Does anyone have any info on this classic Argento film being released? Last I heard, Paramount had it down for early 2003...

Here's hoping! I saw it at the NFT many years ago, and can't wait for it to appear on shiny disc.

u heard right!
there's something about this on the US Home Theater Forum. Apparantly it's one of Paramount's most requested titles! I want it to complete my Argento collection!

try www.horrorview.com they might have more info.

I too saw it at the NFT - 1996 when they did the Argento retrospective - and loved it. Much better, imo, than "The Cat O'Nine Tails".

Do Paramount even have a decent print to source a DVD from ? The NFT print was in poor condition if I remember correctly and the only copy I have got is a p&s VHS from Europe.

Is this the one with Bud Spencer in it? Would be great because then I could complete my Argento collection and at the same time start a Bud Spencer/Terence Hill collection.

They seem to have a thing for Hill/Girotti (and to a lesser extent, Spencer/Pedersoli) in Denmark. Get your collection off to a flying start here (http://www.dvdoo.com/dvdoo/actor.asp?Command=3929). :)

(Crying out for "Four Flies" myself. If I'm not mistaken, Paramount are also sitting on another Italian must-have (IMO), Bava's "Danger: Diabolik".)

Is that an actual bootleg or do you mean the German big box release that originally claimed to be official?

Best bootleg I've ever bought.

Reviews are so inaccurate these days its hard to tell if the quality of the new release would be better.

I'd certainly forsake 41 unimportant seconds if the print was of genuine legal quality

I'd only ever seen the French VHS before (now probably worhtless), so I'd never heard the English dub. Are the voices really supposed to be that low? Loved the Italian trailer on there.

The Mya transfer is great apparently! Which is why I'll be upgrading. However, with the missing footage, it may be worth hanging onto your German copy as well.

From reviews, the picture quality of the new release is near pristine but the audio is a little shaky. The missing footage is apparently only from a couple of minor dialogue scenes and does not affect the film.

Worth noting that like the German disc, MYA's release does not seem to be authorised by Paramount (the US rights holders).

Really ? I thought Paramount sub licensed it to Mya otherwise how can it be an official release if Paramount hold the rights to FFoGV ?

According to the back the disc is licened from Seda Spettacoli, I'm sure they wouldn't have licened it if Paramount still had the US rights? Iknow there was a long going rights dispute so I assume it's been settled and Paramount no longer have US rights?

There is an impending Italian DVD release in May, although no word on English options.

The concerns re: authorised release status, come from the fact that MYA have announced plans to release Aristide Massaccesi's gory horror flick Horrible (also known as Rosso sangue / The Monster Hunter / Absurd) in June, a title owned by MGM in the US, who have refused to sub-licence it in the past to a number of other DVD firms.

Obviously I hope to be proven wrong, but it would be worth picking up their releases ASAP in case some of them are going to be pulled.

agent999
17-03-2009, 12:46
Great news about Absurd, I have the old German (almost certainly not legit) DVD, it's one of my favourite Italian Horrors and it looks like sort of S-VHS quality (better than Laser Paradise's usual video mastered output, but not quite DVD quality), so if MYA can get it looking half as good as Four Flies than it will be worth getting. At the end of the day I'd like to see the right people making money from these releases, but it's more important to me that these films are made available for those of us that want to see them.

Rather curiously MYA have decided to list all their upcoming releases for the next few years, subject to change of course.
Worth noting that it has been confirmed on other forums that more than a few of these films are owned by majors or by rights holders who have not been willing to licence out in the past.

The whole thing just gets dodgier and dodgier. Apparently the Argentos have put out an injunction to stop an Italian release of Four Flies claiming that they own the non US rights (and that Paramount still own the US rights). Sounds like that Whole Zombie 2 situation a few years back where Media Blasters and Blue Underground both released it. I have to say, sounds to me like Argento is being opportunistic: if the brothers do own the rights then why haven't they allowed it to be released before? Looks like the rights are still tangled and they're just one of the parties that possibly owns it. It does make a rubbish of the mya's claim that their version is licenced from Seda Spettacoli though as this is the Argento's company (unless the company has changed hands?).

