This thread is for all DJ Shadow and UNKLE questions, answers and info!
I am no expert, but several of the contributors to this thread certainly know their stuff!!! :dork: ;)
The latest info I can find, is that the Diminishing Returns Party Pak, (which I thought was a limited release thru Shadows website) is due for release in the UK next month!

Official DJ Shadow only albums are "Entroducing", "The Private Press", "Pre-emptive Strike", "Camel Bob-sled Race" and "The Private Re-press".
Entroducing only came out as a single disc. I can't see this classic being issued any other way ever...
The Private Press came out as a single or double disc set, although the double disc was limited to about 1,000 worldwide. I can't see the two disc edition being released again (although Amazon.co.uk have some in stock). Amazon also have a Japanese import with a couple of extra tracks (which I think are available on other UK releases).
The Private Re-press is meant to be coming out in May (?), but I can't find any info on it. I thought it was meant to have rare remixes (including the Soulwax mix of Six Days), and I think it might already be out in Japan?????
Camel Bob-sled Race is a 23 minute mix of DJ Shadow tracks by Q*bert. I can't see this being issued any other way except for...
Pre-emptive Strike is avaliable on import only in the UK, but on release was avaliable as a single disc, or a two disc set including Camel Bob-sled race. I can't see this being issued in the UK as it's made up of b-sides to his UK Mo' Wax singles...
Just get his stuff - it's wicked!!

Anyone heard the demos for Endtroducing? I thought they were far cooler than the album. A few tracks that he's neverr re-recorded either (I think - it was a bootleg cassette).
Following on from Fat Man Hackett here is some more info gjkendall:
Endtroducing - a single disc that is available on mid-price throughout the UK and has featured in all of the recent "3 for £18" or similar offers in UK retailers. The greatest album ever.
Pre-emptive strike - only available on import, the ones including "Camel Bobsled Race" stopped about 2 years ago although you could be lucky to find one. It is a compilation of some of the material recorded before Endtroducing. This was released in the USA whilst in the UK there were singles that had some of these tracks as B-sides.
Camel Bobsled Race - still on general release in the UK so available fairly easily. A mix of Shadow tracks by DJ Q*Bert. Alright.
The Private Press - actually there were 20,000 copies of the double-disc set released. They are still available at amazon and many retailers because the 2CD version was priced excessively highly and because the second disc, a mix called "Pushin' Buttons" is roundly regarded as being poor amongst Shadow fans.
The Private Repress - I posted a thread about this weeks ago which includes the tracklisting - http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=176651&highlight=repress

Can I recommend that if you like DJ Shadow you check out work by Unkle, James Lavelle, Unklesounds, Quannum, SoleSides Greatest Bumps and you might like UK artists like Aim and Deadly Avenger.
There are also various bootlegs available, such as the DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist mix albums Product Placement and Brainfreeze; DJ Shadow Live from Austin and Quannum Projects Live on British Radio.
---
The new Unkle album - "Never Neverland" does indeed come out soon and contrary to some press reports, I can confirm that DJ Shadow has co-written and produced the whole album - so it should be v. good :)

So then... What was completely wrong about my post? I got the number of 2-disc Private Presses wrong and...
Having re-read our posts, I guess you think Imay be saying that the discs aren't avaliable any more. I wasn't saying that. What I was saying is that there won't be any re-issues with extras tracks etc. etc. coming out.
Was the 'Dark Days' soundtrack never released?

No, don't think so. The soundtrack from the film seems to be made up of stuff from Endtroducing, plus the main theme (which you should be able to download easily).

Sorry :( I've amended my post in line with this - It read to me like you meant they couldn't be obtained any more!
Dark Days - a single featuring the Main Theme and Spoken For Mix was released - I have the CD here. For this one, there were just 1,000 CD's and 1,000 7"s released worldwide. Cat. no. is 088155778-2 on MCA in the USA.

Cheers for all advice given on this thread...
I ended up buying Entroducing for £7.99 in my local HMV and 2 AIM cd's (what is the stars on 33 by AIM like?).
What is the best version of PRIVATE PRESS to get, I so nearly bought the 2 disc import in HMV (this had a bonus disc of remixes and edits), but thought maybe the REPRESS would be the one to go for....so I decided to ask your advice first!

