I've got a Philips 32PW6324 widescreen telly about 18 months old (warranty expired).
For the last few weeks the picture keeps going green after turning on, sometimes it gets greener and greener until it flickers back to normal, sometimes just remains an annoying greenish tint until switched off and on again.
According to a local repairer it's a fault with the tube (£660 repair!).
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with any Philips models?
Any strong magnetic sources (speakers, fans, etc) next to it? - these can create such an effect if they are too close to the tv.
Only a possibility

660 quids for repair, you might well buy new TV instead
but try to unplug everything and remove all speakers nearby and see if the problem are solved. It might work or not.

Q. I bought a fridge/freezer about 18 months ago, and the freezer section has completely failed. I went back to the shop, and they refused to do anything as it was outside the original 12 month guarantee. What are my rights?
A. Firstly, when you buy goods from a shop, you enter into a contract under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended), which holds the shop liable for up to 6 years after purchase, providing that you can show that the problem is down to an unreasonable fault and not normal wear and tear. Secondly, remember that the guarantee is only ever going to be in addition to your legal rights, and is offered by the manufacturer of the goods as a goodwill gesture. Don't be taken in by the shop's argument here - they are using the issue of the guarantee as a red herring to try to avoid their legal obligations toward you. See our leaflet 'Buying Goods' for more information on your rights.
May be worth having a word with trading standards as I'm pretty sure the above doesn't just apply to freezers.

Thanks for the replies folks.
I'm pretty sure the TV hasn't been near any magnetic sources since I've had it. It's been inspected by an authorised Philips service agent who says its the tube that's shot so I'm assuming he's probably right, though I think I'll get another check.
I've written a shirty letter to Philips to see what they have to say.
The trading standards line looks like it might be worth a try before I fork out for another TV (definitely not Philips!).

Couple of points.
Back in the mid-eighties when I used to work for a well known electrical retailer (I'm cured now though) - Philips used to give a free tube guarantee with their sets. Not sure if it was 3 or 5 yrs but it covered the cost of the parts, not labour. Might be just worth checking your documentation - I know my info is old though.
2nd thing. I used to have similar problems with a Sony Trinitron that a fried described as "sync on green" error. Only applied to an RGB connection via SCART though. Sorted my problem out by giving the plugs a bit of a wiggle. Does the problem occur on all inputs?

I bought a Philips 24" W/S set nearly four years ago, and that had an insurance offer of 6 years tube guarantee for £20 - so I took it.
Could be useful as the set has developed a fault which I'm pretty sure is the tube. When watching in any other screen setting than 4:3 I get a dark patch in the middle of the screen which is 4:3 screen size - I'm pretty sure that it's the 4:3 image burn't onto the tube.

Great News!
Just got back from hols (on Isle of Wight actually Pompeyfan - nice place) to find a letter from Philips Customer Services saying as a gesture of good will they will provide new tube and I pay labour charge. Hopefully this won't be too extortionate.
Always pays to complain!

How much does it cost for labour charge ?
I reckon my TV got a small fault and wondering if it worth getting repaired.

Philips make a standing charge of £55 which I think is pretty good. Mine went off to a workshop for nearly 2 months but they did provide a reasonable loan one while it was gone. Got it back a couple of weeks ago and everything seems fine.