Anyway, it may be worth grabbing a copy now before Paramount try and stop the US version.

If it can be referred to as bootleg it will only be because the company they obtained the licence from was not authorised to issue it.

SO if the reports are true it is an "unofficial" or "unauthorised" release- but the quality is genuine

By all accounts (and from the picture quality) they were given access to the original negative ( as stated on the case) so I dont give a toss if its bootleg or not.

It renders the German bootleg obsolete and that WAS a bootleg - taken from various sources - all crap compared to the Mya disc

A bootleg is an illegal copy that is deliberately produced by the vendor and the word bootleg gives the impression of substandard quality that rips off the consumer.

By all accounts Mya bought the rights and released it in good faith.

So by the time you get off your high horse and miss the release you will regret it also as its unlikely to have a release of better quality.

When its withdrawn and ends up on ebay for a 3 figure sum you might wish you got it and forgot your curious moral stance

A bootleg or pirated dvd is a dvd deliberately produced illegally .

The Mya disc was produced in all good faith from someone who ( it may be) was not authorised to sell the rights.

Thats a long way from me running off a copy and flogging it on ebay or someone offering "Asian Imports".

Over the years various dvd's have been inadvertently released by mistake like the original UK dvd of Poltergeist from Warner - who it turns out never had the rights . The rights belonged to MGM and that was why it was withdrawn very quickly and why many listings show it as never released until the recent one which even claimed it was the first UK release of the movie
Do you refer to that dvd as a bootleg too?:cuckoo:

So Warner's Poltergeist dvd is a bootleg according to you then?:cuckoo:

I doubt any organisation would be interested in the Mya disc as it was released (allegedly) under false pretences.

If it proves to be illegal a simple withdrawal will be the end of it - for Mya anyway.

The company that sold them the licence would be a different matter.

You also missed out a key word in your description and that was "knowingly".

If a work is released by a company who fully believe they are legally able to it can hardly be called bootlegging and nobody except you - and certainly not any legal body - would refer to it as such

Of course it is still available and it will be until the legal action has been sorted out.

"lawyers working for the Argento family have begun proceedings to stop both releases. Why? Because Dario and Claudio Argento, who own all territory rights except for America (where it's owned by Paramount) were only informed of this release by chance. An unknown foreign company sold the rights to Four Flies on Grey Velvet to RAI, but Dario and Claudio claim they never sold the rights to this unknown foreign company, so, according to them, they regard it is a gross act of audio/visual piracy.

Injunctions have already been issued to prevent the release of Four Flies on Grey Velvet in Italy. In the meantime, RAI has announced they have temporarily suspended distribution of Four Flies on Grey Velvet, at least until the rights issue has been cleared up.

I've queried Mya about this troubling information and was told that they are confident that this will not affect the U.S. release, as the Argentos do not own the U.S. release rights."

These issues will not be resolved at this point, and it may take legal action to settle who owns what, if any legal action will be forthcoming."

I usually order via Marketplace Sellers on the UK version because even though they are in the US the postage charge remains at £1.21.

Unless there is a big gap in price I find it simpler than ordering via the US companies direct

It also means I can use debit card and not credit card.

What an odd little film - I much prefer both Crystal Plumage and Cat O' Nine Tails - this one, despite interesting moments, just didn't hang together for me. The sound is really quite dreadful - it is pitched to low (anyone who's ever seen Michael Brandon and/or Mimsy Farmer in anything will hear it instantly), it's really muffled, and very hard to understand most of the dialogue. I didn't listen to the Eyetalian track - maybe that's better, but since there are no subtitles on the Eyetalian track, well, why bother?

Fans have already pitch-corrected the audio.

If you have an Oppo DVD player, you can pitch correct the audio yourself, move up three places on the pitch scale apparently (not tested this myself).