Just seen that there is a three disc version of the Private Press, what is this about, cannot find any onfo on this at all!!!!!!
Nujol/Fatman: where are you guys, I need you help?
Fat Man Hackett
28-04-2003, 15:04
No idea?!?!?! I've just seen it at HMV.co.uk. I'll put an order in now...
I've got REPRESS now ;) just remixes but it is pretty good, not an "album" though (i.e. not a coherent selection of songs), just a set of mixes, many of which are very good - including the Soulwax one of course.
As for the 3CD, I've never heard of this, and the catalogue number 5869362 is the catalogue number for the single disc version. Therefore it is either an error or something I've not seen.
I would absolutely love to be proved wrong but I think it's an error.
Why not order it, then if it doesn't turn up as a three disc, you've not lost anything as they should take it back. :)
Forgot to add...
1) The UNKLESOUNDS 3CD "Do Androids Dream of Electric Beats" popular in these parts is being withdrawn due to sample clearance issues. Get one quick if you can - 101cd had them in stock last time I looked.
2) Aim "Stars on 33"? Not heard of it! I have what I thought were the only 3 Aim CD's, namely "Cold Water Music" (Brilliant), "Hinterland" (Very good) and "Means of Production" (Very good). Do tell more! Just gonna search for it now! :)
EDIT: Found Stars on 33 - and it has reminded me of a brilliant hip-hop album in the Shadow vein - all bow down to "The Cold Vein" by Cannibal Ox - yet another masterpiece

It was a thread on this forum a few weeks ago (about the unklesounds 3cd) that has got me collecting this stuff! The unklesounds discs are my favourites at the moment!
I had a mail from HMV saying the the 3 disc is out of stock and they are waiting for more to come in! (i doubt they will be able to get it), but I'll keep it on order just in case!
If you're into hip-hop and rap then I would really recommend Spectrum by Quannum. It's really chilled-out hip-hop/rap with the music supplied by DJ Shadow. There's hardly any swearing, nothing about guns, bitches etc., it's just cool, soulful hip-hop with cracking beats. :)

Absolutely nothing to do with it being a bootleg then?

Just checked on HMV and there is yet another UNKLE release on the horizon....its called 'Big Brother Is Watching' from the tracklisting it appears to be a 2CD condensed version of 'Do Androids Dream Of Electro Beats' and presumably more legal. However, there are new tracks on it which do not appear on the 'Androids' cds, for example John Lennon's 'Instant Karma'

Everyone knew they were not the original CDs being sold mr.nick - the original was made privately by James Lavelle and mainly given away at gigs and a few were sold in London. Since it is just a mix CD and so effectively a compilation, it is not however treated by quite the same rules, as it is not possible for someone to hold copyright simply on a mix. As I have already stated, it is being withdrawn due to clearance issues - i.e. the record company (based in Italy I believe) that have produced this do not have clearance to release those tracks on a compilation.
It is unfair to class it as a bootleg, since James' original CDs could equally be classed as bootlegs because they were not cleared either.
As far as I've read, that new one was also originally done by James, not sure on the details yet. Have to check on that though, ok :)

If anyone's interested in getting the new Shadow promos (2 x 12"), try your local independant record shop or dance music shop. These have been going for around £20 each on eBay, yet a mate picked some up for me for only £5 each.
Also, note that Dark Days only came out on 7" (which I just paid £20 for) and CD, and that the 12" versions on eBay are bootlegs.

They only have four now though :p
Yup, it is the distributers who are no longer sending them out - any existing stock will not be recalled, hence the suggestion to order them whilst 101cd still had stock. :)

RJD2 - Deadringer
and if Josh Davis had been raised on Art Blakey instead of David Axelrod then he'd probably sound like Jay Swinscoe's:

HMV yesterday had another version of Private Press, where the second disc contained the audio tracks that will be on Private Re-Press. I'll happily wait until Re-press comes out (although I think I've got most of the tracks on promo 12"'s...).
Diminishing Returns = the essential mix he did a few weeks ago on Radio 1, it's alright but not the best I've heard.
AFAIK stuff like Brainfreeze is all bootlegs, Josh has said in the past that they will never be reissued and that the few 1,000 copies made would be the only ones.
The Private Press / Private Repress is an interesting combo - was it a UK release? :)
Fat Man Hackett

Not UK, but not sure where. Australia maybe? It was £20, and the only difference (I think) from the forthcoming UK versions is that the videos were missing...

