Played about with one of these in a retailers last night. Really excellent GUI shows thumbnail of each recording made along with time and channel it was recorded from.

Got salesman to put the disc in a Sony 300 and it played fine (DVD+RW).

Very tempted it must be said. Would want the 890 though for the firewire input.

I got the 890 yesterday. Seems very nice although so far I've tried two DVD players and three DVD-ROM drives and the recorded disc only worked in one of the DVD-ROM drives (which is why I went for a hardware recorder over a PC DVD+RW drive in the first place).

The HQ, SP and SP+ recording modes look very respectable. I recorded a few videos off of MTV in SP+ and they looked a lot better than VHS.

I got my machine from Hiway Hi-fi (not sure of the url) for £520 delivered - not the cheapest but they were in stock. Now I just need to get hold of a remote to hack the region...

Have you got a digital camcorder to try out the firewire?

Please report back if the hack works. I assume its the OneFor6 hack that other Phillips DVD players use.

I have a Sony D8 camcorder. I hooked it up last night (you need a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable). The picture quality was very good. The light isn't particularly good in my living room and the camera has quite a grainy image. Because of the grainy picture SP mode looked slightly blocky, however HQ looked very good.

Your best bet would be to get a demonstration though...

Yes the standard remote hack for philips works fine. No RCE though

Really interested in any views on the Philips 880/890 as seriously considering getting one to replace the Wharfy and a 20 year old VHS recorder. In particular, how does does straight DVD playback compare with other dedicated players - is there a significant quality compromise to get recordability?

Is firewire the only difference between the two? - the 890 is of no interest to me therwise cos not interested in camcorder.

Grateful for all views/reviews. Have looked up various articles via Google but would rather hear from those who actually have a machine and are using it.

the 890 has a 6hr recording mode as opposed to a 4hr max on the 880.

I've had the 880 for just over a week now and I'm very impressed with it. DVD playback is very good, at least on a par with my Tosh 220E

Only have to wait for the disk prices to start tumbling and I'll be happy

You can find details of the hack at www.dvdplusrw.org (http://www.dvdplusrw.org) (info is linked off of the site).

You need a OneForAll 6 remote (available from Argos or Index) to perform the hack. Remote should cost £20-£30 although whether you'll want to use it afterwards I wouldn't like to say... ;)

Be aware that on the 880 and 890 the hack doesn't let you play RCE discs. Having said that, out of over 600 discs, I only have one which is RCE.

if you use the recorder to copy another dvd does it copy the sound like the original or convert it into prologic/stereo:confused:

AFAIK the whole range of stand-alone recorders are only able to record in stereo, and not 5.1 or DTS...

To get these kind of soundtracks you would need to rip and burn the data files from a DVD using a PC style recorder.
