The all-new Top Gear - Introduction
The cat's out of the bag, as everything you needed to know about the new Top Gear TV programme is laid bare over the next few pages. So if you've not got a window in your diary at 8pm on Sunday 20 October, make sure you do a quick bit of rescheduling to make sure you don't miss the all-new TV programme.

At the helm will be Jeremy, but there'll be two new faces for you to meet. Not only that but the format will be nothing like anything you've seen before and if you always thought that half an hour was nothing like long enough, your prayers have been answered – because the new show runs for a whole hour.

As you know, we don't do things by halves here at Top Gear, so to accompany the new TV show the magazine is getting a completely fresh look with a new mix of tests, features, news and entertainment. Jeremy will be writing more than ever for the best motoring title on the shelves and the magazine comes with a cast iron guarantee that it'll be a more absorbing read than ever. So make a note in your diary to grab a copy of the new-look Top Gear magazine out on 30 October. That'll be the one with December 2002 as the cover date.

And did we mention the all-new website that's set to launch along with the revamped TV programme? No? Well if you like the current website (which of course you do), we've got something a bit special lined up for you. Set to launch on the same day as the TV programme we've gone and built a website that takes all the best bits of the current offering then builds on them big style. More news, features, reviews and competitions than ever before along with a few new bits and pieces that we won't tell you about just yet. But you won't have to wait long before it's all there for you to see…

Thanks m8 - that's just what I wanted to hear. I'll update the thread title to give the details.

From that URL:

The all-new Top Gear - The JC Q&A

Q You’ve been away from TG for four years, what’s made you choose now to come back?
A It was that, or present a show on cushions

Q Is it right that the new TG format was largely your idea?
A Yes, but my idea was pretty rubbish and would have cost a million, billion pounds a programme to produce. Now some people who know how to make tv programmes have turned it into a much better format

Q Would you call it a chat show with cars or a car show with chat?
A Oh, it’s not a chat show at all. It’s a car show with celebrity guests who like cars

Q Are you older and wiser?
A Older, yes. Wiser? Well, I still don’t know when to shut up

Q But hopefully not any mellower?
A Well, I still call a spade a spade

Q Didn’t think you were that polite?
A I will still speak as I find [said in a Yorkshire accent]

Q You’re making this series in London, not Pebble Mill. Will you miss Birmingham?
A In the same way that you might miss a set of dreary neighbours when you’re off on your holidays

Q You have sold your Ferrari and bought a Mercedes. What are we supposed to read into that?
A That the SL is a bloody good car. And you don’t wince when you get out of a Merc

Q Will we see a change in the Clarkson style in the new show?
A Fewer pauses, I’ve given up smoking, so I can breathe better now

Q And what about a change of image after that makeover show? No more jeans and cowboy boots?
A Cowboy boots went in 1992. I still wear jeans though

Q Are there still bad cars for you to be rude about?
A Several bad ones. Several good ones. And hundreds of useless, average ones

Q And good ones? What snaps knicker elastic at 100 yards these days?
A SL Merc, Porsche Turbo, BMW M3, Evo 7, Citroen Berlingo Multispace

Q Citroen Berlingo Multispace?
A It shows a sensible streak, women like that, and it’s quite funky

Q What will be the best bit of the new show?
A Me

Q And apart from you?
A It will still have fast cars, it’ll still be irreverent and fly in the face of everything that people tell you. Cars aren’t bad things – come on in and enjoy them

As long as Clarkson continues to come out with his usual comments and unustified hatred for some cars - it will still be amusing and worth watching.

Sounds like it could be like "Clarkson the Talk Show" but concentrating on cars.

I agree, why didn't they present a story and finish it before carrying onto another one rather than doing half the story at the start and the rest at the end?

I thourougly enjoyed it, I thought that Zonda was so cool, I like clarkson, I know most people don't, the only thing i have with him is that he tends to slag off normal cars, and loves his sporty type cars, where as most people drive normal cars.

The show went quick for me too!

BBC has been showing a few good programmes recentley.

what car do you think, if any will beat that Zonda's lap time?

