I have been waiting a long time as the same of others. This is the only decent thing tonight to watch.

I used to think this was brilliant but don't you think that recently it got just a little too much about Sipowicz and in particular the amount of bad luck the guy has. Everything else is excellent but this started to grate a little.

Ahh - but a pen and paper can't record Sipowicz smacking up a "perp".

And I get a particularly warm feeling inside when he does that.

Like greeting an old friend.

Appropriate that C4 are showing it after "Buried" as that’s what they’ve done with the show in regards to the time-slot.

Is it still going in the States or has it finished?

Also I wonder how NYPD Blue dealt with Sept 11. I kept seeing the twin towers in tonight's episode.

Jill Kirkendall fled with her son after Don tried to force her to do something to help him out (so long ago, memory a bit hazy).

Glad to see Andy in a good mood for once after his son got the all-clear, his happy mood was very amusing. However, I thought the way they dealt with the whole IAB invesitgation was a bit of a cop-out on the writing front - Denby lead is a dead-end, loads of opportunities for them to be corrupt to get away with the problems, but being so pure none do it. Then he gets bumped off anyway!

BTW, did Danny leave his girlfriend at his flat whilst he went off to Rikers and then on to jump Diane?

The IAB thing was a copout - and they didn't pursue Danny's jealous anger of Denby let alone the potential for corruption.

Denby wasn't bumped off. Jill's ex-husband was bumped off.

Yeah, there were a load of shots of the WTC in the first episode too. Season 8 was shown on US TV from Jan to May 2001, and Season 9 started showing in Nov 2001.

I guess we'll see shots all through this season, and then nothing in Season 9. Assuming we get Season 9.

I wonder if they refer to Sept 11. I mean it is set in NY and the tragedy of Sept 11 was huge for the real NYPD, so it would be odd if they just ignored it.

Anyone else think Danny Sorensen was just behaving like a spoilt brat, all that pouting and sulking? Excellent speech by Andy at the end, but I wonder if he will truly wash his hands of him?

And Denby, was that suicide by cop? I am pretty sure he wanted to die, and getting Diane involved just meant that he could have his last mess with her head.

jonathan.e
05-03-2003, 07:41
The whole Sorensen thing unfortunately smacks too much of a storyline written purely because the actor concerned wants to leave. It’s kind of a betrayal of the character as it’s difficult to believe he would have acted so recklessly.

Still, a fine episode but it’s just a shame that C4 treat it like crap and bury it near midnight.

That was what I thought - Sorenson has not come across as that type of character, a bit prone to emotional involvement maybe but not as violent and unhinged as they suddenly made him. Plus it all happened in the space of a couple of episodes - Diane gave him the flick, he went all sulky and then went postal. Like you say, lazy writing.

I think his "friend" - Nicholas the homeless guy being killed after he promised to protect him was also meant to be part of what pushed him over the edge.....

caygs
05-03-2003, 20:18
I think that is part of what jonathan.e means is wrong - I could understand him going off at a close friend or a regular character, but that homeless guy came and went in one episode. Bit hard to believe they had that much of a connection.

8-]
05-03-2003, 21:49
The thing is that he was pretty distraught at the Russell thing going wrong (he tried to help her, got entangled, used and spat out), and because of that he latched onto Nicholas and used that to give himself something positive to work on. When that disappeared within a day of him trying to help he pretty much lost it.....

Ben Martin
11-03-2003, 20:21
they didn't have that much of a "connection" but that's danny for you. the kind way he behaved towards nicholas and his subsequent doing all the wrong things for all the right reasons is him to a tee, as anyone who's a long-time viewer of the show will know.

trying to protect those people in life who he perceives as vulnerable, to the point of smothering them, is just part of who he is. seems to have a lot to do with his past, of which we've only had glimpses.

i might have found it unrealistic if i was just a casual viewer, but in the context of the show it was bang on the money for me.

on a side note, my season 01 box set turned up today and it's absolutely unbelieveable. such a superbly designed set, it's a real treat. just about to watch the first episode now - taking me back to one saturday night in january 1994! :)

and there's a sweet surprise inside, but i won't give it away.

i see the date for season 02 is now august 19th, earlier than the 'sept 03' indicated inside the packaging of the first season. perfect for me, as if i keep to the one episode a week i've managed so far, and ********* deliver one week early again, i won't miss a beat. woo-hoo! :)

andy and greg are indeed the only two 'long-serving' cast members left. and andy is the only original cast member. in fact, half of the original cast were gone by the fourth episode of the second season! greg doesn't count because he wasn't officially a regular until season 02. he first appears in the third episode of the first season and isn't credited in the main credits. watched that episode last week and then was rather pleased at how much continuity there was between that episode and the 'new' one on C4 last night.

there have been quite a few changes and additions to the cast this season, but it's a credit to the show the way they've eased them in and made the transition feel natural and make logical sense in the ongoing 'story' of the 15th squad.

i was wondering ... anyone think that C4 might go straight to season 09 after the last episode of this season? i can see reasons for and against but i know we'd all love it!

