The German title is horrible though. "Play Me the Song Of Death"!?
I had originally preordered the R1 version of "Once...West" BTW, but when I saw it today in a local store I just couldn't resist. Great cover and great AV-quality (first time I saw it in 2.35:1), I haven't watched the extras yet though.....
You lucky *EDIT* the R2's not officially released till Monday, which shop did you buy it out of?:suspect: :D :thumbs:

which is best region ?
Cheapest is R1 (a shade over £7 at dvdsoon), but not out till November. It's 2-disk, but that's all I know.

Bought it this morning. It's out today where Mark and I are from.

any differences between the R1 & 2 or are they identical?
noticed this was out in the next few days and is awfully tempting.
I've only seen it in proper 2.35:1 once...., on TV its completely destroyed even in 16:9 widescreen.
one of those films that really needs it.. did anyone see the recent BBC2 showing of Hell in the Pacific? ruined!
big 2.35:1 shots reduced to pan & scan - one person standing on the far left of screen, the other completely off screen... terribly done.
Once Upon a Time in the West.. exactly the same.

The R1 has an English Dolby 5.1 soundtrack and a mono soundtrack, the R2 only 5.1.
Besides that, I think the only differences are the usual PAL/NTSC issues.

Despite its reputation, the film was never especially successful in English-speaking countries - Germany and France were the places where it attained serious blockbuster status.

So is Claudia Cardinale's voice dubbed in it or not ?? Ie is that her actual voice in the film ???

OUATITW was filmed without sound anyway, so all the parts were dubbed, but half the cast spoke English and half Italian, so it's half and half which dubbed track is more accurate. I think for those that spoke English, those actors were used to provide the English dub, whereas some of the Italian actors might have been dubbed by others, but I don't know.
Claudia is an odd case as apparently she'd been dubbed for a while in her career just because of her accent. According to this interview (http://film.guardian.co.uk/interview/interviewpages/0,6737,955219,00.html), this stopped after 1963, so it's possible she did the English dub. The question is what did she speak on screen. She's Italian, so she might have spoken Italian, but with the principle cast speaking English, maybe it would have benefitted to speak English. I'm not sure and I'll have to review the DVD when I get it to check the lip-sync. I don't recall it looking odd last time I saw it though.
Whichever way, I've always thought the English "dub" to be more accurate because at least the principle cast don't look like it's a bad dub as at least there's some lip-sync. The lesser supporting cast that speak Italian... we don't care about so much :D. If the entire cast spoke Italian, I'd rather have Italian with subtitles, but having Italian dubbed over English would look too odd.
