I have a dvd hi-fi, with an s-video output, my tv has no s-video socket.
I am using a scart converter at the tv end.
The problem is the picture comes out in black and white.
I have tried it in both tv scart sockets, the tv is only 1 year old and the hi-fi is about 4 months old, any ideas..........
It works fine using the composite lead...
Thanks in advance.

Does you TV actually accept S-Vid via the Scart socket? If so, there will be a setting/button to change the input for that socket. What TV is it?
Is the picture b&w for all region discs (u don't say if its multi-region), cos this is usually what happens when playing NTSC discs ?
Have u selected / can u select S-Video within your DVD Hi-FI menu?, or have u attempted to keep pressing your AV button on the tv to see if u have tried all options (my Sony has quite a few, some color, some b&w)
Or your tv (what make is it?) may not have a function disabled in its setup, or is it possible u have a one-way only cable thats going in the wrong direction (dunno if u would get a picture then??)??
Many things to look in to
Happy hunting

Definately sounds to me like your TV has to be told to accept S-video through the scart (Or doesn't accept it) Consult the manual - that hopefully will solve the prob. If it's - as suggested above - a R1 only thing - changing the DVD player output to PAL60 should solve that one.
Good luck.

the tv is a samsung 28" widescreen plano. My old dvd player worked fine, r1 and r2, that was through normal scart connection though.
The hi-fi is multiregional and I am getting b+w when playing a r2 disc which is the opnly one I have tested so far.
The s-video to scart adapter has a switch on it so you can use it as input or output.
Cannot find a setting to change on the tv, the hi-fi can output in ntsc or pal and I know the tv can accept either.....!!!!!!

Have you got it plugged into AV2? (usually only the second scart on a tv will accept s-vid). If you can't find an option in the tv's menu to activate s-vid, maybe repeated presses of the input selector on the remote will cycle through to the correct setting?

tried in both scart sockets and tried the cycling thing as well.
Even the dvd menu itself without a disk in is in b+w.
Tried a different svideo cable, no joy.
Unless the adapter from svideo to scart has a problem

My TV has 3 AV inputs, 2 Scarts and an S-Video socket.
AV2 (Scart) and AV3 (S-Video), can both be selected to be either 'Video' or 'S-Video' and in 'Video' mode, an S-Video signal comes out in b/w, and in 'S-Video' mode it works fine.
So like the others who have responded to your plight, I think that there must be some way to select S-Video.
Check your manuals carefully, the selection of Video / S-Video on my TV was on a completely different menu to the other settings, including some settings for the Scart / S-Video inputs:confused:
Cheers, Vinny
