I'm looking to get into the world of effects for my Jackson electric guitar. Would you recommend starting with single effects boxes like the Boss foot pedals or go for a multi-effects unit. Now when it comes to the multi effects units I havent a clue where to start so what should I look out for? Are there any good units you use or know of?

I've got a Boss GT-3 and its great - wouldn't buy seperates for the world. The GT-6 is also really good, as are the Line 6 units, although they are more marketed towards good distortion sounds.

GT-6 is the big player just now. You can get it around £319 from the internet (www.guitarampkeyboard.com). £399 in my local shop!!!
I've already got separate distortion and wahwah but am considering this unit.
get hold of something second hand if you don't know what you are looking for.
All in one units are good, but if you don't have a clue, it may be better to get a few single pedals. (don't worry, most of the best guitarists in the world still use single pedals) Multiple pedal baords can be a bit confusing if you are new to it. Whereas single pedals allow an easier route in.
Check out the sound on sound classified board www.sospubs.co.uk for some cheap gear.
I got my Korg AX1500g pedal board for £80 from there and it looks like it's never been used.

I would say my budget is going to be around £200 max if I were to get a multi fx unit if that is any help. On the GT-3 and GT-6 what range of effects do you get for your dosh? I notice there seem to be a number of different Line 6 units, what is the difference between each one?

Nope just for my bedroom :D Can someone explain more about the GT-6 what features it has etc.
if its just for bedroom playing what about the line6 guitar port. You plug it into your computer, then plug your guitar into the little box and the computer does the rest. The upshot of which is that you can make your guitar sound like any other guitar.

It's got some great reviews and I used it for recording once and was very impressed.
I think it retails at just about £120

Problem is I havent got a computer at home. Doh!!!
arse.
that's but a crapper on that one.
line6 also do the pod which i've heard som e good reviews about.
The gt6 is the daddy, but too be honest, if you're just playing in your bedroom it's probably a bit too much kit for that, plus the price is over your budget.
Zoom do some quite good boxes with built in drum machine if that's any good to you?

Just been having a look on the interweb, anyone know anything about the Boss ME50 or the Line6 MM4 which are both at my budget?

Ok I think I've settled on two choices either the Line6 Pod or the Behringer V Amp2. Which would you reccommend?
both :D
seriously, you'd really be better off going to a shop that could give you a demo.
Methinks yer gonna have to flip a coin....
I've had a V-Amp (original mk1) for a couple of years and it's a hugely versatile little box. I use it for recording only (I play bass live) and at the price (less than £100) it's superb. It also comes with a padded gig bag & two way footswitch. There's a Behringer MIDI foot controller available for live use.

Never heard a Behringer but I can vouch for Line6, I own a Flextone II amp and its a quality bit of kit and my mate owns a Pod XL and thats well smart. We both do home recording and the results you can get are excellent.

I've got one of these and a great piece of kit it is too. Here's a few examples of me messing around & the different sounds you can get out of it:

I don't know WTF I was thinking here....

That would be the little known Nirvana song Verse/Chorus/Verse or Sappy depending who you talk to (with extra added distortion)
:D
Hey ho ..my 2p
Preferred the overdriven sounds of the "Behringer Vamp",
the Behringer is a steal at £100
..on the other hand.. some of the Line6 modulation and delay effects are simply stunning.
depends what you want mate.
Not sure about either of these into an amp though..they seem to sound best either through good quality headphones or into a studio desk type input imo..its a levels thing methinks..maybe with experimentation they could sound OK through Hifi or what haveyou.
I have a Korg Pandora PX4 myself which probably sounds the worst of the bunch (its bass response is a bit wishy washy )... but includes a metronome, tuner, backing band, device to slow down your fave riffs, and a phrase/looper recorder..to jam with yourself !!! etc ..its great to mess around on. .. a real learning tool..i would recommend it to any aspiring shredder.(you did say a Jackson mate!!)
all the best
Rich
