Ryo Ishibashi as Aoyama: what are your thoughts on his character?
I'm doing a project on Aoyama and his role in the story, and I'd be really interested to hear anyone's views on him. What he represents to you, what you think his agenda is, whether his morals could stand up to scrutiny - stuff like that.
Anything that anyone can think of, please post it. It would be very helpful to have some outside opinions on this subject!
Oh, I thought you were on about the babe in the film.
She's nice.:D
Nothing like her character in the film (I hope! )
I felt that he had spent his time trying to do the right thing by being the devoted father. The time had come when the boy had grown up and signalled to him that it was okay with him if his father dated again. Thus, seeing his son dating and feeling a sense of relief/freedom AND faced with the prospect of an audition in his honour, he was like a child in a sweet shop.
With the flood gates opened, his emotions and repressed dreams run rife, as he flicks through the dossiers of beautifull and talented women.
What were his ties? Only to the memory and honour of his beloved wife. The flashbacks at the end ...
show that his strong bond with his wife had continued into the afterlife. I get the impression from the film that he repressed those feelings for fear of disapproval. It backfired, as she wasn't angry, only concerned, as she knew the psychotic vibrations around him were a danger. So, he acted against his nature, IMHO, and better judgment.
Was he immoral? I think what he did was unethical, certainly. From lonliness to the promise of eternal hapiness (she was much younger, very pretty, talented), I think he was under an inescapable spell to his doom.
Was he a bad man? I think, as a cinematic example, the character played by Oldman in Leon was pure evil, the character played by gibson in Ransom as an apallingly unethical businesman and Pee Wee Herman are good exaples of bad. I think of him as helplessly mislead by his renewed attachment to his adolescent dreams and his near dried up schlong.