I liked the speed camera test too, from now on 170mph for me.

I-BERT
20-10-2002, 22:56
They could have got someone better than the Hybrid of Prince Charles and Alan Partridge to co-host don't you think.I just felt there was something missing though..........like a WOMAN!

Don't the BBC know that Cars+Woman=Veiwers?

Good show though.

P.S I think the new Porcshe could have the Zonda. It will eat those corners.

When I read the 'premise' for the new series I thought it was going to go the same way as Drivel. Thankfully not. I thought it was good. Loads of information, well presented, only one gimmick (the Stig - and it is Stig according to Top Gear mag) and actually about cars! I like it that Jeremy says they are after cars with character. Good, I couldn't agree more. No blandmobiles please :) Laso like it that Richard Hammond is now on a bigger channel than some of the obscure satellite channels. I think he deserves it.

Ha ha, thats true, he does look a little silly stood next to Clarkson. Perhaps why they do that 'news' bit sitting down?

mr bad example
21-10-2002, 10:06
Much better than I expected, though a bit too long - they were stretching items to fill up space in parts. Typical Clarkson irreverent 'I'll-say-what-I-like' tone was the best bit. Newsy bits were good. Somebody ought to tell that co-presenter bloke about that shirt. Worst bit was the Stig gimmick, just schoolboy silly. Just tell us who the driver is, FFS ...

What's the point of a 'live audience' when they just stand around looking vaguely embarrassed and calling out when cued to?

Yep, Enfield is hopeless when he's not in a character and following a script. He doesn't know what to say, but cringingly wants to be liked :(

BTW isn't Driven just dire? the first week was bizarre, then they've just repeated the format every week. The sumo bit is pitifully boring. How can it appeal to the 'Max generation' (if it's meant to) when one presenter looks like your mate's mum who works in the library and another is like your embarassing uncle who thinks he's jack-the-lad though he's pushing on middle age. Spare us

Ron Hill
21-10-2002, 10:59
Loved the show. Having the Berlingo parked next to the Zonda was genius. The Stig hurtling around at ludicrous speed with "Raindrops keep falling.." had me in stitches.

Strange thing is I actually liked the Lambo more than the Zonda. The Zonda is WAY the fastest but the styling of the Lambo makes me weak at the knees and it's plenty fast enough thankyou! :)

Harry Enfield is a bit strange I have to say. Every time I see him interviewed it's like he's a different person. I reckon he must be terminally shy and just throws a different persona on each time he's interviewed.

Thought the short skinny guy worked out AOK on the show. Not so sure about the fat bargain hunter though. Nothing against fat people it's just that he did come across more "Driven" than "Top Gear" IMHO. I'll give him a chance though as the point he raised about the Subaru bargain was good.

Only thing that REALLY narked me was that I nearly missed it due to SKY giving me BBC2 NI as opposed to regular BBC2 UK. Thankfully my old terestrial conection picks up the nationals. Must figure out how to get rid of the crappy NI channels and replace them with the nationals.

Just coz he has dosh to buy fast cars doesn't necessarily mean he'll be a natural great driver. It was alright but still not how I want it.
The other presenters are awful but the short chap is not as irritating as he was on another channel (can't remember which one).
There are still the silly things which Driven would do, such as:

The stupid music being played when you get an incar shot of the mystery driver.

Celebrities: Who needs them?

Next week we'll have old farts showing how fast they can drive round the race track. Who the hell cares

There was too much rubbish being talked and not enough cars being tested.

The audience (what's the point of them in the first place) look bored out of their minds, which I was when Clarkson and the short chap talked rubbish to each other.

I thought that it was going to be rubbish and I was right, but it's still better than Driven.

I hope one day that we can have a simple car programme (which top gear was ten years ago) where they test cars and comment on issues of the day and that's it. I don't want the other crap that goes with it.

Can`t really see that happening.

That would mean the old shape.....which I prefer anyway.....would be worth more than the newer style.

If a manufacturer cuts the price of a model.....it`ll affect the residuals of the whole range....old and new bodystyles.

