View Full Version : School of rock
Just watched Jack Blacks new movie "School of rock".
It gets a A+ from me!
Jack Black more or less plays himself and the children in the movie have been well cast.
Any movie that features the Clash's "Stay free" in the first 10 minutes has to be a winner in my book anyway.
This feelgood movie has shot into my top 3 of the year.
Anybody thats ever felt any passion about music should enjoy this...

Oh I've stooped many a time!! ;)
It really is a good film with a great soundtrack including a rehearsals montage to the Ramones "Bonzo goes to Bitzburg" (spelling or correct title?).
Just watched it and loved it
Never really been a fan JB in the past, but this is a great film with an excellent soundtrack. (AC/DC,The Who,The Darkness,Metallica etc).

Watched it and loved it, and will definitely do so again - this is the next best thing to a Tenacious D movie and will definitely tide me over until that particular masterpiece arrives.
Saw this last night, and have to say, both myself & the GF loved it. A nice heart warming, funny, easy watching film. Well worth watching. Its been getting some excellent reviews in the press.
Watched this while I was in New York. I and the whole place were on the floor with laughter. It's just a great piece of work.
"I've been touched by your kids... and I think I've touched them too"
Promotions starting to roll out for this in the UK with Jack Black appearing on tonights T.O.T.P.

saw a Radio 1 preview this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Lucky I arrived early as it said on the tickets 10.30 for 11 but it started at 10.30  , some people were only coming in at 11.
Anyway, good show, Mr Black was excellent.

Equally - preview morning for me too.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Harmless fun entertainment. :)
And Jack Black not half as annoying as he is in many of his recent "hits".

Watching it at the Filmworks Manchester this Wednesday thanks to Virgin's free screening offer.
Can't wait it looks quality, being a big fan of Jack Black already, am sure I will enjoy.
Just seen an ad on MTV2 for a Jack Black day on Saturday!! Should be fun :D
Saw this today! Great enjoyable family flick that seems prime material for Jack Black to be Jack Black! It rocks!

Absolutely fantastic. Out of a possible 10, it gets an 11 from me. Nearly perfect for sad old rockers like me.

That's a good enough recommendation for me :dork:
I've seen it a few times now, and it gets better every time :D
Ill be seeing this numerous times at the cinema- cant wait :D
Very enjoyable indeed. Black doing what he does best.
Linklater sure loves his rock after this and Dazed and Confused.
Guys, here comes a very un-rock 'n' roll question - Is this family friendly ? IE suitable for a mature nearly-7 year old who sat rapt throughout 'ROTK' ? (Please say yes !)

In my opinion yes, you should be ok. To be honest your daughter probably won't get half of the humor (some of which can be a little rude), but otherwise I think it's a film young kids can enjoy. I think it's rated PG-13.
The film would be fine for children, I can't think offhand of any rude humour but even if there was theres nothing that offensive, maybe a few minor swear words but the film is a lot of fun and your kids should love it :)
a wonderful easy to watch funny film! ive pre ordered the R1(********* will have it in 10 days!!)

Rated PG here in the UK - so compared to the 12 ROTK I think your kid will be fine :)

Our five-year old liked it - though it was slightly too 'old' for her, admittedly - and I don't recall any bad langwidge or rude bits at all
Mike.
loved this film! saw it on a virgin megastores(?) preview... was gutted when the cinema chooped it short during the end credits. go see it!

Outrageous that the cinema should cut the credits short. Especially this film ! Everyone stayed through the duration of them in the screening I saw - and this scene (for me) contained many of the most laugh out loud moments in the whole film (which I really enjoyed !).
Nice replies, guys. Went this afternoon and it went down a treat. Funny, schmaltz free and full of charm.
"Pig rectum ?"
Yep, whilst its slightly formulaic it avoids schmaltz and is terrific entertainment with some very funny bits in it. And the soundtrack, well, it rocks.
And the credits, as posted earlier I've never seen a cinema empty so s-l-o-w-l-y :D

saw this last night and thought it was very good, some great great laugh out loud moments.
Thinking of buying the soundtrack...but only if jack black has plenty of stuff on it.
I'm not really a fan of Jack Black movies but i do like his music and so in turn i liked this.
Cracking movie, Jack Black gets to be, well Jack Black and it works so well. Humour is great and yep, the end credits are superb. The line where he tells the parents he's been touched by their kids is one the LOL moments in a long time, the timing and delivery was perfect. Can't wait for a Tenacious D movie! Bring on the DVD, I may even get the soundtrack as it is superb.