EDIT: why are the post times wrong? has the server not been adjusted for BST?

true, but the longer this goes on the less i am personally bothered by it. i'd rather the show was on earlier so that more people watched it. but for me, it being on so late encourages me to tape it and the slight loss in quality is certainly worth being able to skip the adverts. i almost watched it last night and then thought, "what? am i stupid? why purposefully waste 10 minutes of my life?!".

though obviously not comparing the two shows, this has also been the best thing about watching smallville on downloads from the net this year rather than on C4. so far, over 16 episodes i've saved almost 4 hours on adverts.

i only wish NYPD Blue were so easy to get hold of.

But as long as they continue to air Blue I don't really mind atm,it's

Well not a bad episode, though I was a bit confused by the parents of the two kids who killed the delivery driver. Rather than facing up to the actions of the kids, they seemed more concerned with accusing a black police officer of betraying his race

Radiohead
30-04-2003, 21:13
I agree - although maybe it was trying to highlight one race expecting some sort of favour from "one of their own".....?

The bit I found very interesting was the point made about the father's attitude towards the Korean and the detective making the comparison between "what white trash would say about us".

Ben Martin
30-04-2003, 21:55
at the end of the day, the boy's father and the girl's grandmother were overly sympathetic and biased towards their own offspring, as any parent would be. both felt deliberately misled once they realised that the context had changed to one that had serious implications for the kids.

singing from a different hymn sheet when it looked like the kids would be sleeping at home that night, there were double standards in both cases. the grandmother was outraged that the unintentional nature of the crime essentially carried no weight, and that the detectives stayed stum on the probable outcome in order to clear the case. the boy's father, however, was guilty of both shamefaced double standards on the race issue and of expecting preferential treatment from another "brother".

baldwin highlights a few home truths for him and basically makes it clear that it's about right and wrong, law and order versus disorder - intentional or otherwise, regardless of race, colour or creed. and we all know he's right, including the father. the only thing left is the question that surely baldwin has some sympathy for the kids that he can't let the parents see? surely he's not a robot (especially after that superb scene with the rookie beat cop last week)? and then this is deftly dealt with immediately afterwards in the scene in the coffee room with ADA Heywood.

"It stings a lot."

He's turning into a great character as well - very likeable and a great foil for Greg's excesses.

Am I right in thinking that Diane resigns from her job shortly - the shot of Danny outside her apartment at the very end of this week's episode shows that, despite what he says, there's more to come between them - and it won't be good

If we're 2 years behind the US, does anyone know whether they changed the program in anyway following 9/11 ? I notice that there's always at least 1 shot of the twin towers in each episode.

Ben Martin
02-05-2003, 16:48
we are literally 2 years behind the US. i.e. the episode that screened on C4 on tuesday night, 29th april 2003, was first screened by ABC on 24th april 2001. there are 4 episodes to go in season 8 and the last of those was first screened in the US on 22nd may 2001.

hence, when all of season 8 was screened, let alone when it was filmed, 9/11 had yet to happen. the first two episodes of season 9 were screened on 6th november 2001. but i'd imagine that they had pretty much completed at least 6 episodes by then, i.e. plots and dialogue may not reflect 9/11 straight away, if at all. that said, i'm sure we'll hear some mention of it somewhere along the way in season 9. after all, it aims to be a realistic show and cops were of course hugely affected by the incident.

EDIT: as usual, i talk about too many things in one post and have split them up for easy reading!
presuming you all care, of course! :p

I know what you're saying Ben, but I don't have any problem with spoilers as long as they're tagged.

:)

Ben Martin
03-05-2003, 18:24
taking note of the chat at the top of this page, i don't think we should post any spoilers on here, tagged or otherwise, if anyone does know the answer to this speculation and/or what might be said about it by the characters. on a similar note to the stuff posted above about upcoming episodes - why discuss it here? not having a go at anyone here by any means, especially as spoiler tags were used, i just don't see why it's necessary given the context. that context being that everyone who posts on here regularly hasn't seen beyond C4's broadcasting of NYPD Blue. it's not like this is some show like 24 that is massively popular on both sides of the atlantic, that we're not far behind and that has a thriving 'download' following.

anyway, not wishing to start an argument. not least because i actually found out the information posted above by accident at some point during the wilderness period that C4 imposed on us. just my two-penneth. :)

Ben Martin

on the issue of C4 going straight to season 9...

it gets my vote, although i can't see it happening. but i also want to see episode #142 Who Murders Sleep from season seven. broadcast in the US on 7th march 2000, it has yet to be shown by C4 due to "similarities" with the sarah payne incident. come on C4 - show some spine. get it on!