Impreza`s have become £3k cheaper overnight.....I may be tempted to buy one has a 2nd car.

Yes and the reason for this? They have become cheaper for one simple reason and that is that the new shape (MY03) is due very soon. So effectively you are getting a soon to be obsolete car.

I do however feel sorry for purchasers of the current bug-eye shape and think that Subaru should offer some sort of reimbursement on this vehicle.

That said the classics are still holding their value, more so than most other cars in the same league.

You want one as a second car? You must have more money than sense as they cost a fortune to run.

Plus I wouldn't call it a second car over an Integra Type R.

VBH and Tiff have their own show on Channel 5 though - 5th gear.

That Zonda was magnificent but costing twice as much as the £/$(?)160k Lambo it bloomin' well should be.

I was just amazed at the size of the Ford GT40's rear tyres, admittedly the presenter isn't the tallest guys, but the wheel was still up to his waist! Huuuuge! And what a car, gorgeous inside - a real demonstration of American, over enthusiastic, muscle car excess. For goodness sake! A remote control, electric hatch for the petrol cap! :notworthy

Harry Enfield just looks ill. Old and ill, he looks like he has a terminal disease - shave that bonce mate!

I like the Granny competition though, I'm currently trying to borrow my Nan's dress and make up to get on the show and set a fast lap!! ;)

I saw the first episode again today (at a friend's place) and can answer two of the questions in this thread:

They definitely called the unnamed driver "The Stig" everywhere - some of them just inunciate better than onthers.

Also they will be using the same Suzuki car with every celebrity.

Pretty good again IMO this is the best of the big 3 car show's (Driven and 5th gear being the other 2).

Also did anybody see the car show program on BBC1 about 3.30 Sunday.Damon Hill took a Merc (90 grand coupe not sure of exact name) round a track with one of the presenter's and the presenter got sick out the window   Hill also went over a crest and had all 4 wheel off the road very impressive.

Yeah I saw that. He was really punishing that merc... :notworthy: the poor presenter totally lost his lunch.

Not sure I fully agree with the ethics of these petrol head programs. I mean they were taking the P out of the americans because people were copying the high speed police chases they enjoy televising so much. But really clarkson and gang are also probably encouraging a load of teenage petrol heads to go off cruising, driving fast and pulling dodgy stunts in their souped up novas. oh well....

Still damn good entertainment all the same....

I have one problem with Top Gear putting all the super-cars on a hot lap around their circuit and then putting the times up on a board.

It sort of defeats the whole point when they send a car (like the Noble) around the track when its wet. :brickwall while the Lambo and Zonda went around when it was dry. With the sort of power these cars have it makes a noticable difference if its wet or dry

Mandrill
01-11-2002, 21:26
When I went to the recording of top gear they said that they would wet the track so it would always be fair.Though it was dry for the Zonda if you look some of the track was wet were they had laid water down.

Having seen the Stig in person the guy is a munchkin so I doubt it's Hill

A few bits of wet track isn't the same as a track with standing water everywhere and rain.

Could the Stig be Johnny Herbert?

They already have a new Skyline but they are not definitely making a GTR.

At last years Tokyo motor show I saw the GTR-35 Concept and it looked amazing.

Nissan could not and would not confirm if they were going to launch the 35.

£40k is a pretty expensive price for an R34 but probably not too far out. Seen them going for £30k upwards (In Japan before the announcement for £15k )

When Nissan announce that they were not going to build any more 34's initially all remiaing cars were snapped up.

A week later they said 1,000 more were available. Guess how long it took to sell them?

2 hours and most people paid in full!

Eh?
Methinks you misunderstand. You do select 1st by using the paddle. Jeremy's problem was that without a clutch its difficult (when on an incline) to take your foot off the brake and onto the acclerator smoothly and quickly so that you don't roll backwards or take off rather too quickly.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just use the handbrake to do a hill start without rolling backwards? Seemed odd to me at the time - I think he was overdoing it to make a point.

Also Coogan did well to beat Ross kemps time as the track was awful for his lap. What an anorak though
God that guy was dull. What a pillock.