I ordered The Private Press from cd-wow expecting just the one-disc version but instead got the two-disc 'tour edition' through the door this morning :) Wasn't particularly bothered about getting the extra CD as I'd heard it wasn't that great, but was still a nice surprise
Quite a few questions here so away I go:
What are Quannum (I think thats how you spell it?) like? DJ Shadow is a member of their collective, anyone heard anything?
Also, I've just taken a flyer and ordered blind a David Axelrod Anthology, seeing as though he inspired Shadow and I've never heard a note, what can I expect?
For all you Shadow hunters, I seen a copy of Product Placement Breaks in HMV in Croydon on Sunday, if anyones interested. There were also 4 versions of Private Press (Standard, Tour Edition, a Japanese edition (with a raft of remixes) and Private Repress) in there too.
Anyone heard anything of the new Unkle release yet...??

Had a look in Virgin Megastore / HMV earlier in the week and no sign of it.
Dunno if its been posted but the new UNKLE single is called 'Eye For An Eye' the video is available download on the UNKLE website. Great video, bit Pink Floyd 'Brick In The Wall.' The song is good, but I don't think good enough to be a single, works well with the vid but not on its own.
If you want to know what it sounds like without downloading the video then a similar instrumental version can be found on the 'Do Androids Dream of Electro Beats' its the one with Led Zepellin-esque acoustic guitar strum loop.
am i being really stupid here or is there nothing on the unkle website yet apart from a 'relaunch soon' picture?

No one's yet mentioned the High Noon stand-alone single. You can get 2 of the three tracks on there on a U.S. import but one is missing (can't remember which). Fantastic single. Once heard a band cover it on the Evening Session, which seemed pretty cool...

Quannum Projects are fantastic. Check out the Quannum - Spectrum album, particularly track 3, "Storm Warning" by Latryx (of Blackalicious fame) - stunning lyricism and incredibly atmospheric music.
Also well worth a look is Blackalicious' album N.I.A - track 3, "Do This My Way", knocks me out.

Went into HMV at The Fort in Birmingham today, and under the Quannum section, I noticed that they had a new bootleg in (Good on ya, HMV!!). Called "Live On British Radio", these are the two fantastic sets that Quannum and Shadow recorded for The Breezeblock in 2000 (I think it was 2000).
Fans of Quannum have got to get this disc (or find the sets online), as this is a great live set from a great collective.
Yup got that live bootleg from Quannum a while ago now. Good stuff although nothing that can't be downloaded for free - and considering all the bootleggers do is d/l it, put it on a CD and charge the Earth for it (with no money going to the artist), I'd search for it on the net first! :)
Cracking stuff tho, esp the live version of Storm Warning mentioned above by Radiohead.

Any thoughts on this release? Is it legit?
It won't be legit, they only made 980 copies and they all sold to fans via www.djshadow.com - these will surely be more bootlegs of Italian origin. I would say that it would be impossible for this to be released officially due to clearance issues - even if it were cleared it would take months to do.

Just listening to a live mix of Blood On The Motorway - it's called "Blood on the Motorway DJ Shadow Live Beats Mix" and it is very good, the song played a little differently with more rhythmic drumming throughout. Look out for it on the net if you can find it. :)

Amazon are now listing Dimishing Returns but it doesn't have an appropriate catalogue number to be an official Island/A&M/Mo'Wax release... plus they say it is 1CD.
The Private Repress has now disappeared for preorder from the usual music retailers, not sure if that means it won't now get an official UK release.
Didn't notice until today (perhaps it did this before but I missed it) but www.unkle.com now plays about a 10 second clip of music.

