Whats the R3 like then ?.
I've read the review over at dvdtimes and would like to know if its worth holding out for the R2 edition ?.

The R3 seems to have perfectly decent picture and sound to me. Its main drawback is not being anamorphic. There aren't any real extras to speak of.
But it is available very cheaply, and right now.
An R2 release must be some way off given that it's still in cinemas - and I got mine for about the price of a ticket to see it in Soho. The R2 may be a superior disk or it may not, but it will certainly cost more.
The R3 picture is to me, perfectly fine - but not perfectly decent :) to clarify, it never looks terrible, but for a film made just last year the quality leaves a LOT to be desired. as i commented after Colins review, i owned the VCD and the DVD picture quality is not that much of a step up - it just loses all of the mpeg artifacts that the VCD had and adds that extra notch of definition - but is by no means what you'd expect for a recent film.
the disc is decent enough though, and as the UK R2 is Tartan, i'd expect anamorphic print of average quality with burnt in subs and the chances of them paying for DTS (or even DD5.1) is pretty unlikely!

Great video quality, audio is even better, best version of it available right now and it might be cut in UK, just get it, and it's cheap yeah.
Did anyone see a US indie film Mean Guns with Cristopher Lambert? It has the same kind of story, only it's not children on an island but rather grown up criminals in a newly built locked prison a day before it's grand opening, and all these crime syndicate's members are invited and given the ultimatum that only the last 3 should live and will get 10 million dollars hidden somewhere, then thrown a bunch of weapons and a few crates of ammo at them, so everyone scurries to pick them up and load and shoot each other ASAP, it's very funny and I like it more than Battle Royale
I'd say the video quality is far from great. The best version so far is the Japanese R2 release, sadly this is very expensive and doesn't have any subs.
A good Battle Royale site is here (http://battleroyale.allhere.com/)
Did anyone else burst out laughing at the videotape ??
I thought it was one of the funnies things I've seen for ages.
It was the first R3 I've ordered, but for the price it's certainly worth it. Chances are the DVD will be cut over here.
I've just ordered Shaolin Soccer, can't wait for that :D

I had exactly the same problem m8 and got similar responses.
Try this FAQ here (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/index.html)
It should explain what anamorphic is and what it means to you.

Shaolin Soccer sounds like a cross between Street Fighter and a footy match. Theres some comments in the DVD Review Forum http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21972
Also do a search for it on the movie database, I'd paste a link but it seems down at the moment.
I aint seen the film yet, but I don't think I'e read a bad review of it yet !

I very much doubt it. The cinema release is uncut.
I have seen the Japanese version over here and it is very expensive at 5600 Yen (Around 30 pounds - sorry but I can`t use the pound sign). I really do wish that the version had a dub or even subs so that I can understand it :) Maybe it does? I saw two versions on the amazon.co.jp website. I think the best thing to do is get a colleague to read the cover of the dvd for me :)

Cool, Philc is in Tokyo!
Hey, uhh...what other US TV series are out in Japan besides Dark Angel, ER and Ally McBeal? :o
I love this Dark Angel set I got, very high quality and would like to get something else maybe.

But wasn't the cinema release of Predator uncut, compared to the DVD ?? I know the DVD cut was made by Fox, not the BBFC but you never know.

personally, I'd like the film given a PG and shown to all school children. Hopefully learning something of it in the process.

Yeah, just like with A Requiem for a Dream.
Some kids are much smarter than they look or their parents think they are, and do not need to be "shielded" from things and lied to all the time. They WANT the truth!
But some are just dumb, or stay kids till they are 40, and will not take these movies seriously, but instead, grab daddy's Desert Eagle from the rack and play "war" one morning. :D
Was the UK cinema release dubbed or was it in subtitles? Is there a dubbed version of the dvd available?
Mr Vampire
17-10-2001, 16:44
It's not dubbed. (hopefully all films will only have their original soundtrack + language)
Subtitles are a whole lot better, and the ones for the region 3 dvd aren't too bad.
But don't ever tell me you want a dub ever again... why I oughtta... you'll know why. :)
I agree, sub is better, take the original edition of Akira for example , or the aweful dubbing of ghost in the shell, but its for the rest of the people in my house who hate subs