And they got Richard Burns in, and basically talked to him for 10 seconds before shoving him outside? And got the other pillock to take the car round the track? Did someone mix up their roles or something?!

Here's the article they talked about - Gay cars http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/ymca.gif :

From http://www.outuk.com/index.html?[url]http://www.outuk.com/content/features/car/index.html :

OutUK's Adrian Gillan reveals our exclusive look at the gayest cars on the road, whether you like to be Smart about town, you're a new Mini kind of guy, or your wheels are a Queer As Folk Jeep. And as revealed on Sunday night's Top Gear on BBC 2, you don't have to be gay to drive these motors...even Jeremy Clarkson's wheels are in the Top 10 at No 4.

Cars might not seem the queerest things, know what I mean mate? A scratch and a sniff. It's more firm pecs than tech specs for most gay guys who'll scarce know a grunt from a purr beneath their bonnet.

Let's face it: some gay men will do almost anything to avoid getting behind a wheel. It's cabs, cabs, cabs with us boys, and sod the expense. We'd sooner take a taxi to the "offie" than walk to the corner. Or for birthdays and treats, we might upgrade to the cool limo or brash Roller of our dreams, with chauffeur in shades. Alternatively, but in equally trenchant vein, some of us turn militant urban warriors bussing it or getting on our bikes.

The best thing about the Smart is probably the price. From £6,265-£9,965 on the road - in a variety of styles from the basic beauty to the sporty and darned cruisy - it's pure urban chic and ever so gay.

That said, many need a bit more hands on - right in the driving seat. You know, foot down eyes front stuff, tearing about town or down to Brighton, but without writhing around in oil letting your spanner loose: car as lifestyle statement, car as basic fashion accessory. From rugged Queer as Folk Jeeps - a bovver boot on wheels, a kind of kitsch urban tank - to summertime open-air cruisers like MG, BMW or Porsche convertibles or classic American retro Chevies with COX 1 plates.

Of course that's the gay theory. In practice most of us just have our anonymous little T-reg Fiestas or Polos. It's a hoot to see uniform guys mincing out of a club all be-leathered and sibilant, rounding the corner to open the door, not of a decommissioned and repossessed armoured carrier, but of an X-reg Seat, and straight back for a nice suburban cuppa.

1. Smart
2. Jeep Wrangler
3. Pink Rolls-Royce
4. Mercedes SL55 AMG
5. New Mini
6. BMW Z8
7. Porsche convertible
8. Classic Chevy
9. New Skoda
10.New Beetle

But the gayest vehicle on the road right now is without doubt the Smart. The ultimate driving accessory - it's so small you just can't miss it! Heads turn as you dart your Smart in and out of traffic, leaving lorries standing and parking in places you've frankly no right.

Perfectly evolved to suit queer needs - gay man and machine in perfect harmony - it's striking and in your face, challenging notions of both masculinity and what a car should be, as it effortlessly out-manoeuvres many a high tonnage of characterless junk out on the road. A right little gay David versus the straight auto Goliaths!

It's a moving sight, a boy in a Smart - such a public display of Fagdom. You don't know whether to laugh or cheer as you shamelessly shop and strum about town, folded up neatly in your little shopping-basket-turned-boy-babe-bucket. So practical, yet so conspicuous!

You can almost hear White Van Man drivers seethe, "Get off the ********* road you little gay ****** - call that a car?" as you cut them up and leave them stranded; all but sense the gay boys cheer, "We'll done mate - just you show 'em!" as you spin about Soho; well nigh bask in gasps of glory filling up your huge bootage with bags of boutique booty, open and shut the auto-roof rain or shine, and thumb your nose at the straight-laced cumbersome, faceless juggernauts that pass for cars as you nip down the gym.

And what a bonus: just two pedals - fast and slow - so it's evens you'll push the right one at the right time. And if you can't handle handles or clock knobs and gears, just switch effortlessly into full autopilot, turn your brain off and - like some surreal dodgem - loose all sense of contact with the road.