Ben Martin
05-05-2003, 16:44
just downloaded the current episode of nypd blue from the newsgroups. season 10, episode 19 - "meet the grandparents".

now, i obviously wasn't going to watch it, and haven't, but seeing as it was in widescreen (from the HDTV broadcast - god, we're living in the stone age over here) i was curious to check the opening credits out. as it happens it reverts to 4:3 (within the 16:9 frame) for the credits, but i thought, "hey, watch the 'previously...', it won't mean anything to you."

error. i inadvertently encountered two, arguably three, major spoilers. and that's not including the one at the top of this page.

d'oh! oh well, i'll get over it by the time the episodes are on C4! one thing though - it felt a bit freaky, like i was watching a different show. and before 'previously...' there was the following message, both on screen and read out by a guy with a deep voice:

"This police drama contains adult language. Viewer discretion is advised." :D

btw, also downloaded 10x18 and will continue to hunt for others in case we all end up needing them.

personally, i'd go for the R1 every time. not knocking the R2, it's a great release, but i don't like having the BBFC logos plastered all over packaging, and compared to the stylish cardboard gate-fold R1 the amaray cases look kind of clunky.

(pics removed)

ah ... look at those clutter-free discs! no BBFC and irish ratings board logos (and the rest)!! the clear plastic elements look a bit tacky in these pics due to the reflections. rest assured they look way better in reality.

But many thanks anyway,

I have done this many times forgetting that certain programmes are on and even forgetting to set my video. So i input my programmes a week in advance there i do not forget. But one thing for sure it is not always successfull as you have not enought tape or you have not engaged the timer but my JVC has this permanetly on.

I remember watching it on CH4 when they first started showing it years ago.....

I really liked it despite it having Caruso in it .... he wasn't quite as annoying back then as he is now though.

Bloody typical isn’t it. Any other time they’re blabbing all over the credits ("pleeeeease don’t turn over") but when they could have imparted some useful information they remain silent.

says it all. and it's this attitude that spurs me on to finding as many episodes online as possible.

obviously no specifics on here as i have this unsettling feeling that i'm on two strikes (minor and completely by accident, but hey...) and one more will lose me my post-count!

but what are we supposed to do? if C4 won't show it then there is no other way. and who would we be depriving of revenue?

dunkrag
28-05-2003, 21:54
The fact that CH4 made no mention of a new series last night leads me to strongly believe that we will never see NYPD again on terrestrial.

I wiped a tear away as Sipowitz sat with Theo at the end of last nights episode. I can only hope that Fox get around to releasing all seasons on DVD but I have my doubts about that too. Anyone know how season one is selling?

Looking at the C4 forums, C4 viewer enquires say that they don't yet have scheduled air dates for seasons 9 & 10, suggesting that they do have the rights at least.....

yes, if season nine starts on C4 in january we will be two and a half seasons behind. if the US schedule sticks to the same pattern as this season, then they will be showing 11x12 on the same night we are getting 9x01 !!

Heres an update on S2 R1 boxset :

Due on August 19th is NYPD Blue: The Complete Second Season. The 6-disc set comes with fullscreen transfers, English Dolby Digital 4.0 Surround, French 2.0 Mono, and Spanish 2.0 Surround tracks. Extras include audio commentaries on the episodes "Cop Suey" and "ADA Sipowicz" by Director Mark Tinker, "Vishy-Vashy" by Director Michael Rob, "Bombs Away" and "Boxer Rebellion" by Technical Advisor Bill Clark. Other bonus features include featurettes (Season Two: A Season of Change, Wedding Bell Blues, The Music of Mike Post) and Script to Screen Comparisons (Sipowicz Meets Simone, Sylvia Meets Simone, Simone and Sipowicz Bond).

My order is already in.

Ben Martin
02-06-2003, 16:49
cheers for the info, wdragna. my order is likewise in, and has been for about 6 weeks now! :)

two things i hope we get this time around that aren't mentioned above:

- "previously..." segments that actually play!
- the ability to watch the episode with "previously..." attached to the episode.

as far as the latter goes - i'm a hardcore fan, but even i like to be reminded of past events related to the episode in question, especially when some of them happened ages ago, or even in previous seasons. the lack of this 'non-feature' on the S01 set really hacks me off.

anyone able to verify the problems referred to in the first point? these segments foul up on both my pc and on other standalones i've tested them on. keep meaning to check the home theater forums for a thread but i always forget.

it's certainly a possibility mate, given the way things are going with C4. no, wait ... have been going with C4 for the last 3 years!

that said, best we steer clear of all such discussion on here as the mods are , rightly, particularly touchy about it. other threads have been closed down for the forums being used as a tool to swap info for downloading, even if download locations were not mentioned.

i like my post-count the way it is! and someone i know surely doesn't want his reset to zero again?! ;) :D

so it's  to any potentially illicit discussion here!

Fantastic drama and another great DVD set. Good 60 min doco as well and good to see most of the main players featured in new interview. Jimmy Smits is the only one missing (as well as Caruso, obviously).

Also, how stunning is Gail O'Grady in the interviews???!! :luv: :luv: . She never looked that good on the show. :suspect: :D
