I don't remember the film all that well but will definitely be buying it. As for the series, well that's not a bad price for 24 episodes and the absence of the 'canned laughter' (I think it's called) is a huge plus point. I wasn't expecting anything other than mono to be honest. Seems to have disappeared from Sky now as well, not surprisingly.
I am sooo impressed that they're releasing the tv series WITHOUT the laughter track. I watched the series avidly on BBC2 during the 80's and when I went to re-watch on satellite a few years ago I was shocked to find a laughter track present. While essentially a sitcom it often covered some very serious issues and contained a lot of drama. It was downright disrepectful to laugh at times!
And $40 for the entire first season of 24 episodes is a bargain! Mind you that still leaves another TEN seasons!
Deaks.
I remember watching this when it was originally shown on BBC2 and recall seeing an episode with the laughter track...bloody awful!
Later that week, I caught Points of View (with Barry Took); apparently they'd had literally hundreds of complaints. If I remember correctly, the explanation was that; "a technician had forgotten to press a button."
A classic series for the most part, except for those episodes toward the end of it's run that were directed by Alan Alda; too many "cute Korean kid" story lines.

I remember the exact same incident!

M*A*S*H, for, me, is the greatest anti-war film ever made, and a rock solid entry in my top ten best of all time.
M*A*S*H the series just goes to show that you CAN change major characters without upsetting the viewers. I also LOVED the recurring characters that popped up once or twice each series, expecially the CIA agent Col. Flagg played by the late Edward Winter and singer Loudon Wainwright III, seen recently in 28 Days and in session on Radio One this weekend.
Some trivia:
Almost 125 million people watched the final episode, at that time the largest audience ever for a television program.
The series (about an Army hospital unit in the Korean war) lasted three times longer than the Korean War itself.
Deaks.

Certainly hope so, although if the U.S. get involved in any sort of ground war they could consider it inappropriate to release them.
They are relatively cheap when compared to something like the X-Files season box sets. Perhaps they plan to release them more frequently as a result. I hope so.

It's a personal opinion,as always,but i think 'Catch 22' is the ultimate searing anti-war film.

I've been in withdrawal ever since SKY stopped showing the repeats. Just at the time I ate my supper!
And cheap as well!
But just how many series were there?
It could get expensive...

11 I think, only 251 episodes. ;)
Actually, you've just reminded me I recorded 2 episodes of M*A*S*H starting at 2:40 a.m. that I haven't watched.
i will be definitely be buying the M*A*S*H film but definitely not the dire series (with or without laughter track it still isnt funny IMO of course :) ).
I'd have to agree with Robert Altman who also hates the series that it didnt do the film any favours and diluted the anti-war message of the film quite badly.

For me it's exactly the other way around - I never liked the movie. I think it's not funny, boring and extremely pretentious.
Or in other words: an Altman movie.
I've never understood why people consider him a great director. I almost fell into a coma while watching Short Cuts.
The series was funny, intelligent and featured the most likable cast ever. If I could only buy one TV series on DVD it would be MASH.
Any television archivist worth their salt would most certainly say that M*A*S*H is one of the greatest series ever -- and it in no way diluted the anti-war message of Altman's original movie.
Altman's cynical, cold style was completely unsuited to a weekly television sitcom, so of course they were very different.
Alan Alda, Larry Gelbart et al made tv heaven with M*A*S*H and this news of a DVD release (with the option of no horrendous laugh track) is terrific.
Seinfeld next, please!
Excellent news a must have dvd my wallet is going to take a severe dent between collecting all M*A*S*H and Babylon5 if every episode is eventually released of both Tv series. :)

Continued releases of M*A*S*H may depend on how popular this first Season is. Sadly though, apart from the December release of The Gathering/In The Beginning, there are no plans to release any more Babylon 5 DVDs in 2002 according to Studio Day 2001.