No-one's mentioned it yet, so I will...
There's a new DJ Shadow CD out this week, which is probably the reason why we're not getting The Private Repress (as it seems to be made up of tracks from this & those included on previous single releases from The Private Press).
Anyway, new CD includes:
1) Right Thing (Z-Trip mix)
2) Six Days (Soulwax mix)
3) GDMFSOB (UNKLE mix with Roots Manuva)
4) Walkie Talkie (Radio edit)
5) Mashin' on the Motorway (Radio Edit)
There's a DVD packed in there too, featuring Walkie Talkie and Mashin' on the Motorway vids, both of which are... groovy!!!
Cheapest I could find it online was £6.99 from Sainsbury's (of all places). I ordered it yesterday and it arrived today!
Anyway, would recommend this to Shadow fans, though I guess it depends on how you feel about paying £25 for an import of The Private Repress, or waiting for a release over here...

I got this last week from eBay (of all places). I only paid £6, which looks like it was a bargain, but I hadn't seen it in the shops (although I haven't done my weekly HMV trip due to moving house!!).
Nice little two-disc package!!
Also, did anyone happen to tape / capture the DJ Shadow hour they played on Sunday night on MTV2? I really wanna get hold of the film they showed with the old drummers and the scratch DJ's... Any help would be appreciated!
Hello there...
Just to let you know my 'diminishing returns party pak' turned up today. It was number 736.
Great Packaging!!!

Picked mine up from amazon.co.uk @ £5.99 as part of a big order so free P+P. Not had a chance to listen yet though :)

What are the lessons cds like by Shadow and cut chemist?
Fat Man Hackett
07-07-2003, 19:23
The Lessons is an alright CD. I can't find mine yet due to the house move, but I think it contained the original 3 lessons (by Steinski, maybe?), Shadow's Lesson 4, Cut Chemist's Lesson 4 (from the original US EP - containing the Led Zep / Frank Sinatra samples) and some other live Shad and Chem tracks of varying quality. If you like your hip-hop, it's worth getting, but I wouldn't bother if you only like Shadow.
On an UNKLE note, I bought Big Brother Is Watching today from my local HMV. 2 discs, cool packaging, £16 - it's a bootleg of the Essential Mix, but it's top quality audio and a nice bit of cardboard and plastic.

Anybody know if the Cops 'n' Robbers version (samples from 'Heat' - De Nero/Pacino) of Stem can be found on CD, I have it on 7" and I think it's a much better version.

Are you not better off just getting the CD / DVD from HMV for £7? You're only missing one mix which is avaliable on the vinyl (another £7)... I can talk - I've got the CD / DVD, the vinyl, and I'm meeting my mate from Tokyo tomorrow in Vancouver, and he's got a copy for me...

I have seen these for sale without the bags!
HMV and PLAY247 do not sell theirs in the bag! Is it worth complaining if you have bought your copy from them?
Blu3Flame
16-07-2003, 10:03
You could do, but I'm sure you were expecting a bootleg anyway if you ordered from play/hmv or at least I did.
lol the HMV / Play / 101cd / Amazon Marketplace ones are all bootlegs.
The original version was limited to IIRC 960 and is two individual discs sealed in a plastic bag with the logo stapled as card on the top.
EDIT: There are none of the originals left available and none will ever be made again. You'll be paying £30-40 minimum for an original one now via say ebay and even then watch out that it isn't a bootleg being sold.

I noticed it was first a bootleg because it said PARTY PAK on the cover :D how can it be the party pak if there is no coasters or anything. Bootleggers should have left that out, then ppl may have believed it was the standard release of the party pak.

Apart from the fact that the Artist has received no money for his work whilst a company running a massive illegal piracy operation has made a large wad of cash in profit, which in many cases goes on to fund deeper criminal activities such as drug trafficking.

17-07-2003, 10:52
How are HMV et al allowed to sell these then?
Fat Man Hackett
18-07-2003, 01:56
I doubt any of the artists on the CD's OR DJ Shadow have made any profit from any of the original Party Paks. They were $15 dollars each, and for that you got 2 pressed CD's, 2 coasters, 2 stickers and some top packaging (which may or may not have been put together by Josh himself!).
As for how HMV etc. sell these - I don't know... I'm not even sure if they are aware. At the moment you can get the old UNKLE 3 disc mix, the new UNKLE 2 disc mix, the Quanum disc and the Shadow 2 disc mix all from HMV's in Birmingham and they're all bootlegs. Two of these sets are just recorded from Radio One!!
I've now got my Private Repress

I hate to break it to you but the new album's really, really poor. And i'm a fan. :(
How poor? We need details. Goddammit, I'm sick of bands/groups/DJs I like turning rubbish. Finding new music is so much like... hard work :gag:

There's a few good tracks like the Queens of the stone Age/Ian brown tunes and the one that samples Black sabbath but the rest is just dreary dull beats that'll send you to sleep faster than a box full of sleeping pills.
DJ Shadows pressence is severley missed.