General tech specs, in case your father or brother-in-law should ask? Try out some of these: eco-chic two-seater city car from DaimlerChrysler; in a range of styles and specs; options include double-ellipse headlights and steering column 'paddle' gear shift; 7.7 gallon tank for 400 miles plus range; low CO2 emissions and recyclable parts; full "crash management system" and 0-62.5 mph in under 19s, with 85mph tops. A grunt and a sniff - then ask if he'll race you round the block. Mate.

Was OK - although I could have done without the "fastest faith" piece.

On a side note, did anyone else spot 'Driven' was on C4 at 4.35pm for an hour? Only caught the last half, but it seemed better than earlier this year.

Strange time to show it though.

Throught Top Gear was pretty good tonight could still do with more actual road test's though. Some of the cable channel motor programe's are actually better for road testing your every day normal car.

Top Gear was alright last night, though the gaumless crowd in the background are a bit annoying. The best moment was weedy boys comment about the BMW having one knob to do 89 different things - not the driver

Once again they fobbed off Richard Burns though - they showed him doing about 3 corners in the Peugeot and there was no further mention of it or him.

Makes me glad to be going for the Elise.

Clarkson is a crap drive, the guy from Lotus really showed him how to drive the Elise.

Thought that Prodrive Scooby was pretty awesome. They had obviously never driven an AWD before as they were backing off. Should have floored it and GRIP GRIP GRIP.

Clarkson is just a self-righteous knobhead who just loves the sound of his own voice.

I think they've just edited together the film they had already shot when it was axed last month. Only watched the first bit - got the rest on tape somewhere - but it was introduced as an 'Hour-long 4x4 special'. They then went on to list various bits of the regular stuff they used to do, plus presumably a longer section on off-roaders (how exciting  )

The only bit I'm interested in is whether those blokes got that old Maxi down to Spain or wherever. Might fast forward to find that bit, but when they came on at the beginning with those childish graffiti painted clipboards you remembered how cringeworthy it was ....

Update - I've just watched the rest of the Driven tape:

4X4 bit wasn't bad but hardly enough to call it a 4X4 Special  Decided the X5 was best if you wanted to drive on roads, Range Rover best in mud, & Toyota Amazon best to drive across the desert - no surprises there then.

Maxi adventure thing was quite good - it blew its head gasket in France, luckily near 'British Autos', a garage that fixed old Brit cars (bit of a coincidence?). The guys driving it then got it all the way to Morroco OK and then kind of drove into the middle of the desert where they seemed to leave it for kids to play on

The rest was the same juvenile cr@p - eg driving bangers around on pallet things to win a clapped out Capri.

Apparently next week's is a 'Rally Special'. Presumably a rally report with other old recorded bits interlaced through it. Probably the last one ....

I assume that the really old Beetles used to have external lights that stuck out of the side of the car and swivelled.

Another thing the super 'mini'' test I don't think the MG ZR should be in the same class as the Fiesta etc..

The guy said the were the mid range models which is wrong the Fiesta,Jazz,Micra,C3 were mid ranged but the MG was actually the bottom of the range. The MG starts as a 1.4 and go's up to 1.8 the others start at 1.0 and mostly go as high as 1.6.

I have a Fiesta and my mate has a MG and I wouldent put them in the same class

Quarter lights used to be the term for part of the front side windows. You know on some cars where the fron window is split into two parts, one large part behind that rolls down and one small part in front that doesn't? Well that small part is the 'quarter light' and on beetles they swivel open, hence allowing them to cause drag and steer the car.

Saw the car in the metal at a recent NEC sports car show - believe me it just stops you dead in your tracks. People were just standing around it gawping with their jaws on the ground! That guy who does the styling for MG deserves to be right up there with the top designers in the world. (He even managed to do something with the frontend of the Scooby for goodness sake!)

IMO the reason the Golf R32 is so good is that it can perform this well with all its complement of roadcar kit, rather than being a stripped out track special. Porsche manage this trick as well

I would. They where all 1.4s. The MG is basically the same as the Rover 25 and you can get that with a 1.1 to 1.6. Fact is the MG was the same size as the Fiesta. It's about the same price, same size engine. How the hell isnt it in the same class???