O.k, thought I'd rock the boat a bit. I reckon it's a little overrated.
Now don't get me wrong I enjoyed it. But I didn't find it any where near as funny as I expected it to be (especially since I'm a massive JB Fan). Soundtrack was excellent and there were a couple of stand out moments, kid touching speech and end credits come to mind (which incidently only myself and 2 other people out of a packed cinema bothered to stay and watch  ). But all in all nothing special.
The fact that I hated most of the kids charachters though probably didn't help. The only one I liked was the little bitchy girl summer.
Gotta love Jack Black though, the man rocks

Best Sountrack Ever...

Saw this yesterday. A few cringeworthy, sickly sweet moments. But despite my mild dislike of child actors Jack Black and the music won me over.(Particularly the AC/DC-alike uniform.)
Oddly enough, the biggest laugh from the children in the audience was during one of the trailers when the name Dakota Fanning was put on the screen...
yawn.....this movie was 25 mins too longggggg - It was not nearly as funny as I thought it was going to be....
Almost everyone I spoke to though the same....
Anyway thats why everyone has opinions ! :O)
Great movie - could easily turned into a schmaltze-fest but avoided that and stayed warm and funny and cool.
I loved every minute of it. I don't know if there's much to say about it really, but it does the job its meant to do very well indeed. Thought Jack Black was fantastic and held the film together - it's a perilous sentimental tightrope and he walked it flawlessly. The kids were cute and funny, especially the camp one, and the music was very good. I laughed all the way through and felt better for seeing it, which is all you can ask from a film like this.

I loved it. Kinda like a weird hybrid of Sister Act and Wayne's World but not really either. :)
The funniest thing for me was the bit where Zack is told to open his eyes and loosen up a bit. The kid pulls a truly hysterical guitar face. :)
Soundtrack is a bit special alright.

I'd say the first hour was top class, but then it dipped a bit, then picked up towards to end!

It had some funny bits but, just reminded me of those awful Sister Act films!
Forgot to post in here :D
I thought this was excellent, great fun. Jack Black was brilliant, the kids werent annoying and the soundtrack...:notworthy
Will get the DVD next month:thumbs:
Just watched all the extras(apart from commentaries) on the dvd(*********:notworthy ), most are pretty average, just the usual run of mill doc, trailers etc, theres definetly not enough footage of the kids actually practicing with JB.
Although there is a funny segment where JB has to beg to Led Zeppelin to let him use their song!
That chinese kid who plays the keyboard is exactly like that in real life!
I though the extras were pretty good actually. A funny making of and Jack Black's MTV Diary to boot with possibly a new Tenacious D song at the end?? (I've not heard that one anyway)
Great film, superb little musicians and some great one liners.
"Sell my guitars? Would you tell Piccasso to sell his guitars?"
Thought it was ok, though I found it saccharin and condescending in places. Shame they couldn't manage to spell Siouxsie right mind you... :oh-hum:

Saw this last night, and I absolutely loved it. Jack Black's performance is what really made it for me- I thought he was excellent  The soundtrack was great, as were the kids- and I agree with Robby that there were some great one-liners. I'll definitely be picking this one up on DVD when it's released- it's just a big load of fun, and there can't be anything wrong with that, can there? :)
Saw it at the weekend & was expecting more after the "word of mouth" success it's had in the States and now here.
It made me smile & laugh a few times but hardly achingly funny.
If it means more Jack Black movies greenlit though, bring it on!
Agree with Wezzy - thought it was a good movie but not as 'hilarious' as others have mentioned. The young 'stylist' was funny though.

I thought it was quite a fun feelgood movie, although I didn't like it as much as some of you. I'm still not that keen on Jack Black, but he was okay in this. Overall more Bon Jovi than Led Zepplin.
p.s. Is the Tenacious D album any good?

Yes and the DVD The Complete Masterworks is even better but if you're not a JB fan then you may not like either as essentially this is JB upto "11".
Funny movie.
The climatic songs weren't all that to be honest but everything else was well done.

Its just a great little family film...
Anyone else watched it a second time and found it any better? (I've been doing this a lot recently).

I agree, it is a great one to watch. AND it has Mike White and Sarah Silverman in it, they're always watchable. :)

I've watched this quite a few times on DVD. Great pacing, very fun and feel good movie like people have said already. The scene where Dewey performs his unfinished song infront of class is superb.
And yea the Tenacious D cd is awesome, as is their live DVD. Can't wait to see their movie "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" at the end of the year.
