Having bought the R2 release of Musashi Miyamoto (Samurai I), I put it on tonight and was dismayed at the exceptionally poor picture quality - almost sub-VHS. :(

I notice that this film and its two sequels are both available on Criterion. Has anyone seen these?

Assuming the picture quality is better than the R2 (please, tell me it is! - having seen Criterion Hidden Fortress I believe these people can work wonders and probably walk on water too), does anyone have any opinions on the best place to buy these from?

Play247 doesn't appear to stock them, and ********* has parts 2 and 3 but not part 1 (as far as I can see). That pretty much exhausts my knowledge of DVD retail sites. If anyone has any opinion on a cheap, fast(ish) place to buy these from, the information would be greatly appreciated.

...sorry to disappoint you: the CC discs of the Samurai trilogy are "ok" at best (image & sound) ... guess Criterion can only do so much with the material they're given... still, it's a nice set and I, for one, do not regret having it in my DVD 'collection' !

. . . :o . . .

...any opinions expressed in this post are strictly my own!...

Lasersedge.com (http://www.lasersedge.com/title/20046) have a good selection of Criterions. The Samurai movies are $22.44 each plus shipping ($4 for 1st item then $2 per extra item). Delivery might take up to two weeks.

But probably not cheaper than *********

I have seen them. The quality is very good considering the age and the origin.
