Is this Birmingham City I see below me?? ;) excellent result - much rejoicing in my house... though Worcester City are doing their usual lets not bother with the last few matches... :(

It was an excellent performance by Villa today. I thought McCann in particular was fantastic but it's hard to single out any one player as there were so many good performances.

Wow great win today. Agreed about Super Gav but I think that the team won today. Everyone played for each other and for the majority of the game we played some great stuff and scored 2 superb goals. DOL and King Olof,

Nope. It's just that I'd prefer to see Charlton, Villa or Fulham qualify for the CL instead of Liverpool or Newcastle.
Be great if we did get 4th spot. Think we'll need to win 4 out of the 5 remaining matches - including the one against Newcastle to do it though.
3 of the matches in the run in are at home (Newcastle, Spurs, Man U) and the away ones are against Southampton and Boro which is not too bad IMHO.
Clarkey - Betfair forum
Heard some very disturbing reports tonight, that O'leary is red hot favourite to become the new Liverpool manager next season.
Apparently,he has been offered the job,but is waiting for legal advice on his Villa contract, but has said yes,in principle.
Dont like the sound of that..........
.

Think today's result pretty much puts paid to our Champ League aspirations. Really needed to win and had ideal opportunity against 10 men. :|

GOt there in the end but would have been better not bothering. Dirt Newcastle stiffled the game. SHearer reminded us all why we hate him and the ref was inept. The lads were appaulling, hitz and lee went missing and barry couldn't trap the ball. well played UDCL, Olof the great and Ronny though.
Mandrill

I throught the ref was pretty good and DLC was poor going forward but sound at the back.
Could have done with McCann in midfield to allow Hitz more freedom
The ref made a really big call in sending O'Brien off soo early and seemed to regret it for the whole match, shearers tackle on Mellberg was a disgrace, Speed quite clearly elbowed Hendrie, and Givens timewasting was only punished when showing a Yellow card meant nothing (2 mins added time to play).
In all it was a typical Villa performance where we struggle to break teams down and I said @ half time i could see it staying 0-0.
UDLC was hopeless going forward, and his crossing could have been bettered by my 18 month old son!! but all that said he was pretty solid at the back apart from a couple of rash tackles!
Bellamy pulling his hamstring was greeted by cheers from the Holte end followed by a number of us looking for the sniper in the crowd!!
Oh well a great chnce gone begging for us, all the teams around us had bad results and playing against 10 men for 80 minutes should have enabled us to capitalise!
Same old Villa, all the results went for us yesterday and this was our chance to win and take 4th spot. I think with Angel and McCann we would have done it but after the sending off Newcastle just defended and stifled the game make it pretty much a non event. Had 0-0 all over it really.
Win at Villasboro next week is a must!! ;)

.. Who would have believed this season eh !!!!!
DOL has proved that he ain't a cheque book manager and has got a great team spirit down VP.
For god sake Ellis .. back the man in the close season. we need to move forward and not let us slip behind the knuckle draggers again
Its in our own hands now if we win our last 2 games we get into europe simple as that.
Up the villa
As a Man United fan, I'm hoping you lot get the 4th place, and that we put out our reserves in the final game. For me, David O'Leary deserves to be named manager of the year for the simply stunning transformation he's produced in your team, without spending any/much money. From being relegation dogfighters to contenders for the champions league is just amazing.

There is some quality in the side - DOL has put his faith in the young 'uns and they have paid off - with a great team spirit and with others commenting on our footy, all looks well, but we all know that Wenger is going to get manager of the year.
I think that DOL has set his standards now - lets hope that he keeps them up !!
Does anyone know if Newcastle wining the UEFA cup and then finishing 5th would mean that the UEFA Place drops to 6th??
Just trying to imagine every possible scenario!!!! and the likelihood that we will come 6th!!

We used to have a lot of Euro Places up for grabs, but these seem to have been snaffled for the "lesser" footy nations. However, they did give us an extra "champions" league spot.
Crazy really, especially this fair play nonsense.
The reason we used to get 6th etc. was because the FA Cup Final was usually played between two sides in the top 4-5 anyway (Liverpool v Arsenal etc.) so that's why it moved down a space in the league. We also used to have the Cup Winners Cup etc.
I still think it's shocking that Milwall, who haven't even played a Premiership side this season at all, could end up getting battered by Man U but will still make Europe regardless!
Anyway, come on you Lions on Saturday. I'll be there but if you can't make it, it's on live on foreign satellite, so I would presume the Spencers Arms in Hagley will be showing it live from 3pm.

