We at Area 450 would really appreciate some inside shots of this player, especially a close up of the processor board and the loader. Do you have a screwdriver and a digicam handy ? If so, please send the shots to me at clayts@area450.com

I can't promise a hack, but it might be possible to head in the right direction (ie whether it's a remote hack or something more sinister).

It may be a Sampo in disguise, but we really need a good luck at the internals. Sampo made the last budget entry player (DV740) for Sharp, as they are a major shareholder in Sampo.

I've noticed that the serial numbers (usually starting 20xxxxx or 21xxxxx) are in line with the most recent Sampo serial numbers, and they are made in China (Sampo have a factory in Shanghai) : it could well be an obscure clone of the Taiwan-sold DV-M28 deck :)

For starters, could you try OPEN on the remote, then 3,3,0,8,8,0 then note whether R0 pops up on screen ? I doubt it'll work, but it's worth a shot !

Cheers Clayts.

Being a complete newbie with DVDs, I'm not that keen to open her up to take a couple of photos - is there another way to find out if it's a Sampo in disguise?

I'll let you know if the hack works.

In the old days it was easy : you could spot a Sampo a mile off from the casing. If only it were that simple these days :(

So, to answer your question, there ain't no way of knowing unless someone pops the hood on their deck :)