So I "disapprove of drugs" do I???? (I'll assume that you are referring to illegal drugs).
And where did I say that???
What I said was that the money from bootleg records often goes into criminal organisations, which may be involved in activities such as drug trafficking. Drug trafficking is often a terrible crime that relies on poor, innocent people taking massive risks and paying dreadful penalties if things go wrong, whilst their masters live in luxury.
Disagreeing with illegal mass drug trading is not the same as disapproving of drugs themselves.

Agreed. Its very underwhelming. Its sounds like a South album the Ian Brown / Mani collaboration is just a rehash of the Unklesounds remix of F.E.A.R. And as for the other tracks the beats are a bit tepid, the things which sprung to my mind were that it sounds in places like Chicane and one of the tracks sounds like that annoying Everything But The Girl 'Mss You' remix.
Not good.

I've had the album about a month, and I've still got mixed feeling for it. Yes, I know Shad isn't on it, and that's why the hip-hop has dissapeared, but it's so different to the other "dance" albums out lately that I've been going back for a listen. The DVD with the album redeems itself by having a QOTSA mix of Eye for an eye, and a "featurette" (I hate that word) with Futura talking about the artwork. Plus, I can't listen to my copy once the original is out, can I

I've got product placement and until today i thought it was the real thing but i think i've got a bootleg cos it seems to be missing a numbered hologram sticker on the front , bit of a pain i thought it was the real thing when i bought it.

quality, i was worried that if james lavelle was left to do it on his own that it'd be influenced to much by house music. where did you hear this by the way?
oh and does anyone know if the rumours are true about Josh Homme being on the new album? i know they've done a remix for QOTSA so it seems likely.

As mentioned elsewhere.....VERY disappointing DVD included with the CD/DVD package..saved only for the quality of the packaging itself and the excellent 'Eye For An Eye' video.
Wasn't impressed too much with the CD however the problem seems to have been unintentionally taken care of.....have changed company cars and unfortunately (or fortunately) forgot to remove the CD from the car stereo.

It is a 2disc cd with the UNKLE fabric mix on one disc and some collaberation with the Scratch Perverts on the other!
I assume the fabric mix is different to the fabric01 mix?
Can anyone supply me with more info please, I may have to buy this if ii is unreleased or rare stuff!!!!

"This is a brand new UNKLE Soundscape DJ Mix, fresh off the incredible success of the "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Beats?" and "Big Brother Is Watching" collections. This is a 2 full length CD set of original UNKLE material. One disc is the highly coveted "UNKLE at Fabric" megamix, while the second features a very rare live performance from 1999, featuring incredible turntable artistry from UNKLE front-man James Lavelle and the Scratch Perverts. Elaborate deluxe double Digipak packaging in full color, displaying intense, original artwork by the one and only FUTURA 2000."
It sounds like stuff I already own just being re-released under a cheeky bootleg. James Lavelle featuring the Scratch Peverts Mix was featured on the last CD of "Cream 2" and the other just sounds like the Fabric mix.

Mine just been posted, so I'll give it a listen and put a post on here when I receive it (probably in about 2 weeks time...).
Any chance someone can post a tracklisting from this album, asuming there is one - if not just a rough idea of some tracks that are on it. Interested in getting this but wont bother if i dont know the tracklist having almost been caught out by Big Brother which was simply a re-jig of the superior Do Androids Dream. Also Lavelle's got a new Global Underground album out next month featuring a lot of Unkle tunes and remixes and i'd hate to buy this album only to find most of the tracks feature on the forthcoming GU mix.

