No booklet in mine either.
Picture quality was probably on par with what I'd expected really. More down to the film stock used than any mastering defects.

Picture quality is fine for me. It definitely shows tthat it's not anamophic, but the low shadow detail looks like it's inherited from the film itself to me. It's only a low budget indy film anyway, so what do you expect?
I loved the dodgy subtitles, really added to the black comedy feel. :)

I watched the Tartan VHS of this & I culd barely see the subtitles throughout a lot of the scenes. What is it like on the DVD version?
The VHS cersion was so bad that i had to sit with my face right up to the screen just to read the subs in some scenes!! In the end I decided to turn the contrast & brightness right down, which helped a little bit.
Oh & I reckon that:
No way in a million years would this film be passed uncut by the BBFC if Asami was a man & Shigeharu a woman.
Very good film though!

The R3 DVD features crisp player generated B&W subs.
My copy of Audition didnt have a booklet. I cant remember any of Tartans releases coming with a booklet/chapter list.

My copy of Ring 2 came with a nice postcard for Audition - why Tartan couldn't have included that in the Audition set is beyond me! Not that it matters but it would've been a nice touch from them, for a change!

Do you mean the quality of the subtitles, or the fact that they were sometimes on a background of a similar colour?

I didn't realise that the subs were player generated on the R3 - come to think of it, it goes without saying that they would be. Pah, I knew I should've ordered that instead of getting the Tartan release. Is R3 Ring any good?

P.S. the only good thing about the Tartan release is that there aren't many noticeable compression artifacts, and there is an interesting interview with the director.

There is no region 3 version of the Ring at present (I would've got it by now), only seems to be the Tartan DVD-5 (single layer) version version and a Region 2, Japanese release without english subtitles and a heavy price tag. There's another option though. You could get the Korean version of Ring (not the same actors, but not a remake. Made at the same time and using the same source for inspiration). This should be a cheaper option, with english subtitles and anamorphic transfer (but little on the extras department from what I gather).

The usual, burnt in subtitles on a white background problem. :(
I just wondered if it was worse on the VHS version, due to the inferiior pic quality.
Forgive me if the answer is above but what region and where should I get:
- Audition (and while you're at it.....
- Ring
- Ring 2 ;) )
I cannot help but buy everything you guys recommend abd these seem must have / see discs. However, I do not mind waiting if there are superior versions in the pipe line.

I bought all mine R2 from Play247 at £14.99 each.
Don't know about any alternate region releases but you might be able to shop around a bit and get them cheaper.

If I remember correctly Lorenzo, someone stated in an earlier thread that all 3 are being released on R4 soon, so they might be the ones to go for. All 3 are distributed by Tartan in the U.K, which means they have burnt in subtitles & mediocre anamorphic video. The R3 Audition is nice & cheap (£8.50 from DDDHouse (http://www.dddhouse.com)) & it has player generated subs, but the picture's non-anamorphic, so it's slightly worse than the R2's picture (so i've heard, not seeing either version myself).

Personally, I'd rather give my money to the R3 distributer rather than a bunch of jokers like Tartan [Take alook at HKL you morons !]. The fact that its nearly half price too makes it very tempting, might have to consider getting this soon.
I take it its very good ?.
R4? sounds good - let me know if you recall / find that thread as can't.
