OK, i'm gonna get the Jap 3 discer, but...

Should I hold onto my R1 as well (The subtitles SEEM to be very good).

Or..

Should I get the forthcoming UK R2, with free book (AFAIK its the same disc as the R!1)

Or...

Does the Japanese release cover all the bases (apart from the book).

Anyone sort me out??

Mononoke is becoming extremely expensive from the fans point of view :)

Here is my take on what is available, and what is forthcoming.

R1 = Good, although I've heard the Canadian version (which I have) has a poorer picture than US version????? (enlightenment please :) )

UK R2 = Identical to US, including hopefully, literal subs. The book is GREAT - and is now thought to be standard (one release apparently, not two like previously thought).

Jap R2 = Picture has the chance to be better than R1 - the japanese know there stuff and its certainly possible, BUT, I highly doubt to see 2 sets of English subs, and they'll go with the dubtitle IMO. Storyboards will be great, and i'm sure there will be more extras included, plus this 3-disc set is just gonna look gorgeous (packaging wise) and complete my R2 Ghibli collection.

French R2 = Found out about this the other day, the French love this film (publically i'm thinking, not fan circles like with UK) and it got a theatrical release there - a special edition release is expected January to feature MORE extras the US/UK version. What they will be is unknown.

Also - did you know those lucky French people (i really regret not paying attention in school now with all these great French film related goodies of late) are getting a Theatrical Release of Spirited Away?

My course of action (if you're interested)....

R1 = I have, and i'm keeping it.
Jap R2 = On order (along with documentary) - gone for cheap price (£57 for the pair from Amazon japan) - means a longer wait but i'm in no rush (unlike Totoro, kiki's etc on their release).

Once I have the Jap release - I'll keep it no matter what, but depending on the films presentation (subs/picture) i'll either keep/trade my R1. And depending on thoughts of UK Mononoke i'll trade my R1 for that (if the Jap R2 does not satisfy me subs/picture wise)....

Am I insane? YES, but i love this film and its worth every penny.

Cheers for the advice.

My R1's on eBay anyway (looks like i'll get more than I paid for it too!?!)

Probably pick up the R2 for the book, then, like yourself, sell it (minus book :) ), if the Jap R2 is the daddy.

BTW, my R1 was the Canadian release, and if that's a poor picture I can't wait to see what the Jap release looks like :D

is the book LE ?

you can buy the book separately (about £15) - but I *Think* the DVD Edition of Mononoke is now just ONE release and all copies will include the miniaturised book (just look at prices on Amazon and Play247, £19.99 and £17.99 respectively) - both only have 1 version available as well. could be wrong though but i definitely read it on some anime site that all UK copies would include the book., which is only a good thing IMO - just don't read the entire book if you've not seen Miyazaki's films - we're talking MAJOR spoilers (but you are warned in the preface).

and when does R2 come out ?

Oct 22nd. and its a PG!! (was expecting a 12)

Surely they'll subtitle it, won't they? If, so I may just be able to follow the plot. Having said that, hopefully it will get released in some arthouse cinemas around london.

By the way, I heard the japanese R2 of Totoro came with a Large poster and some clear A4 case (first couple hundred of pre-orders). Did Kiki come with some kind of extra aswell, or why did you have to rush to get them??

oh yeah, in French - but i've forgotten practically every bit of French I ever learnt in school....:( still, French Theatrical release is January 16th, gives me enough time to hopefully get the basics of Japanese down :)

Regarding Totoro freebies - see here (http://website.lineone.net/~lawrencium/bonus.html) for pics of the poster and a4 folder....looks quite nice, only came with the 1st 150 pre-orders at CDJapan - but you had to pay extra postage to receive them.

Never heard about Kiki's coming with anything similar, but maybe its a possibility with future pre-orders?

If you're in New York this/next week you can catch a preview of Spirited Away as part of the New York-Tokyo Anime Festival. Believe me, if my wife wasn't about to give birth in the next few days I'd be on a plane right now. :D

The canadian DVD features strong colours and detail, but it also sports some print damage and grain, whilst the USA release is meant ot be spotless.

Me too. Not just for the gore but for the knife fighting, given the trouble this caused for Tomb Raider. Maybe if you don't twirl the blade it's okay? Must've been the positive messages the film was sending out to children that clinched it, although I doubt there'll be many ppl under 15 watching it over here anyway.

I think the BBFC dislike glamourisation of weapons (so twirling a knife before its use is a no-no in PG/12 cert films)...and twirling a knife can look pretty cool so therefore its saying to kids - look at that, you can be just like Lara Croft if you do that :)