Just thinking... The UNKLE at Fabric mix might be the "Throwdown" mix that was given away to the punters at the launch night of Never, Never Land. It was a 40 minute mix of about 7 or 8 recent remixes they had done for other people, mixed by UNKLE (probably Lavelle). This is a top mix!
The "Live Performance" may be the Radio One live broadcast from their One In The City performance from Oxford (I think it was Oxford back in '99). This too was a top performance, and was also about 40 minutes.
Just guessing

Anyone have any info on the Never Never Land Revisited set that PLAY have for preorder?
Fat Man Hackett
31-08-2004, 15:02
From the UNKLE77 website:
Never Never Land is finally to be released in the US.
The initial release date with 26th October, but this may well be changed.
This release will finally let 'No Pain, No Gain' see the light of day.
The U.S. release will feature a bonus CD of remixes. And though the release date is only two months away, Lavelle is toying with the idea of adding new, original material, including collaborations with the Cult's Ian Astbury and Queens of the Stone Age producer Chris Goss.
Perhaps the 2nd CD of the US release will be the "revisited" disc, although it might be worth just buying the US version of the album...

Thanks a bunch, ace_uk :notworthy
I can't remember where I got these from, but here they are anyway... :)
that looks useful, but how do i use those files to split up the MP3s? what software do i need to use?
Mr Chefs Salad
01-09-2004, 12:33
paste them into a txt file then rename the file eg. blahblah.CUE
The should be an option in your burning software to burn as CUE.
kjmacphee
01-09-2004, 13:04
EAC will do it as well. Decompress the MP3 to a WAV files and then use the .CUE to create the individual MP3s in EAC.
Mr Chefs Salad

^ thats the advice you want for burning them onto an ipod
(forget mine)
Just thinking... The UNKLE at Fabric mix might be the "Throwdown" mix that was given away to the punters at the launch night of Never, Never Land. It was a 40 minute mix of about 7 or 8 recent remixes they had done for other people, mixed by UNKLE (probably Lavelle). This is a top mix!
I think the throwdown mix is the best UNKLE one out there. The intro is soooo good.
Not keen on the Gin mix, although the last track is cool. The other two from Do Androids Dream are good though.
The Shadow In Tune and on Time cd is excellent. Not so keen on the private repress, the soulwax mix is good, as is the track by z-trip.
Just to resuurect this thread :D
I forgot about this thread! :)
In Tune and On Time is absolutely brilliant. Love watching the DVD time and again and listening to the CD as well. So cool to hear all the track mixed up together, with many changes, new samples etc.
I also recently got the extrememly limited edition Radiohead remix picture disc from www.djshadow.com - featuring a US politician (Rumsfeld (sp?) / Cheney ???) as the devil. Woohoo. They are already fetching up to £100 on ebay but I think I might just keep mine :)
damn you :D
I love the ikkle dj bit in the middle with a bit of 'what's golden' in it, and a sample fatboy slim sample.
A friend played by James Lavelle's Global Underground the other day and I have to say I was severely disappointed. There are one or two absolutely brillian tracks on it, but the rest seems like mainstream dance music..the good ones I think are
Reign: UNKLE
In A State: UNKLE
Where are these from, by the way? Are they on Never, Never Land by any chance?

Why buy, when you can download. I don't think I can get in trouble for saying this, as it's going to be another "bootleg" that you can no doubt buy in HMV, and the band will not make any money from this. If you go to http://www.unkle77.com/ you can download a number of UNKLE "bootleg" MP3's.
If this is against T&C's, I apologise, and will happily edit this post.

I would guess they're not actually bootleg at all, but its Mo-Wax releasing them annonymously so they don't have to get permission to use all the tracks mixed.
'Edit Music For a Film - After Dark Prologue' was given away free at some gig UNKLESounds did at the NFT a couple of months ago I think or so I was led to believe anyway I could be wrong.

HMV have got the US release of Never, Never Land in stock. I got mine todat from the Birmingham Bull Ring store. £18, but lush packaging! It contains 2 discs, the first being the album with a couple of new tracks (It may be a different mix of the album, but I'll try and check it out this week), and the second disc contains remixes.
Also, coming soon: www.mowaxarts.com/unkle77

The only thing I've heard lately is a bit of a non-event, really. Apparently, Zach De La Rocha's album will be out in December, and none of the tracks that he worked on with Josh will feature. The album will be completely produced by Trent Reznor.
:(

Entroducing (Deluxe Edition)
The Private Press (Exclusive Tour Edition)
The Private Repress
The Outsider (currently on pre-order)
Brainfreeze
Product Placement
Diminishing Returns
I trust there will not be a special edition of the Outsider..has there been any news on this? I do not want to get the cd only to find a special edition is due!
What other titles are a MUST for any Shadow fan? (I have asked about Pre-Emptive Strike in the post above this one!)
I am also trying to find Funky Skunk for a decent price!
Cheers for your help guys....what would I do without these forums? (apart from have more money on my wallet!)