Hi lads, yeah the Spencers Arms in Hagley (by the car dealers that changes owners each week) had the game on live yesterday. We saw the Chelsea game there. Only missed 4 away this season so am normally at the game but always one to look out for.
As for yesterday we had enough chances but I think it was a bridge too far for us. The Newcastle result was a good one for us today so lets hope Southampton can do us a favour in midweek.
Lee - heard anything about our m8?? Hope all OK

So does anyone know if we will be wearing this against Man Utd on Saturday??? Fulham wore their new away kit on Sunday and i think we have done this in the past as a way of advertising.
Actually on second thoughts I doubt we would be able to wear it, as i expect Rovers sponsorship will include the Man Utd Game.

Right lads, it's in our own hands on Saturday. Win and we are in the UEFA cup next season!!
We could even lose and still get there, providing Newcastle lose also. You wouldn't quite believe this fact though if you read the papers or watch TV.
They were all saying Villa could 'leapfrog' Newcastle into the UEFA cup spot. - Er no!!
They could potentially leapfrog us not the other way round. Makes you sick how they practically ignore us altogether from the league table. Never mind, lets' just hope the Mancs play a reserve side and we can do em to qualify.
Going to be one hell of a day!!
Dublin and Johnson aren't being offered new contracts according to the Villa website.
It will be sad to see dublin go, but in a league where pace is so important he is struggling a bit this season.
Villa vs Man UTD has been chosen as Sky's game for Saturday, so those of you that can't go will still be able to cheer us to Europe *
* fingers and everything else crossable crossed!
I'm sad to see Dublin go although I know it's the right decision. I hope O'Leary gives him a run out tomorrow so we can all say goodbye.
I will be wearing my lucky pants tomorrow... they have not been washed since '82!

Well perhaps Europe was a bridge too far. Outclassed today in the first half - shows us just what we need to make up>
Thanks for a good season lads!! All the best to Dion in the future.
Definately outclassed in the first half today. I hate to say it but they looked like the most powerful opponents we have had all season. I thought we were going to get hammered.
And to the people that got the whole stadium errupting by saying that Liverpool had taken the lead...
I saw Dion after the game tonight. He got absolutely mobbed. Every other player and official had long gone and he still had a huge crowd of autograph hunters around him at almost 7pm! His presence is going to be sadly missed. I hope we can be as strong without him.
A great day out despite the final score.
bad luck but after the start of the season did you think u had a sniff? You have had a big shake up this year and have onlty 12 pro players on the wage bill. With your youth team looking good you should have a bright future but please dont push us howay the lads

We've just bought Danish international defender Laursen from Milan.
26 years old and plenty of experience in Italy as well as 33 caps for Denmark. Looks OK on paper.
Great signing. With him and Olly at the back we are going to be very hard to beat next season. Now we just need a striker to bang in the goals along side Angel. Yakubu has been mentioned. I'd love him, only 21 and scored 16 goals in a poor Pompey side.
I was actually hoping for Viduka or Alan Smith (DOL connections). Failing that Forsell

Spurs lose out to Villa for Milan defender
By Dave Eadevic
All week there had been rumours that AC Milan defender Martin Laursen was about to make a move to the Premership and all week those rumours were that he was going to Spurs, then suddenly last night the move came and he went to........Villa.
A move that not only caught me on the hop but most of the Italian press with the Corrie Della Serra a lone voice in mentioning it as a possible destination in yesterdays edition.
So what will Villa get for their 3 Million? They get a proved international who will be traveling to Portugal with Denmark, they will get a player that should be well rested after falling out of favour at Milan.
But what they will get is an honest hard working defender. I dont think anyone will ever claim he is the best ever, but he is a good buy. I had the pleasure of watching him most weeks when he played for my beloved Verona (before they pressed the self-destruct button) and I liked him a lot. I think he tends to play better with a leadership figure, but if he plays to his potential a wisely spent 3 Million.
This has been banded about on the Heroes and Villains Discussion Board for a few days - glad to see a rumour become a reality.
Some guy on the villa forums is claiming to have inside info :cuckoo: saying that the van bommell deal is far from dead and should go through soon.
Hmm:searchme:
Same guy who mentioned this deal on Monday and also was 1st with the Solano news so may be true.
I was standing by someone who asked Doug Ellis about Van Bommell last Saturday and his response was to laugh and say "watch this space!"
Ooer!

I'm not really I remember Andy Gray commented about Arsenal and thier defence.Toure and Campbell just concentrate on stopping the ball going into he net and give it to the midfield to create attack.
In Mellberg and Lausen we have 2 no nonsense defenders woh will put them themselves in the way of the ball.
What we no wneed is more creativity in midfield to compliment the defence.

Mandrill, I see what you are saying but I believe that we do loose possession needlessly sometimes and there is a great deal of onus put on the central midfielders. Ridgy certainly looked confident on the ball and will be an asset in that department. The problem with the other two is that they may rely on the centre midfielders more tan i'd like

Fastrunner .. welcome to the DVF Villa family - I looked at the packages, and seemed a bit on the expensive side to me, considering that I need Taxis, etc from where I live.
Probably better off at the local and then at the local Chippy.
