I have connected my Pioneer DVD player to the Toshiba 36ZT29B IDTV which supports Dolby Digital using a coaxial lead.

However I am unable to get true dolby digital surround sound. When I try to adjust the Dolby Digital Settings, to my surprise the menu option is not there. I have Dolby Pro-Logic, Dolby 3, Some DSP Stuff & Psudo Surround, but no Dolby Digital Menu Option.

When I spoke to the Toshiba helpline, they were as expected, of no use.

Any Advice would be grateful

Note:
DVD Connections:

Audio - Coaxial Lead to TV Dolby Digital Input
Visual - S-VHS Cable to TV (Ext 3)

All settings are correct (As verified by Toshiba Helpline) and I can hear the audio (but not in 5.1).

Anyone had simliar issues.

Err, why post twice

Anyway, have you set your DVD to output the signal as Dolby Digital? It could be the DVD is only sending a stereo signal through the cable, not 5.1 discrete.

Scart set up with digital1 and all the that ?

5.1 settings only appear when there's a signal

Thanks for the hints, I will check the DVD settings, however the front panel on my Pioneer DVD player has the Dolby Digital Icon illuminated, so I assumed all was correct on the DVD. I will check in the manual.

I will try and get a fibre link for "digital 1" set-up and try that arrangement.

Sorry, forgot how it was numbered, if its right in the menu, any lead should work.

One thing is that my player has some bitstream/pcm option, and needs to be set as bitstream.

Thanks again, I'll see about the PCM/bitstream

To get proper dolby digital 5.1 when using the coaxial input and dvd connected to the RGB Scart (ext 1) on my Tosh 36ZT29B setup, I have to change 'digital input - 2' (from Features menu then AV connections) to 'Ext 1' so that the TV match the visuals from EXT 1 (DVD) to the DD stream via coaxial cable to DI-2.

Hope that helps if you haven't already tried that. :)

The problem was due to my DVD Player setting (PCM/Bit Stream).

With the correct setting , all was well.