To be honest I think the album is mostly terrible. The hip hop stuff is awful IMO - very electronic with hardly any "turntablism", sampling and scratching etc. which is what makes Shadow so good IMO...
There are a couple of UNKLE-esque tracks on there with vocals - but they're of the quality of some of the poorer UNKLE offerings.
Very disappointed overall...I like Track 2 - but to be honest, there are no others on the album that are anything like it - neither is it very "Shadow" TBH - bit of a mixed bag of styles with the hip-hop stuff being godawful if truth be told...
Just deleted it from both my Zen and PC's drive...:(
i think the hip hop is bad, the rest is passable, maybe good if it grows. i don't really want to rush and buy a ticket for live though....

There is an imminent new UNKLE album?
‘The Future Is Unwritten’ due in early 2007.
"The Future Is Unwritten’ sounds like the completion of some sort of trilogy; “It’s rawer [than ‘Psyence Fiction’ and ‘Never, Never, Land’] although it’s more in the vain of the traditional singer/songwriter. If the first record was UNKLE does hiphop and the second record was UNKLE does electronic, then this one is like UNKLE does rock, but it’ll hopefully still have its continuity."

New UNKLE album is out in September (Is Lavelle beginning to take the ****?)
UNKLE is about to release a 4CD titled Self Defence. It's a collection of remixed and reconstructed tracks from the studio album Never Never Land and some unreleased material. This is not the first re-issue of NNL but propably the most elaborate. It's set to hit the streets in September.
www.unkle.com has had a revamp and has a few snippets from the album, which are sounding really great

I'm probably way out of touch but I've got the first two albums (though not the 2 CD of the 2nd) and intend to get the 3rd, plus the 3 CD Unklesounds Do Androids Dream of Electric Beats?, then there's a bunch of stuff I 'obtained' which I'm not sure if come from anything genuine as they seem to be varied versions of the existing albums plus some odd mixes and singles I don't know where they came from (one is Ape Shall Never Kill Ape which is a single I believe though where I got it, it claimed it was on Never, Never, Land :suspect: ).
Guess you pre-ordered the new album to get the 3 CDs? Missed that and it appears that's the only (legit) way of getting the 3rd CD.

I believe that the future is unwritten did become War Stories, and yes the only way to get the 3rd War Stories cd was by pre-ordering from the UNKLE web site...apparently they were all deleted once the album was released. But knowing what Lavelle/Unkle are like it be back avaliable again in some super limited box set.
I think that everything that was on the Never Never land bonus disc is now avaliable on the Self Defence discs.
The other mix worth hunting down is the Edit Music For Film, it really is superb!

Listen to War Stories today and not so hot on it. Okay it's first listening and it may grow on me, but it's not Unkle at all. It's just pop/rock stuff. As pop/rock it's quite nice (in an 'Air' or 'Daft Punk' kind of way I'd say), but it's not what I'd hoped for. Bit too generic really.
Also got Self Defence. Now this is much better. Despite being a load of remixes of the same stuff, it's pretty cool and I could listen to it endlessly.
Do you have James Lavelle's DJ mixes? He has a couple for Global Underground and at least one for Fabric.
Apparently its the Scratch Perverts that do all his Mix Albums, I'm with DeadKenny, don't like War Stories at all

Well, "War Stories" is pretty much a rock album - in fact, it probably rocks more than a lot of proper rock albums. I don't think it's great all the way through, but there are some fine tracks on it and it's certainly better than the 2nd LP.

I've got to say, I love the 'War Stories' album and can happily listen to it from start-to-finish without wanting to hit the skip button. I know it's a different direction musically, but to me, it still has that definite UNKLE 'feel' that I think is present on all their albums.

