When you consider how baseball has changed over the years the ability to win 15 (or more) games a year for that amount of time is amazing.

There are records in baseball that people say will be hard if not impossible to break. I can see this being one of those such records what with the way baseball has changed and is now more in favour of the batter rather than the pitcher.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Maddux at the end of the season... will he stay with Atlanta at a reduced wage or will he move on.... will he get 15 wins next season...

Nelson Crowe

Gary Sheffield recently passed Henry Aaron's Atlanta record of 128 RBI that had stood since 1966 (the team's first year in Atlanta.) The franchise record is Eddie Mathews' 135 in '53 (first year in Milwaukee, strangely enough...)

Gary's reaction was interesting. He wasn't that pleased, because he talked about how his grandfather had always loved Hank and had taught Gary to look up to him. Gary said he felt bad eclipsing any of Hank's records.

I thought that level of regard for the game's history was really interesting, especially considering the generally bad reputation he has in the press here, largely among people who don't know him and haven't ever really tried to.

According to reports Manager Jerry Manuel will not be retained by the Chicago White Sox.

Nelson Crowe
27-09-2003, 06:35
It's also generally thought tha Larry Bowa's had it in Philly.

Scott Rolen's gone forever and now so is Bowa. They backed the wrong horse :nono:

These kind of taskmaster managers never work out, long term. Never.

GarFra
27-09-2003, 07:33
I am surprised by the Jerry Manuel reports, hardly surprised if Larry Bowa goes though... the last couple of weeks there has been nothing but stories about him and the players not talking etc etc.

Admiral Ned's troops did a number on Houston. If you can't beat the Milwaukee Brewers, at home...you have no business in the playoffs. Sorry, Jimy.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Javier Lopez for setting a new season high for home runs among Catchers.

He hit his 42nd today, breaking Todd Hunley's mark, set in 1996. I love Javy and I'm happy it was him, but I'm simply glad someone else has that record, because as good as Hunley was that season, it was his only great one. It's bothered me ever since that the Catcher's record wasn't held by Roy Campanella, Johnny Bench or Mike Piazza, the truly great offensive Catchers.

(Of course, all things being equal, the mark would be something like 58 and would be held by Josh Gibson ;) )

GarFra
28-09-2003, 07:03
I have a funny feeling that kjn is happy about something......... just can't put my finger on what it is though :p

GarFra
28-09-2003, 07:05
It was indeed nice to see Javier Lopez had broken the record for home runs by a catcher... I must say I didn't realise it was held by Hunley I figured it was held by Piazza or a similar catcher... Hunley I would never have thought of as the record holder.

kjn6371
28-09-2003, 09:47
Glad we got rid of Hundley,it never worked out for him in Chicago and when he went to LA he started bitching about the Cubbies.Shame he wasn't as good as his Dad.

It's manager hunting season!!!

1. Mike Hargrove's contract will not be renewed by the Baltimore Orioles.

2. Jerry Manuel was relieved of his duties as the Chicago White Sox's manager..... why can't they just say they fired him!!

I get the feeling there will be a few more in the days to come.

Mark Grace has announced his retirement from baseball as a player.

I have always liked the guy as he always appeared to be having fun whenever I got to see him in a game... suspect he ever so slightly mad!!!

As you would expect his announcement was interesting to say the least.... you can read about it here (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/diamondbacks/2003-09-26-grace-retires_x.htm)

GarFra

It nice to see that the Cincinnati Reds and Barry Larkin have reached a deal to keep Larkin in Cincinnati for one final year before he retires.

The deal is for $700,000 plus a possible extra $300,000 in performance bonuses.

It seems to be rare that a player nowadays stays with the one team his whole career.

You can read the story here (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1625723)

These five game things always worry me. A fluky bounce and a hot pitcher and you've got an upset. TV rules my country, though, so I have to suck it up. If there are going to be three rounds, they should all be best of 7.

All we have to do is get into that pen... (You can say the same thing, by the way...)

Sports Illustrated's view (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2003/baseball/mlb/specials/postseason/2003/09/28/braves.cubs.preview/index.html)

I was a bit surprised that Grover got the axe in Baltimore. Losing records tend to happen with lousy players.

