does anyone know when you record a programme to dvd-r and finalise the disc to dvd video, will it play on a dvd player for example in australia

If you mean region coding, no all DVD-R discs are region 0. But the PAL/NTSC issue will remain.

Should work OK in Oz - same TV systems as UK.