I love Never, Never, Land. Possibly more than Psyence Fiction. Both I feel at the moment are a lot better than War Stories. It's not that it's bad, it's just nothing like Unkle and nothing particularly special for a rock album anyway.
Just found the track list for the 3rd CD and they've got a remix of Muse's Supermassive Black Hole! Damn

BUMP....
UNKLE have a new album (of sorts)out in the next month...it's called End Titles.
http://www.unkle77.com/
James Lavelle on End Titles:
“This is not the new UNKLE album. It is a collection of pieces of music recorded in the two years since we completed “War Stories”….
….A lot of the music you’re making ends up sitting on the shelf, neither properly released nor heard. A waste, really we thought. So this album is our attempt to alleviate our musical frustrations whilst hoping that it will find a wider audience……
….So not a new album in the usual sense, but new music that has been inspired by the moving image.”
I already have it pre-ordered, and will no doubt be suckered into tracking down the limited Japanese version with bonus tracks (like I did for War Stories)

Lavelle has certainly emptied my bank account recently...

Another new album due out soon....
Since "End Titles", there was a remix EP "Remix Stories" and now there is "Redux"...an orchestral album...it'll be limited to 3000 copies and hopefully will have a similar vibe to Against The Grain from "End Titles"...
Seeing as "End Titles" caused barely a ripple in this thread..I'm not expecting too many responses, but hey, I'm looking forward to it.

I guess James Lavelle and Pabs are not among the forum favourites!
End Titles...Redux really is a wonderful album....very epic and sounds great live!
Surely someone here likes them and has bought this Limited Edition!
UNKLE releases End Titles... Redux as a limited collector's edition of 3000 CDs that will only be available via UNKLE.com. This will also be available digitally from the 14th of December 2008. The release will feature seven re-interpreted tracks from the album End Titles... Stories for Film, two new tracks and Trouble in Paradise (Variation on a Theme).
The album was inspired by working and continuing to be involved with the composer Philip Sheppard, who played cello on End Titles... Stories for Film. Many of his original recordings did not make it onto the final album tracks. UNKLE felt there was an opportunity to further work with the orchestral parts, adding new arrangements and remixing to allow a more ambient sound to come through. This has resulted in a predominantly classical body of work.
UNKLE has always worked with classical musicians. In the last four years this has happened more frequently. For the Trouble in Paradise track a 48 piece orchestra was specially recorded. Many of these instruments have been used in the writing and construction of the End Titles…Stories for Film and End Titles... Redux releases.
During this process James Lavelle was approached to get involved in a very special programme of Music and Film at Union Chapel called Marginalized. A charity event in aid of and supporting Margins Project, Union Chapel's in house charity for people who are homeless or in crisis in London.
As a result the album will be performed by The Heritage Orchestra on the 18th December at Union Chapel. UNKLE has previously worked with the Heritage Orchestra at their Somerset House show in July 2008.
Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones are currently working on ideas for how the show will be visually presented. They are regarded as two of the Photographic industry's leading influential creative's and innovators in contemporary image making with a portfolio of international clients from the worlds of fashion, music, portraiture and advertising. They recently collaborated with Alexander McQueen on the art direction for his Spring/Summer 2008 show in Paris; creating a transforming light form installation as a centrepiece for the show.

Looking for a couple of remixes, but cannot find them anywhere...anyone know where I can get these (preferebly on CD)
Surrender Sounds Session #8 Dubfire - I Feel Speed
Surrender Sounds Session #13 Danny Elfman - The Little Things
Neither have been on commercial or promo CD apparently but are on iTunes (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=55) for starters. You can purchase the Dubfire mix in WAV format from Juno (http://www.juno.co.uk/search/?quick_search_records=m_download&q=dubfire+feel+speed&qs=1&s_search_precision=any&s_search_type=all&s_genre_id=0000).
Lavelle has been posting in his blog that they are in the studio again with a GU DJ mix and another U.N.K.L.E. album due this year; no sign of slowing down the release schedule to concentrate on raising the quality bar, sadly.

The new album 'Where Did The Night Fall' arrived today...not had a chance to listen to it yet, but the limited edition 2 cd set is packaged beautifully. It also came with a bonus 70minute third cd...a 'def mix' by Pabs which will hopefully be another winning mix by him!

Not over impressed with the new album and i'm one of the few that liked the last one.
I don't even think the BBC drama dept will be using it that much for cop show soundtracks either. (fortunatly they've just discovered the XX)