I think that Chicago job is probably his. After years of Sgt. Manuel, they need a calming influence.

CUBS WIN 4-2.

Nelson Crowe

I think we all know that the key play of the game was Fick muffing that double play grounder. Indifferent and sloppy defense, especially on the right side of the infield, hurt them repeatedly this year. (It almost bit them in the early going.) Over the long haul, it doesn't show. Now, it's telling.

And just for fun, the game was done on FOX by a guy who still sounds like what he used to be: a Cubs homer and a clueless oaf of a color man who hung a racist slur on Gary Sheffield on national TV last year w/o any consequences. Big fun.

Tune in tomorrow to see if the Braves can muster any heart. I'm sure Cox will think of something

(If Prior wins the Cy Young, it's going to be an utter travesty. You can't have that many fewer wins than the league leader and win that award. It would be a joke.)

I see that the Baltimore Orioles has asked for and been granted permission by the Indians to interview Eddie Murray for Oriloes managers job.

 He has been a great hitting coach for the Indians and if he gets the job with the Orioles I think he'll be a good manager for them.

GarFra

Talking about Gracey.

Mark Grace
One time, Greg Maddux was pitching for the Cubs, and all of a sudden I see him grimacing and limping around. I thought he popped a groin or something. I came to the mound and I asked what was the matter.

Mad Dog was shall we say excited down below.

Mark Grace
I looked at him and I said, 'You know, dude, you really do love pitching, don't you?

.

I root for almost any former Brave, unless there are other considerations (I need his team to lose to enhance the Braves prospects, his team is actually playing the Braves at the time...)

Just today, I saw: Marquis Grissom, Andres Gallaraga, Randall Simon, Kenny Lofton, Jermaine Dye, Alan Embree and John Burkett, almost all of whom I usually root for to succeed.

To answer kjn's question: Last year on a Fox Saturday telecast, they had Sheffield miked up. He sat down, said something to Chipper about a pitch, and Lyons commented something about needing an Ebonics speaker to translate what he said. I was truly shocked but I must have been the only person to hear it, or care.

Oh, and Steve's a former Brave. I don't care for him too much.

SF-Fla.:
Sidney Ponson is a bum. I'm sorry, but there is no other conclusion. I watch @ 100 Orioles games a year and I've watched this guy for years. He has a ton of potential, but I'm convinced he'll never turn the corner. If he does, it'll come too late for him to have a truly great career. He reminds me of the Curt Schilling I used to see pitch for Baltimore and Houston, before he went to Philly. Great arm but no idea how to utilize it or apparent interest in learning. He has, to quote Crash Davis, "A million dollar arm and a five cent head."

Atlanta-Chicago: What a great performance by Mike Hampton. The man is a bulldog. He looked DOA for a bit there and rallied brilliantly. Also, a wonderful job off the bench from Marcus Giles, who could barely run. I'm glad it was Derosa who came through, becausse he was hosed on the bases-loaded strikeout. That pitch was wide. And on that topic...Hunter Wendelstadt is also a bum. He was abominable behind the plate. No team got any advantage from it, because he was missing pitches right and left. Grossly inconsistent. He's only in the majors because his Father and Grandfather were NL umps, and his Dad still owns one of the training camps that MLB umpires are trained at. He is an incompetent, which is unfortunate for all concerned.

Boston-Oakland: If you haven't seen this one, DO SO. At all costs. An absolute and utter classic. Best game in the Playoffs (at any of the three levels) since the Braves-Astros staged that classic 12-inning Game 3 at the Astrodome in 1999. Pedro Martinez and Tim Hudson are two Warriors (and I rarely use that term in a sports context, but it fits them.)

GarFra

Giants v Marlins (NASN) - It is great to see the Marlins.... they hussle and for me they play like as if every at bat their lives depended on it. I hope that the Marlins finally get a decent fan base out of this.

Braves v Cubs (FIVE) - Hampton  I know he is yet to get back to what he was, but I would rather have Hampton at what he is now than a lot of pitchers are at their best. I really enjoyed this game and am really looking forward to game three.

