danny). The disc will street on November 12th for £19.99."

I also think it's a safe bet the DVD will be offering biographies/filmographies, since they e-mailed me for permission to use the one of Bruce Robinson that I originally wrote for the IMDB about six years ago.
Which of course means I'll have to buy the DVD, even though I've got the Criterion one - I've never had my name on a DVD before! :D
Will you be selling signed copies in the Classified Adverts Forum Michael ;) ?

Shame there's no Richard E Grant on the commentary though.

Or Bruce Robinson, Richard Griffiths, Michael Elphick or even George Harrison....

The splendid array of extra features on the disc are accesed via menus designed by Ralph Steadman and include a fantastic gallery of photographs by Steadman of Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann larking around ‘in character' in the grotty bathroom of the Camden house before shooting began. A brilliant documentary, ‘Withnail and Us' (made in 1999) featuring writer/director Bruce Robinson talking about his debut feature, Bruce's former flatmates with whom he shared the Withnail lifestyle while writing the film, the casting director recounting the hilarious auditions for the film, and of course the stars including Ralph Brown without his ‘aerials' ("All hairdressers are in the employment of the government...") The ‘real Withnail' and the source of the name are discussed and fans of the film tell us exactly why it's their favourite film of all time. If you don't know already you'll discover the secret of Richard E. Grant's superb portrayal of the permanently drunk/stoned Withnail... and it's not what you would think! Paul McGann and Ralph Brown recall the ups and downs shooting the film in a hilarious and insightful new commentary which has been recorded especially for the UK release.
+ 16x9 enhanced!!!

Now that is really looking good.
Looks like it's one to re-order, I'm typically peeved after purchasing the Criterion one, but it's such a great film I think it has to be done.

I love that Anchor Bay cover!
That was one of the original UK posters and the Cannon video release. They just stuck their badge on it. That's how all DVD covers should be.
Nice and plain.

Anyone who owns this got an opinion on it or reviewed it?
Is it better than the criterion - any comparisons yet?
Cheers.