..... and so my plan was to go to bed... but first catch a few innings of the Boston, Oakland game, so much for me getting some sleep. :)

Boston v Oakland (NASN) was amazing, the game of the night for me. It had everything and extra inning as well!!! .... the game went on so long the next thing I realised the wife and kids were awake!!

I now owe my 3-year old daughter one new toy as she 'allowed' me to watch the end of the game instead of cbeebies!! :p

The only thing that could have made tonight's game better was a good set of announcers. Josh Lewin was there, doing the field reporting, and he would have been so much better in the booth.

He's smart, enthusiastic (I watched a lot of his Rangers broadcasts this year and his spirit never wavered) and he doesn't feel the need to get up on a soapbox in the midst of a game-defining inning and hold forth on his Views Of The Game, unlike Brenneman (a habit he learned from his pompadoured blowhard of a Father, who has been mining the same vein doing Reds games since Eppa Rixey played for the team...)

Enough of that...

What a great ending to a great series. One thing I truly love about the current setup in the playoffs: this very opportunity to see the Yankees and Sox fight it out for the AL pennant, and not just the Eastern Division. This will be fun.

Just seen the report and box score of Gmae 1 of Marlins v Cubs. Looks like another entertaining game

Marline win 9-8 in 11 innings. The clubs combined for 7 homers including Sammy Sosa hitting a two-out two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into exta innings

I must admit to really enjoying the games I saw while in Vegas last week especially the Cubs As games that ended with the squeeze play. We were in a bar when that started but my GF was so knackered we went to bed but I watched the whol thing while in bed. Cracking entertainment

I'm hoping for a Cubs/Sox World Series. How great would it be to have 7 games in those ballparks. Plus all the history of them not winning a Series since 1918 etc.

USATODAY is reporting that the LA Dodgers have 'finally' gotten a new owner after News Corp have reached an agreement with Frank McCourt to purchase the club.

However the Major league team owners must approve the sale before it can be finalized.

He is meant to be paying $400+ million for the club seems a bit pricey for a club that haven't made the playoffs since 1996 especially when you consider that the Anaheim Angels were sold last year for $184 million.

The tickets to see any potential world series game at Fenway went on sale yesterday, we had 12 computers and 3 phones going in the office to get tickets from the earliest possoble momnet, and failed to get any for any game. They sold out in about 10 minutes!

Hey, kj...let me ask you a question (and anybody who likes a team who's been in this situation can chime in if you so desire): How do you feel about the big contribution the three late season acquisitions have made to this run the Cubs are on ? Do you feel like they're late comers or do you feel they're full fledged members, even though they weren't there all year? I think I know the answer, (and it would have been, and has been, mine, also), but I'll ask anyway.

That's how I feel, too. Luis Polonia and (especially) Mike Devereaux (who was NLCS MVP) made huge contributions in '95. (And I had loved Devo when he was w/ Baltimore, so that was just a little icing on that cake.)

I have enjoyed seeing Randall Simon thrive. Cox never would plug him in and just let him play. Like Wes Helms, he's blossomed once he got a chance to play every day. (Randall is close friends w/ Andruw, they're both from Curacao.)

This is the frst time since the format was switched to best of seven, rather than the previous best of five, that both leagues have had their series go the full allotment in the same year. It's the first NL series to go seven since the Braves-Cardinals classic in 1996.

I would like to agree, but the Braves won in just that fashion in 1993 (pre-Wild Card, no margin for error), winning 104 games while San Francisco won 103 and had to stay home.

Of course you all know that Atlanta was then beaten by (IMHO) a markedly inferior team, the Philadelphia Phillies (one of the single most disgusting baseball teams in the history of the game that year  )

I've always felt the pressure and effort of overcoming a 10+ games second-half deficit to beat the Giants wore them down and left them vulnerable. The two best teams in baseball that year were SF and Atlanta, Toronto be damned.

(Unlike 1992, when things fell like they should have. For once...)

Well..."right" isn't a word that I would use, but the stronger team won. If the Braves had been able to finish off that win in game two and headed north w/ a 2-0 lead, they might have been able to pull an upset, but when Reardon (who's very much persona non grata among Braves fans for this) put on Derek Bell and gave up that gopher ball to Sprague, all real hope probably disappeared.

'93 w/ McGriff and Maddux added to the lineup and Avery back on form...would've been a diffferent story.

That year and '96 stick in my craw. All else I can deal with.

There was once a merit system in place, with the Umpires secretly grading their own, but that was eventually scrapped in favor of an "Everybody gets a turn" policy with predictably disastrous results. Now, with the Umpires in a rather less commanding position in their collecctive bargaining, I'm actually not sure.

I've seen Gary Darling and Angel Hernandez (who had to be overruled by Tim McClelland on that foul pole home run of Walker's in Game 1 of the ALCS, if you remember...) active so far this postseason, so I know it's not strict merit, because those two are widely considered bums by all concerned.

The Braves were in the same position the Marlins are in at this stage in 1991. I hope it comes out better for them. (An object lesson in how much I despise the Yankees...I'm rooting for Florida :(...)

When it comes to umpires that are to umpire the World Series then they should go for the best regardless.... not everyone gets a turn.

The World Series is meant to be the best 2 teams in the world (okay the USA), so surely the people that are to make the decisions on the bases should also be the best.

And as for Angel Hernandez :cuckoo: is the best way to describe the man and some of the decisions he has made this year.

Bobby Valentine is reportedly close to signing a deal to manage the Chiba Lotte Marines, the Japanese Pacific League team he led in 1995.I know he's not to everyone's taste but I've enjoyed him on Baseball Tonight.

I have to agree with you regarding Bobby on Baseball Tonight, he has been highly enjoyable to watch on there.

If he does go and manage I'll miss him, not something I ever thought I would say.

I guess Grady is suffering from not making it to the World Series. :|

I actually thought he was a good manager for the Red Sox's, wonder who they'll go after for the job?

I have tried to get into the Ice Hockey, but while I'll watch it when its on I won't go out of my way to watch it, I also don't have any particular team that I support which I guess doesn't help :)

Can't wait for the new season of baseball to start, but I get the feeling there will be plenty to talk about with new managers etc etc.... Grady Little being the first of a few moves that are bound to happen.

This is why the Red Sox will never win. Childish impatience and an incessant need to please their ignorant, complaining, mewling fans. :cuckoo:

This is it for me. I've followed the Sox on a casual and occasionally more, basis since @ 1984 (and I really liked some of the late 70's teams, also), but it's over.

This is the kind of decision, both for it's absurdity and it's effect on my support, that Frank Williams made when he canned Damon Hill, just as Damon was handing him the F1 trophy. I was so infuriated by that that I began (while holding my nose) to enjoy seeing Schumacher win, just to see steam come out of FW's nose.

Ridiculous, indefensible and just plain dumb. What a bunch of buffoons. :blah:

And John Henry is a wimpy twit.

There's a Yankee fan,Red Sox fan,Marlins fan and a Cubbies fan who are climbing to the top of a mountain.During the climb they talk about how loyal they are and how they would do anything for their teams.

At the summit the Marlins fan jumps off the mountain shouting "This is for the Marlins"

The Cubs fan follows him and he shouts "This is for the Cubbies".

Finally the Red Sox fan shouts "This is for everyone" and pushes the Yankee fan off.

Actually, I think the Marlins fan would take a helicopter up to the summit.

Nelson I keep hearing a rumour that 'Mad Dog's' going to San Diego, have you heard anything?.If he does leave the Braves be nice to see him back at Wrigley.

It's generally considered that he's going to leave Atlanta, but where he's going to go is apparently up in the air. There were a lot of rumors a year ago that Jerry Colangelo was keen to add him to the D-Backs rotation and have three big name starters, but I haven't heard that lately. I think he still has a home in Las Vegas, so he'll likely go west, somewhere.

I hate to see him get #300 somewhere else, and I hope he wears a Braves cap on his HOF plaque, but it's time for him to move along.

Shouldn't we let this thread die and start a new one next year? :p

Maybe we can start an off season thread, covering all the player movement and news items. Call it the Hot Stove Thread and let it expire on March 31st next year, when we start the new season.

Ozzie Guillen was hired to manage the White Sox today. He's a wonderful guy and I hope he's wildly successful

Look for Wagner to get up in Bowa's face next year if Larry questions his desire. Billy's from right down the road from me and he's a tough, tough little fellow.
